I bite my fingernails as we pull up to the prison. Andy slaps my hand. I stop biting my fingernails and unbuckle my seat belt. We step out of Andy’s car and walk inside. We sign in as visitors and they say they’ll send Pete out into the visiting area. We sit down at the table and wait for him. Andy and Mark share a chair, because they’re that skinny. Since they’re like stick then…. could they start a fire while having sex? Pete walks in the visiting area. He has a black eye and his lip is busted. He smiles nervously.

“What happened?” I gasp.

“Nothing I just…. Well me and this guy… we don’t see eye to eye. He’s quite racist and he thinks I’m half Hispanic or something…”

“What?”

“Yeah, oh and he’s against non-hetero-sexual people.”

“That’s stupid…”

“Yes but its fine I can get out of here in a few months.”

“How?”

“Well… I can do parole, community service, and pay all of the fines…”

“I thought you weren’t given the chance of parole.” Mark raises an eyebrow.

“Good behavior gets you further than people think. I’m the only one not trying to pick fights and such…except this one guy in there for life. Eric. He murdered like twelve people. Then turned himself in. They were all people he knew from high school. And he’s really nice. You wouldn’t imagine he’d ever do that.”

“Scary…” I say.

He nods “So how’ve you guys been?”

Andy shrugs “Alright.”

Mark frowns “My grandmothers sick…. Again.”

“Really? Wow that sucks.”

Mark nods.

Joe shrugs “Pretty good.”

I remain silent, thinking of a proper response. I haven’t been ‘alright’. Nor have I been miserable. I’ve actually been pretty happy with Joe but part of me can’t be happy. I’m never just happy. I’m always happy with a pinch of misery. Why is that? I don’t know.

“How have you been, Patrick?” Pete asks me with a slight frown.

“Ok I guess.”

Joe looks over at me with a slight frown.

I shrug at him.

“So… any wedding ideas?” Pete asks Joe and I.

Joe nods “A few.”

“Like?” Pete smiles. He’s always had an interest in weddings.

“Well we aren’t going to be in horribly uncomfortable clothes.” Joe says.

“Cool! When?”

“Sometime in the fall. Not sure exactly when…” I smile at Joe.

“Yeah… Cause that’s your favorite season, right?” Pete asks me.

I nod “Kinda…”

“And Andy’s trying to convince Patrick not to wear a hat.” Joe grins.

“Sooo not happening.” Pete laughs.

I nod “Yes. Not Happening.”

Joe takes off my hat and rakes his fingers through my hair.

“I like your hair.” He says.

I pout and put my hat back on.

Mark smiles “I bet Joe’s the only person who gets away with that.”

I nod and glare at Joe.

Joe pouts at me.

I smile and roll my eyes, laying my head on his arm.

Pete asks more about the wedding and helps us come up with ideas. We stay for a few more hours talking about everything and nothing. Part of me was getting too much of Pete, but the rest felt like everything was normal. The five of us, sitting around talking. It felt like everything was back to the way it should be. Which made me want to leave more. Things aren’t the same. Pete’s in jail. He’s no longer in FOB. He hurt me terribly. I can’t just completely look over that. Joe looks over at me. Able to read my mind, or my mood at least, he says that he has something he has to do. We stand up and I stretch my arms. Pete hugs everyone. When he comes to me I want to run. He hugs me close and whispers into my ear. The words that roll off his tongue leave me in a bit of confusion. He could mean multiple things by it and all of them make me feel uneasy. I follow Joe out of the room watching my feet as we go to Andy’s car, the words still whispered in my ear.

I don’t care about my guilty pleasure for you.
