"Hi, Ma," Zell said, on the phone. "Hey, can I ask you
something without hurting your feelings? It's just that
I'm about to go off to fight a battle I might not come
back from and I..."

"You want to know about your birth family," Mrs. Dincht
smiled. "Your mom died in childbirth, so I never knew
her. Your father was a good man. But back then, he was
in the army, and couldn't take care of you even if they
had told him."

"He never knew?" Zell asked. A hopeful thought grew in
his mind. "Is there any chance he might still be alive
then?"

"Anything's possible," Mrs. Dincht told her son. "I guess
he could still be out there."

"What's his name?" Zell inquired.

"Let me think," Mrs. Dincht pondered. "It's been a long time.
Oh, what did that general tell me. That's right. His name was
Loire. Laguna Loire."
