Slowly my eyes fluttered open. I groaned, my head was throbbing and the light around me was dim. I strained to see in the darkness and I searched the room to fine my source of light; candles. The room was made of old, crumbling brick, and dust and mold festered in the corners making it look purely medieval. I rolled my neck to loosen it, I was sore. Then I spotted them, the chains. I was chained to the wall, my arms above my head screamed in pain as I moved. Far off I heard the sounds of a rusted door opening.
My heart pounded and I knew what must have happened. A vampire, one must have finally caught up to me, upset over a lost mate. I searched the ground for anything, anything at all I could use to defend myself. I wasn’t going down without a fight. Footsteps, I could hear them coming closer, ever so slowly, the adrenaline in my body raced and I felt a strange pressure against my mouth. I was going to die. The realization hit me and for a minute I didn’t care at all, so long as I took them with me. The footsteps stopped, the figure loomed outside the door. My breath caught as my captor walked in.
He spoke. “Hailey?”
I stared as the slender figure appeared in front of me. Short dark hair, tall, and utterly handsome I hardly recognized him in the dark like this but I knew who it was; Mikey WayI stared as the slender figure appeared in front of me. I tried to open my mouth but realized the pressure was tape. The bastard had chained me and taped my mouth! What was he going to do now, Rape me? I struggled against the wall trying to break out of the chains but I couldn’t ignore the tone in his voice that had actually seemed surprised. Another figure was outside the door now. Multiple figures now, all of them slowly started filing into the room. I recognized them one by one and saw Mikey accusing them with his eyes.Gerard, Ray, Bob, and Frank stood before me all dressed in the same outfits they’d been in at the concert.
“What are you doing with Hailey down here? I thought you said you had the person who had killed Brian.” His voice was cold and harsh towards the others and as I stared I noticed an aura I’d never seen him with before. A vampiric aura; my jaw dropped behind the tape and I quickly closed it. My high school sweetie was a vampire? Something I was devoted to killing? Just shows how well I was trained back then.
Bob spoke first, “Don’t worry she’s not the only one we caught. There were a few others that helped her. We could smell them on his ashes, I can understand them killing a dangerous vampire but.” He turned a grimace at me. “Brian was innocent; you know what we have to do.”
Mikey’s eyes widened as he realized what I had already grasped, that I had to die. “Guy’s you know that she could have been around him just simply at the time before he died she is-“
Gerard cut him off. “We found this under her bed.” He tossed the stake I had used, still covered in ash, on the ground. “And if you would, check her aura, or try to taste her.”
My eyes widened and I almost started to panic but as long as I acted like I had no idea what they were doing I had a chance… play the innocent victim. Then one of the things they had said kicked in, ‘she’s not the only one we caught…’ the meaning kicked in and I lost it for a minute. I started to thrash around and I kicked my legs at the chains above my head, glad for my flexibility I kicked one of the badly rusted holders off the wall. Unfortunately I had missed what they were saying and they thought it was a reaction.
Ray motioned and Mikey’s eyes widened in horror. “You see Mikey? That’s exactly what we mean; do you think a human could do that? Does she even look different than she did in high school? Don’t tell me that you’re going to try to convince us otherwise now.”
Mikey nodded. “Alright, I won’t try, not after that reaction. You can’t kill her though.”
I Bob scoffed. “Really; why can’t we?”
Mikey’s eyes turned cold. “Because I won’t let you. Let her live and I’ll keep my eye on her; and the others.”
Frank raised an eyebrow. “You think you can control them? They’d just as soon kill you.”
Mikey smirked. “I know, but does it matter? I know the rules of their clan; do not kill innocent vampires lest they have been charged. They won’t touch me.”
Gerard smiled. “Alright Mikey, since you know their rules so well stay with them. Just don’t get yourself killed, or I’m going to have to kill her myself. No one touches my brother.”
I nodded, that was one thing Gerard and I had always had in common. If someone hurt our brother we’d protect them if they couldn’t, regardless the price.
