I decided to make the most of my second day of class. Walking into the school building I was greeted by none other than Alex.
I knew it was him by the way he cleared his throat and grabbed onto my elbow.
“Good Morning Alex.”
Nothing. Not a single word was uttered. I felt a little awkward. I did not understand why he was not talking to me. Had I done something wrong. Had I not done something. I became a little worried when I noticed that we were not walking in the direction we should have been walking in.
“Alex where are we going?”
Again nothing. Not a single word. No slowing down in his pace nothing. I felt him push a door open and then felt him dragging me up a flight of stairs. I didn’t have class on the second floor first period and my homeroom was on the first floor. Where the hell was he taking me. Deciding that enough was enough I tried to pull my arm from his. Naturally walking up a flight of stairs is not the best place to try and do something like this. Within a second I lost my footing.
“Shit!” I heard him exclaim as my foot slipped from beneath me. I was almost certain that I was going to plummet to my death down a flight of stairs. That’s when my body hit something solid and hands grabbed me by the waist.
I recognized the cologne at once. It was Jack.
“Jeez Alex. You could have warned me if you were going to throw girls at me.” He said.
“I’m so sorry Celeste. We wanted to surprise you and I could not tell you where I was taking you. They made me swear….” He didn’t sound convincing.
I didn’t hear anything else that Alex was saying. My attention was on the person in front of me.
I couldn’t help but realize that Jack’s hands had not moved from their spot on my waist. I also could not help but notice that I was pressed up against him in a very compromising position. I could feel the blood rushing to my face and turned my face away from him.
Before I could one of his hands grasped my chin.
“You’re blushing?”
Great Celeste. Make a complete fool out of yourself on the second day of classes. I didn’t understand why he made me nervous but he did.
“I am not blushing.” I said knowing that I was lying.
“I’m looking right at you Celeste. You are blushing. I think its cute.”
“Yeah well I think its annoying.” I said trying to dislodge myself from him.
Surprisingly Jack turned into a rabid pit bull refusing to let go once he caught its prey. He now had a death grip on my waist pulling me in closer to him.
“why did you ditch us yesterday? We had a nice surprise for you. It took a lot of work.”
I was confused. I told to tell them I had an appointment hadn't I. He said that he had told them. Didn’t he?
“I told Tyler to tell you…”
At the mention of Tyler's name Jack suddenly turned rigid. He was stiff as a board. Suddenly he began to released me slightly. He was starting to push me away again.
“Yeah well he didn’t tell us anything.” He said moving his hands from my waist and grasping my hand.
He began leading me down the flight of stairs Alex had managed to drag me up. “See you at lunch Alex.”
He called over his shoulder.
Once we were on the first floor again and off of stairs he spoke again.
“Tyler didn’t give us that message.”
“He told me that he would. I even gave him my number to give to you so that we could talk about the project for lit.”
“So you didn’t want to switch partners or something.”
What was he talking about?
“No. I like that you are my partner. I wanted us to be able to pick a good scene to do.”
“So you didn’t blow us off yesterday? You still want to hang.”
“No and yes. Why would you think that I would blow you off? I told you that I wanted to be your friend. Its just that yesterday I had a doctors appointment right after school. I have Tyler last period so he walked me to the car. I didn’t have a chance to come looking for you and its not like I could find your locker anyway. I am sorry that Tyler didn’t tell you. Maybe he forgot.”
I was hoping that my rambling was making sense. The last thing I needed in this friendship was more confusion. I wanted to be Jacks friend. I wanted him to be my friend. I wanted to be able to hang out with him without worry about saying something stupid.
“Its cool Celeste. Nothing to worry about. Friends right.”
“Yeah friends.”
“would it be wrong if I hugged you?”
I could not help but laugh. He sounded like a lost 5 year old.
“Friends hug Jack. You can so give me a hug.” I said throwing my hands open.
The next thing I knew I felt him pull me towards him and give me the biggest hug I have ever gotten. At least from a person I only knew for two days.
Pulling away from him I smiled and put my hand out. He took the hint and grasped my hand walking me to homeroom.
Things got interesting when we got there. Actually interesting was not the word I would use. Disastrous was the word I would use.
“There you are pretty girl. I’ve been looking all over for you.”
Tyler.
For the second time in one day I could feel Jack tense up next to me. This time he did something different though. He let go of my hand and took a step back.
“Hey Barakat.” Tyler said.
“Hey.”
“Can I talk to Celeste for a minute. Alone.”
“Yeah sure. I’ll see you in class Celeste.”
I could hear him walk into the room. I could not help but feel a little angry at Tyler. He didn’t need to be so rude to Jack. I didn’t understand why he was being this way.
“Why didn’t you give him my message yesterday?” Short sweet and to the point.
“Oh. Look I tried to find them but those boys get into so much trouble its impossible to figure out just where they are. I had to get to work. I did try looking for them. Don’t be angry.” He said grabbing my hand and pulling me away from the door.
“I’m not angry its just that I need to make sure that things go well for me here. I’m behind on homework because Jack never got my message and didn’t call.” I said in one breath.
“Speaking of not calling. You never answered my text this morning.” Boy does he just get right to it. I knew what he was talking about and I was secretly hoping that he would not bring it up.
“I didn’t know how to answer it.”
“You could have said something along the lines of ‘that would be nice’, or maybe ‘sure I’d love to spend more time with you’.”
“I didn’t want to be to presumptuous . I didn’t want to assume that you wanted…”
“Assume all you want Celeste cause you are probably thinking the right things. The truth is that I do want to spend more time with you, here at school, outside of school, on the weekends.” He said grasping both of my hands. “How about this. I see you for Physics today. I know that you need to work with Barakat so you guys can hang out at lunch and during the free period at the end of the day. Then after school maybe I can chill at your house so that we can start working on the project together.”
I couldn’t help but sigh in relief. Tyler was making this so much simpler than I could have imagined them. How could I stay angry at him.
“That sounds great.” I said as the warning bell rang signaling the beginning of homeroom.
“good. But I’ve got to run. Don’t want to get in trouble now do I?” He said.
“Nope guess not.”
He lead me to the door. Before leaving he opened the door, lead me to my seat and kissed the top of my hand. “So we are good for after school then?”
“Yeah. See you in physics.”
“Bye.” As Tyler walked out of the room I could hear Jack sigh next me.
I’d never understand what the issue was between those two.
I knew it was him by the way he cleared his throat and grabbed onto my elbow.
