The next two days of training went by without incident, meaning Gerard wasn’t on shift, and I was disappointed. Instead I spent my time listening to the babble that came out of Tina’s mouth. Thankfully Wednesday was my last training shift with her and I was going to be on my own from here on in.
I got home on Wednesday night only to find my front door unlocked. A fresh wave of panic washed over my body. I don’t know why, but I pulled my handbag closer to my body and pushed the door open slowly. With my mobile phone acting as a torch I flashed it around the living room. Although I couldn’t see much I continued tip toeing through my little unit.
I got to my bedroom door and was overcome with relief. There in my bed lay my boyfriend Damien. I had forgotten that we spent every Wednesday night together. He laid all curled up in the blankets on my bed. I walked over and stroked his face, he looked like an angel. He began to stir.
‘Oh bub, your home.’
‘Sorry I took so long honey. You scared me.’
‘Aw did I? I’m sorry babe. How did I manage to do that anyways? I know you scare easily, but I didn’t sneak up on you this time.’
‘Oh I just forgot you were going to be here tonight, and I freaked out when the front door was unlocked.’ He sat up and leaned against the headboard.
‘Why did you forget I was coming? We always spend Wednesday nights together.’
‘It’s this new job, and this dude that works there, I can’t stop thinking about him.’
‘Is this part where I get jealous?’
‘Oh no darling, no. It’s just his a little strange.’
‘What do you mean babe?’
I explained to Damien the weird mood swings I witnessed from Gerard. I don’t think Damien was to overly concerned with what I had to say because he leaned up and began unbuttoning my shirt and slid it off my shoulders.
‘… and his only ever really smiled at me once, when he told me about my brake lights, otherwise I feel like his staring daggers at me… Babe are you listening to me?’ He was sucking on the left side of my neck when he looked up at me with those puppy dog eyes.
‘Hun, I think you are worrying about nothing. He seems like a weirdo. If I were you try your best to stay away from him, now come here.’ Damien pulled me into bed and removed the rest of my clothes. We spent the next two hours reacquainting ourselves with each other, while keeping the neighbours awake.
The next day I skipped into work with a big smile on my face. My smile grew instantly bigger when there was no Tina behind the desk either, I finally was on my own.
I put my handbag away and started going through the arrivals for the rest of the day. It was then that I realised I was on my own. There should be someone else here with me. Tina said that there is at least always two people on shift. My palms began to grow sweaty and my heart started to race. I could smell him before I could see him. My first ever shift on my own was going to be with Gerard.
He came out from our little office behind reception and stared at me. He didn’t say hello as he brushed by me, he just went straight to a free computer. I closed my eyes and took a deep breath as I pretended to be very interested in the arrivals list for the day.
As I sat there reading my report I could of sworn I saw his eyes glance over at me. Or maybe I wanted his eyes to glance over at me, because I was glancing at him. The silence between us was becoming unbearable. The sound of his fingers tapping at the keyboard and the lame lobby music was beginning to drive me into a small space of insanity. I couldn’t take it anymore
‘So, uh, its nice to meet you, my name is Virginia.’ He looked away from his computer screen and cocked his head to the side as he looked at me.
‘I know who you are.’
‘Duh, how silly of me, we’ve already met, that day in Ray’s office.’
‘Don’t call him Ray. It’s Mr Toro to you. And I know your name because I looked at your name badge. Are we done here?’
If there was a smile on my face it quickly became extinct by the acid words that came out of Gerard’s mouth. I turned on my heel and headed to the safety of the little office behind the reception desk. I leaned up against the wall and took in some deep breaths. What the hell was this guys problem? I was trying to be nice, wasn’t I? God why am I questioning if I was being nice, of course I was. His the one with the problem not me.
After a few more minutes of pepping myself back up again I walked back out to the reception desk. He was busy with a check in. He had a warm welcoming smile on his face as he spoke with the businessman he was checking in. He even cracked a joke. How is this possible? How can he change face to quickly? He noticed I was staring at him and waved a hand over to me, ushering me to come towards.
I didn’t need to think twice as I walked towards him. ‘Mr Jenkins, this is Virginia she is just new to the team. I hope you don’t mind, I’d rather her stand next to me as I check you in so she can see clearly what I am doing instead of standing all the way down the end.’
‘No not at all Gerard, I don’t mind at all.’ I blushed a little as I smiled back to the guest and kept my eyes on the screen as Gerard continued on. He then handed over the room key to Mr Jenkins and wished him a wonderful stay. I continued standing next to Gerard like a goof with a fake grin on my face. When Mr Jenkins had safely exited the lobby and in an elevator I turned to him.
‘Why did you do that? I already know how to check a guest in.’
‘Because Mr Jenkins wanted to know who the new girl was, and if you really did have a hickey on the side of neck, and guess what, you do.’ He smirked and headed to the back office. My hand immediately made its way to the left side of my neck.
Fuck Damien. Fuck Mr Jenkins. Fuck Gerard.
