Chapter Nine

Third period came quickly- the time Legal studies was on. They were to all meet in the library to do research. Eva had to agree with Liza, Gerard Way was a great teacher. They sat down and were told to log into the interent to research a crime and write how the law was effective in achieving justice.

As they logged on a news headline popped up.

“Gerard Way Leaving or just Teaching?” and a large picture of him holding a briefcase and papers outside Eva’s school.

The strangest thing about having Mr. Way as a teacher was that everyone could know everything about his personal life. Eva printed the article out and headed over to Mr. Way who was sitting at a desk pouring over more essays.

“Mr. Way,” said Eva. Mr. Way looked up.

“Yeah!” he said trying to look at the paper in Eva’s hand.

“Mr. Way, sorry to bother you,” began Eva. “But, I thought you might be interested in this,” handing him the piece of paper.

It read:

Gerard Way has been spotted several thousands of miles away from his band and family- to be found in Sydney, Australia to be exact. The countless reports have prompted our reporters to research the accusation further. The singer has been found to be teaching at a high school which we cannot name for legal reasons. Mikey Way his brother has refused to comment only stating that the bands fourth album will go ahead with Gerard. Wife, Lyn- Z Way has also refused comment but has stated that their baby is healthy and strong.

“Thanks, for bringing this to my attention, but I was already aware of this. I think you should concentrate on your own work rather than that of others, Eva,” said Mr. Way abruptly. Eva hated how he always said her name at the end of every sentence. She also knew from that sentence that he knew Eva had been writing Liza’s art essays.

“Sorry, you’re right Mr. Way,” said Eva innocently but hoping the Mr. Way at the end pissed him off. He was right however, Eva should worry more about herself than other people’s lives.

Eva continued her research and got it finished- a new thing she was trying- to actually do her work in class.

When the bell had rang, Eva got to pack up but Mr. Way shouted her name and called her over to where he was sitting. Eva walked over nervously, the only people in the library was her and him. The librarian had even walked out.

“Take a seat,” he said awkwardly. Eva did as she was told.

“I am sorry about how rude I was to you before, I understand you were only looking out for me, but I know everything before it reaches the media. It is my life after all,” he said quietly not looking her in the eyes. He was fidgeting and kept touching the back of his neck.

“Of course, Sir. I am sorry,” said Eva.

“Eva, please stop apologising, you make me feel so volatile,” he said angrily but quietly- they were afterall in the library.

“I’m...” began Eva but stopped before she said the words.

“Look, I’m sorry again Eva, I’m not with it and I shouldn’t be taking this out on a student, maybe you should go” he said hurriedly trying to rectify the situation.

Eva went to get up but quickly sat back down again.

“Mr. Way, I know I’m only a student... who is very weird, but if you want to talk about something, I can listen,” she said.

“I thought I told you to go,” he said not looking up from his papers on the ground.

Eva left. She did not here him whisper

“You aren’t weird.”

Liza had asked Eva to meet her in the art room at lunch once again, so Eva headed straight there after her encounter with Mr. Way.

She saw Liza entranced in her lino print again and walked up to her and put her bag on the table next to her. They continued on their happy banter, Eva not mentioning Mr. Way at all. There conversation was strange as usual.

“So the people were all like, aww fuck! aliens abducted my daughter...” said Eva through tears of laughter while Liza was looking at her with a huge grin on her face. Liza’s eyes suddenly shifted to the door and Eva spun around to see Mr. Way storming in not looking at them. The room went silent.

“Carry on, I just need to get something from the store room,” he said coldly. The girls just worked in silence.

“Eva,” Liza whispered. Eva looked up from her paint mixing. “Go and get some paints.” Liza was hinting to go and see what Mr. Way was doing in the storeroom.

“I’m scared,” said Eva. Liza giggled. Eva got up and opened the handle of the door. She stepped in the room. The door closed behind her.

Mr. Way was right at the end of the storeroom and he didn’t look up at Eva as she entered -although he wanted to look desperately.

Eva walked in slowly with a paper plate in her hand and walked about halfway to where the paints were. She was about a metre from Mr. Way.

“What are you even doing in the art room, if you don’t do art?” he said coldly still looking down at some pencils in his hand.

“I’m sorry, I can go, I just like hanging out with Liza,” she said. His face shot up. He looked like he could kill Eva but Eva knew he couldn’t touch her.

“What did I say about apologising!?” he said violently. He had moved closer to Eva and Eva stood still. She knew he wouldn’t hurt her, but then again the media might not know about his violent streaks and therfore Eva could have been obsessing over a man who killed people.

“I’m sorry,” said Eva trying to look strong and evil, she knew she just looked lame.

He put one hand on the shelf behind Eva which locked Eva into a position where she was only a few centimetres from his face. She could smell his fruity breath. He had eaten some gum. She did not want to open her mouth in case hers didn’t smell as nice- a pathetic thought.

“I know you have been doing Liza’s art essays,” he said whispering violently into her face. His eyes were staring into hers. She did not break down still staring into his. Her eyes felt like blinking and they were beggining to sting.

“You can’t prove it,” she whispered back. His eyes blinked and Eva pushed him away and walked out of the storeroom leaving him standing there shocked looking at her walk out the door. She picked up her bag, said she had to go somewhere to Liza and walked out of the art room.
