“Lights out everyone! Let’s go!” I hear the voices of the nurses echoing down the hallway. I’m already in bed, though, but I don’t plan on sleeping at all. I’m just waiting.
Frank and I are escaping tonight.
All day, I’ve been nervous. Frank kept rubbing his hands over mine to try and calm me down, but it didn’t stop my heart racing at the knowledge of what we’re about to do. Mr. Misfit noticed in my session, but I didn’t let him in on it. He probably thinks we’ll get back to it tomorrow, but he doesn’t know I won’t be here tomorrow. That thought scares me a little bit, though…
It takes about ten minutes for everyone to get settled. Then, the lights are finally turned off. It’s too quiet for my liking. I’m used to the silence that the night brings here, but tonight it’s different, obviously. I lay in my bed and stare at the ceiling, waiting. I can already feel my hands start to shake and sweat a little. I’m nervous as all hell. I’m still not entirely sure if Frank and I are going to make it out without someone catching us. Or what will happen once we get out. Or if I’ll ever see Gerard again. It’s scaring me a lot.
A cool brush of air is all I need to know that Frank’s here. I sit up and look around the dark room for him.
“I’m here.” he whispers and I feel his hands on my shoulder.
Reaching out, I grab onto his shoulders and know that he’s sitting in front of me, “Okay.” I breathe.
“You alright?” Frank asks.
“Yeah. Fine.”
“…Okay…Are you ready?”
“I don’t know.” I admit.
“Everything will be okay. You know that, right?”
“I-I don’t know…”
“I know you probably feel really unsure, right now, but trust me when I say it’ll be worth it. We’ll be free.”
“I’ll never see my family again…I’ll never see Gerard.” I whisper, mostly to myself.
I feel Frank’s hands drop from my shoulders. “Okay…I understand if, you know…I can go by myself.”
“No!” I say, “Don’t. No, I want to go with you. Really.”
“Mikey, if you’re lying, don’t. I don’t want to force you into this. If you’re scared of losing your brother that badly, then stay. If it’s what you want, I’m not stopping you. You know I don‘t want you to do something you don‘t want to.”
“No, I want to go.”
“Really?”
“Yeah. Listen to me, remember?”
“Why? You obviously aren’t comfortable with coming. How am I meant to believe this is what you really want?”
“Because, you idiot, I love you.” I say and suddenly slap my hand over my mouth. That wasn’t meant to happen. I hear Frank stutter a little and immediately regret telling him my real feelings. I didn’t even know I felt that way until I just said it then. Or, at least, I hadn’t really admitted it to myself.
“W-What?” Frank asks.
My breathing quickens a little as I lower my hand and whisper, “I-I’m sorry, but it’s true. And I totally get it if you don’t feel the same way and I-”
My words are cut off by Frank’s lips on mine. Damn, he’s good at shutting me up.
After pulling away, he says, “Stop rambling. I do.”
“Huh?” I ask, a little shocked.
“Feel the same way…I love you too, Mikes.”
I breathe out the biggest sigh of relief I’ve ever breathed in my life and smile like an idiot. Good thing it’s dark because I don’t want Frank seeing me look like a total dork. Without warning, Frank crashes his lips against mine again. I wrap my arms around him and pull him close to me, deepening the kiss as much as I possibly can. I’m practically on top of him trying to kiss him with as much force as I can. I’ve been waiting too long to kiss him like this. I give a small whimper of protest when Frank breaks away and pushes me off him gently.
“We need to get out of here, now.” he breathes, “So, we can continue this later.”
Blushing and smiling like a teenage girl, I nod my head and get off him. I stand up next to my bed, grab Frank’s hand and pull him up too.
I’m too happy for words. Frank actually loves me. He loves me. For the first time in a while, I actually feel good about myself. It’s an indescribable feeling. So fucking amazing. I imagine what life will be like when we’re out. Sure, I’m scared shitless that we’ll have no where to run to and we have no real plans at all, but I don’t care. I realize that as long as I’m with Frank, I don’t care at all. He makes me feel so unbelievably amazing and I want it to last forever. But, wait a minute…it could last forever. Literally. I mean, vampires live forever. Frank’s a vampire. Maybe he could change me and we’ll be together forever and it’ll be awesome.
“Frank?”
“Yeah?” Frank asks.
“…After we break out, can you, like, y’know…change me?”
“Wait, what?”
“I wanna be like you…like, a vampire.” I whisper, smirking a little.
“Are you insane?” he asks me.
“Well, we are in a nuthouse, so…”
“Mikey, I can’t do that. I could kill you.”
“I trust you.” I tell him, smiling.
“You’re insane.”
“I know I am, but you aren’t. So, change me?”
“Why?”
“Because if we’re doing this, I want it to last forever.”
“Well, so do I, but I don’t want to risk it.” Frank tells me firmly.
“I do.” I reply.
“Oh, god.” he sighs before pecking my lips, “We’ll talk about this after this is over, okay?”
“Okay,” I agreed, “But I won’t be dropping it. So…”
“Yeah, yeah. Now let’s go.”
He takes my hand and we make our way out the door and creep silently down the halls. I want to ask Frank why he doesn’t just use his speedy vampire skills to take us there, but I fear that, if I talk, someone might hear us. So, I remain silent. As we walk through the hallways of the clinic, my heart starts beating faster and faster. I’m not sure if it’s from being scared or from excitement or something else. I just don’t know. It’s when we get to the security guards office that I really begin freaking out.
