Very Interesting! I take it we've encountered one of Cho's descendents?
redAuthor's response
Nope Not Cho's. There is a clue in the chapter, but it's pretty obscure and it does take some serious thinking to get it.The Wizard on the Edge of Forever

My, my, is Hui going to be a witch, and Harry is "The-Boy-Who- Disappeared"?
That could be a really interesting turn of events, especially if Mickey is a wizard from the Chinese tradition of magic. The Wizard on the Edge of Forever

With the hints a few chapters back this kinda jives in well. Who said all of the Wizards had gone? Harry went east not west when he was looking for magicals on earth.
A great build up and now you are making me anxious for the next installment.
BTW Loved the Archer and T'Pol name drops during the cadet's introduction meet.
I'm a fan of the Archer/T'Pol ship yah a small lot of followers and reading their names makes me want to reread some trek stories.
Though I hated the prequel idea as a series the cast on Enterprise was as good as any of the previous trek series.
Just wished they had not gone off the deep end in their 3rd season!
T'Pol and Trip reminds me too much of an adult Ron & Hermione which I'm not a keen fan of.
Glad your giving us a Harry centered story w/o the Hogwarts girls reappearing.
Though I would have loved to see Luna's reaction to this era... and them to her!
I mean alot of her imaginary creatures all seem to be there out in the trek universe although with different names right!

Author's response
I'm glad that you like what I have been doing to the two universes. Archer and T'Pol were two last minute additions to the list of names, but I think that they fit in well with the company.
Lets face it, Archer took an untried ship with a warp drive that damn near blew up in testing because they hadn't tuned it right. T'Pol left Vulcan to ride herd on a bunch of smelly barbarians that were just as likely start a few interstellar wars for something to do as they were to find cool stuff to play with.
I'll be the first one to admit it, but Yes this is a Harry centric story, but the Hogwarts girls will show up later on as something a bit more than a fleeting memory or allusion, without actually getting shot into the future. The Wizard on the Edge of Forever

So, when do the Polywogs become Shellbacks?
"Heihachiro Nogura" - Horatio Nelson? The name just came that way to me.
One thing I noticed, you sometimes will end a phrase or sentence with a proposition. If you look, you'll know where it's at. ;-)
I'm still trying to figure out whether or not Hui Johansson is magical or not; at this point I'm thinking not she may have had an ancestor or two that were. Her reaction after Harry told everyone his birthday (plus the fact Harry wasn't injured after the fall) at the end of the chapter leads me to think that she's read some journals, diaries, or hear tales of "the Boy Who Lived".
I'll take a stab at who Hui's ancestors are...
The only two people in Hogwarts that I believe to have mentioned Scandinavia would be Luna (Snorkack hunting) and Daphne Greengrass (her mother, if I remember correctly according to a JKR interview.)
From the oriental side, it could be Cho (you've eliminated her) or Su Li. I'm sure I'm missing someone though.
It's been a few hundred years so...
Based on personality though, I'm going with Luna. ;-)
Oh, and I laughed at the fried jalapeño scene. I love'em and I've pulled the same stunt off folks from the midwest myself.
Author's response
Hehehe. Picked that one up did you. My dad went to the naval academy and both my grandfathers were navy. God knows I've heard about crossing the line.
Nogura is actually cannon from Star Trek. He's mentioned in the First Movie when McCoy is bitching about being "Drafted"
That fried jalapeño bit was actually pulled on me at that restaurant when I was coming back from Korea in 1990.
The El Toreador is a very real Mexican place near one of the cable car barns in San Francisco. I ate there the first week they were open and that food is good.
As for the ancestor...Shhhh! :)The Wizard on the Edge of Forever

Nice fun cliffie at the end, there. I thought you did a good job on "Beast Barracks" and the first year at Starfleet Academy. I'm just going with the flow on speculating who Hui is descended from; I'll be more interested in just what other information they may have for Harry. -Grin- If you have need of an Engineering-track cadet, feel free to insert one John Evans (not my name, if anyone's wondering; though I am an engineer and Scotty was always my favorite ST:TOS character).Author's response
I'm glad that you like it. I hope that your going to be surprised with how I'm going to be doing things in the next couple of chapters, I've talked with a few people about what I have planned and they all agree that its plausible, if not a very good possibility.
John Evans...Nope can't use him as a cadet, but as an Engineering officer oh yeah. How's Commander Evans sound to you?The Wizard on the Edge of Forever

I like the cliff-hanger! Not really sure who Hui is a decendant of (400 years is a lot of time for blood-lines to cross), but i would bet that luna's family would be the most likely to keep various eccentric stories around, if for no other reason than pure entertainment. Based on her reaction to harry's fall, i'd say that she's either magical or was raised where magic is used. If i had to guess, i'd say that after the fall she did some research and braught harry to the Jade Dragon as a kind of subtle test. Once again, i really like this story and look forward to any update.Author's response
Your dead on with the test at the Jade Dragon. The bar is charmed like the Leaky Cauldron. Only a witch, wizard or squib is going to notice the place. The Wizard on the Edge of Forever

Awesome, though you managed to drag me in with that cliffie there, and can't wait to see what the thing is with Hui, as well as how things go with Harry in the rest of his training, though he looks to be heading for security, with being able to take a good fall and aswesome aiming skills. I do guess that as this is coming in a few years after he arrived, that by the time he gets to the fleet he's going to be wearing those oh so bland gray uniforms from the first film huh? Bleh. Or maybe the security uniforms from the early movies, with a helmet and body armor?
Author's response
Yep it will be the bland greay ones initially. Harry will be Operations cross trained as security. Kinda like Checkov is.The Wizard on the Edge of Forever

I'll take a wild guess and say that Harry had found magic users ;-p
But that was one hell of a cliffy!
Please, update soon!

Commander Evans? That works for me. In RL, but for some peculiar dice rolls by fate (i.e. low-order probabilities), it could've been me.Author's response
Good to know. Commander Evans, Starfleet Engineer specializing in warp drive engineering and theory. Currently assigned to Starfleet Research and Development. And oh yeah, wizard.
