-Chapter 03-

Squall polished his gunblade, his mind focused on the battle to
come. What would the President of Esthar be like? What were the
battle plans of the most powerful man in the world?

As he considered this, he thought about the family he'd never known.
Wondering what his father might have been like, whether he'd have
been proud or ashamed of him, Squall closed his eyes.

The dream came at once. Laguna was alone again, lying on a bed
somewhere. Tears flowed from his usually smiling eyes, his heart
clearly broken by some terrible tragedy as he clung to something
that had probably once belonged to a person who'd been very
special to him.

"Raine," Laguna sobbed. "Please, forgive me. I should have come
for you, but I was too much of a coward. Me, the Sorceress Hunter
of Esthar. What a joke I am. I didn't have the courage to face your
father and tell him how much I loved you. They didn't tell me about
our child. If I'd known, I'd have come charging in and got you out
of there.

He looked down at the item he'd been clutching and Squall's mind
reeled. It was the Lionheart pendant. The same one that now rested
about Squall's neck.

Shocked back to his own reality, Squall slowly shook his hand.

"You have got to be kidding me."
