Chapter 1

I don’t know what the hell my mother was thinking. Who the hell decided to move their kid away from everything they’ve ever known just before the start of their senior year of high school. Not only move them, no my mother took it further than that. She moved us 2,000 miles away from our hometown of Cincinnati, Ohio to Las Vegas, Nevada. I swear she is out to make my life a living hell. She’s pissed that I am not her idea of a perfect daughter. I'm not a straight 'A' student and I refuse to be a cheerleader. My mother and I generally don’t get along. I was always closer to my father than I was to her. I have a lot of grudges against her for reasons that I keep personal. She doesn’t like that fact that music and dancing are my two passions in life. I was a member of one of the top dance groups in the state of Ohio alongside my best friend since diapers, Monica. We performed all over the state and country even. That was all ripped away from me by my mother who never even bothered to show up to a single performance of mine. She made me leave behind all my friends and the things that I loved the most just so she could move across the country and in with the asshole she has been “dating”. I can’t stand the man and his daughter is even worse. She is your typical whiney, stuck up cheerleader who only has straight A’s because she screws the male teachers.

“We are here” My mother said as we pulled up to a house.
“Yay” I said with sarcasm completely evident in my voice
“Would you at least try to be civil about it? I know you don’t like it but this is our new live, suck it up and deal with it.” She said as she got out of the car and walked towards the house
“Whatever” I mumbled as I grabbed my bag and followed her. She had all of our stuff sent here a week earlier.
“Welcome to your new home Kathryn” Bill said once I wanted in the door
“For the thousandth time its Katie” I said. I hated being called Kathryn. My dad was the only one who could get away with calling me by my full name.
“Right. Jessica why don’t you show Katie to her room so she can unpack” bill said
“But daddy Bradley will be here any second. We have that pool party before school starts tomorrow for the cheerleading and football team.” Jessica whined.
“I’m sure I can find it on my own” I said
“Last door on the left” Jessica said with a smirk. I just rolled my eyes at her and headed up the steps. My room wasn’t hard to find. It was the only one painted light blue and chocolate brown. At least my mother got the colors right. It only took me a couple hours to unpack all of my things and put them where I wanted. Once I finished, I wasn’t in the mood to sit around the house so I decided to roam around town. I grabbed my ipod before running down the steps
“Going for a walk” I yelled before walking out the door. I put my ipod on full blast and just walked. I didn’t have the slightest clue as to where I was going. I ended up at a park. There wasn’t anyone around so I started to practice some of my dance routines. After a while it started to get dark. Not only that but I realized I was lost and had not the slightest idea how to get back to the house. I started in the direction I thought I came from. I was getting ready to cross the street when I heard a car horn. Then I felt a pair of arms wrap around me and pull be backwards
“Fucking Asshole!” I yelled as I flipped the car off
“I take it you aren't from around here” a male voice said. I turned around to see a tall guy who was a skinny as a pole. Seriously he could turn sideways and disappear. He had honey eyes and longish brown hair
“You guessed right” I said
“I’m Ryan” he said
“Katie…. Do you thing you could help me. I'm kind of lost” I said
“Looking for your hotel?” he asked
“No... I just moved here on some sort of flower lane” I said
“Lilly Lane?” Ryan asked with a laugh
“That’s it!” I said a bit too excitedly
“You’re lucky. I live on Lilly Lane. I think you’re my new neighbor.” He said as we started to walk
“Awesome. At least I have one normal person around then”
“I don’t know about normal but compared to Jessica yeah”
“So you know her?”
“Not really. More like know her reputation. So tell me about yourself”
“Well… I'm 17. I am a senior... or will be tomorrow. Moved here from Cincinnati, Ohio. Had to leave my friends and dance team behind. I don’t really get along with my mom. It’s even worse with bill and Jessica. Music and dancing are my life. So yeah that’s me in a nutshell” I said
“Wow. Well I'm 18. Just graduated. Music is also my life. I am in a band with 3 of my friends. I love writing. I usually don’t tell people this but since you live next door, my dad is a drunk. So if you head yelling or things being thrown just ignore it please” Ryan said
“At least you have a dad” I said
“Yeah I have a dad but no mom. She left when I was 10. What happened to your dad?”
“He killed himself. He walked in on my mom cheated on him with Bill, not once but twice. So he killed himself because he couldn’t take it”
“Wow. That blows”
“Yeah I know. So less depressing topic. What the hell is there to do in this town?” I asked trying to change the subject. I usually didn’t open up to anyone about my dad much less someone I just met.
“Nothing really. Usually my friends and I hang out and watch movies or write songs together. What school are you going to?”
“Palo something”
“Palo Verde…two of my friends go there. I’ll have to introduce you to them. Well here we are.” Ryan said as we reached my house.”
“Thanks for helping me get home. I would have been dead otherwise” I said
“No problem. If you ever need anything or someone to talk to just let me know. You’re welcome to hang out with me and my friends whenever you want. I’m sure they would love you”
“I think I’ll take you up on that offer. Here let me give you my cell number” I said as I took a pen out of my hair. I wrote my number on his arm before he did that same to me.
“It was nice meeting you Ryan” I said as I hugged him. I could sense from how he tensed up that he didn’t get affection all that much.
“You too Katie. Good night” he said as he walked toward his house. I went into mine and went straight to my room. I could hear screaming coming from next door and I tried my hardest like Ryan said to ignore it. I saw a light switch on in the room across from mine. I saw Ryan walk in and slam the door. I tore my eyes away before changing my clothes and climbing into bed. I was really dreading the start of school tomorrow. But at least I’ve made one friend so far. I have a feeling Ryan and I were going to get really close. Not in a romantic way, more like a brother-sister way. At least someone made these living arrangements a bit more bearable for me.
