-Chapter 04-

Irvine Kinneas considered his father as he field-stripped his gun
and made sure all the parts were in working order.

He'd been very little when his father had died. The Galbadian Army
had come to their house, claiming the good man to be a traitor.

Not only had Irvine's father ignored the draft, he'd sheltered others
who also did not wish to fight. This, to the army's way of thinking
was treason.

They had come in the night and execute him on the spot. Then they
took the body away, depriving the sobbing widow of her right to bury
her husband.

A year later, his mother had married Mr. Kinneas, a kind man who tended
to her lawns and had looked after her and Irvine after her husband had
been murdered.

He looked at the picture of the dark-haired, blue-eyed man, sprawled
and laughing admidst flowers and butterflies, and then at the gun in
his hand. "Sorry, Dad." he apologised. "But sometimes a fight can't be
helped."