Frank turns to look at me and I must look scared because he has to grab my face and make me look into his eyes to calm down for a moment.
“Okay,” Frank says, “Maybe you should wait out here. You probably don’t want to see or hear this.”
I stiffly shake my head, “No.” I breathe, “I wanna be one of you. I wanna see.”
Rolling his eyes, Frank says, “Fine, but don’t say I didn’t warn you.”
I nod my head and follow him into the security guards office. He looks up from his desk the second we walk in. Frank slams the door shut behind us. His desk has a sign that says ‘Officer Dominic’ and he has short, but wavy blonde hair in a style that just does not suit him.
“Um. Shouldn’t you boys be in bed?” Dominic asks us.
I’m too nervous to say anything. Instead I lean against the wall next to the door and stay perfectly still, relying on Frank to do the talking. Which he does, sort of. In response to Dominic’s question, Frank just gives an evil smirk and shakes his head.
He suddenly looks a little defensive, “I’m warning you, boys. I’ll call your nurses.”
Frank tuts at Dominic and says, “You’ll do no such thing.” before grabbing the intercom Dominic was previously reaching for and smashing it against the wall.
The guard’s face turns pale and he suddenly looks extremely scared. Poor guy.
“H-Help!” he tries to yell, but seems to afraid for a proper strong voice to come out. I honestly can’t imagine how scared he must be feeling. I mean, I freaked out almost this bad when Frank just showed me his fangs, but I’d probably pass out completely if he was giving me the evil looks he was currently shooting as Dominic.
Frank just laughs at him a little when he’s afraid, and that’s when I decide to step in, “F-Frank, stop playing with him! Just do it.”
“Aww.” Frank whines, “Okay.”
“D-Do what?!” the guard whispers. “What are you-”
Frank flashes across the office and jumps on top of Dominic before he can finish his sentence. I stare with wide eyes as Frank pulls the guards head back, flashes his fangs and sinks them deep into the skin of his neck. Dominic’s eyes are wide as he tries to scream but all that comes out are chokes of air. Slowly, his skin loses color and his eyelids begin to flutter closed. Only a moment later is when his body falls limp completely, all of him paler than he was a few moments ago. I grip onto the wall like it’s my only lifeline. When Frank finally lets go of the guard, he has a few drops of blood trickling down his chin. The sight is too scary for words.
“Shit, Mikes.” Frank exclaims, wiping the blood from his face, “You’re paler than he is.”
“R-R-Really?” I whisper, still staring at the corpse with wide eyes.
“Yeah…Are you scared?” he asks me, seriously.
“N-No…” I say, “Just a little…shaken, I guess.”
“I’m sorry. I shouldn’t have let you see that.” Frank says as he wraps his arms around my waist, detaching me from the wall.
I hug him back with shaking arms, “It’s fine. F-Forget it…Have you got the keycard?”
Frank lets go of me and I nearly stumble over, but I grab onto the wall again. He jumps on top of Dominic and reaches into his pocket, pulling out the keycard, “Let’s get the fuck out of here.”
I nod and shakily walk out the door with him close behind me. We quickly make our way through more hallways until we finally come across the door that separates the insane ones from the real world. Frank rushes forward and swipes the card. The red light turns green and he opens it, quickly ushering me through. We creep our way to the reception area when we both freeze and hide.
We’ve both seemed to forgotten that the receptionist is always at the front desk.
“Shit!” Frank whispers.
“Now, what?” I ask him.
“I don’t know…give me a second.” he tells me before transcending into deep thought.
An idea suddenly hits me, “Frank, you’re really fast, right?”
“Obviously.”
“Do you think you can get outside without her seeing?”
“Well, yeah…But I’m not leaving you behind!” he whispers.
“That’s not what I’m saying.” I whisper back, “What I’m saying is, you could run outside and make some noise or something. Distract the receptionist so she goes outside to see what the noise is. While she’s gone, you come back and get me and we run for it.”
Frank thinks for a moment before smiling, “You are genius.”
“Yeah, yeah.” I blush back, “Now get out there and distract her.”
Frank nods and before I can even blink my eyes, he’s gone. I stay where I am and make no noise whatsoever. I suddenly hear smashing glass outside. What the hell is he breaking? I glance over at the receptionist to see if she heard it too. She definitely did. She stands up and looks through the glass walls to search for where the sound is coming from, but she sees nothing. Neither do I. It isn’t until Frank starts screaming like he’s in unbearable pain that the receptionist stands up and hesitantly walks outside. The screaming Frank is doing is so convincing, I almost start to worry that he’s actually in pain, but I’m quickly relieved when he rushes in, bringing that cool air with him.
“She’s distracted.” he tells me, “Quick, let’s go. Close your eyes.”
I close them and I feel his arms wrap around me and freezing air is suddenly surrounding us both. I assume his using his speedy vampire skills to run away from the clinic as fast as he can, carrying me.
“What did you break to make the smashing noise?” I ask him, randomly.
Chuckling slightly, Frank replies, “I just jumped up a street light and smashed the glass out of it.”
“Smooth.”
“Yep.”
“…Where are we going?” I ask him.
“Somewhere that isn’t here.” he tells me.
I close my eyes tighter and hug myself close to him as he takes us both away from our troubles.
