“Mikey, you can open your eyes now.” Frank tells me, in a tired voice.
I’ve been holding on for dear life and closing my eyes as tightly as I can the entire time he was carrying me. I let my feet find the ground and release his neck from my arms, opening my eyes again.
“Geeze, Mikes,” he groans, “If I were human, you would’ve cut off my circulation and killed me.”
“Sorry.” I whisper.
“It’s okay.”
I take a few steps back from Frank and look to see where we are. We’re surrounded by trees and plants, I assume. It’s hard to see because of how dark it is.
“How long were you running for?” I ask, because I honestly wasn’t keeping track, “It didn’t feel very long.”
“It wasn’t.” Frank says, “Maybe ten or fifteen minutes. I don’t know.”
I nod, “Where are we?”
“Well, we haven’t left Belleville, yet. In fact, I only took us a few miles away from the clinic.”
“Okay…”
Frank sighs what sounds to be a happy sigh, “Holy shit, Mikey. We did it. We‘re out!”
“Yeah,” I reply, sadly, “We did.”
“Please, don’t sound so enthusiastic just for my sake.” Frank says, sarcastically.
“Sorry. It’s just…Frank, you killed him.” I whisper. “Yeah, we’re out, but, fuck, we just murdered someone.”
“I know, Mikes. I’m so fucking sorry you had to see it…” Frank says, hugging me, “I’m sorry. Please don’t hate me.”
“I don’t hate you, Frank. I love you. Just, fuck.”
“I know. I love you too.” he whispers, “I’m sorry.”
“Don’t be. I’m just not used to seeing people get killed unless it‘s in a movie.” I attempt a laugh to lighten the mood, but Frank just hugs me tighter.
“I’m sorry.” he says, again.
“Stop apologizing.”
“I can’t help it.” Frank sighs, “I feel like an idiot. I shouldn’t have let you seen it.”
“Okay. You’re forgiven,” I say, rolling my eyes, “Now, will you please stop apologizing?”
“Sorr-…Never mind.”
I smile, even though he can’t see it. He’s too adorable sometimes. I squint my eyes and try to make out more of our surroundings, but the darkness of the night makes it a little too difficult.
As I hug Frank close to me, I can’t help but feel, well, a little sad. We’re out of that place with a coffin on our consciences. I probably won’t ever see Gerard again. Or my parents. Or anyone. We’ll have to leave. Once they know we’re gone, they’ll all be looking and if they find us, they’ll only take us right back there. By then, everyone will probably think we’re both mental and they might even try and separate us! I’m so not letting that happen.
“You okay?” Frank asks, looking at me.
“We can’t ever go back now. Can we?” I think out loud.
“No…I guess not.” he whispers.
“Oh, god…” I breathe as realization hits me, “This may just be the biggest mista-”
“Don’t say that.” Frank cuts me off, “Please don’t say that.”
“B-But,” I stutter as my eyes well up with small tears, “We can’t go back, anymore and…I’ll never see Gerard again. I can’t not see him, Frankie. I need him.”
“You really care about him, don’t you?” he asks, looking up at me with his chin on my chest.
I nod, “Yes. Frank, h-he’s my best friend.”
“But…he didn’t believe you, remember?”
“I know, Frank!” I cry, “I know that, but it doesn’t mean I don’t love him, and now I’m never gonna see him again!”
“You will, Mikes.” Frank says, but there’s an uncertainty in his voice that I pick up on, right away.
“Yeah?” I scoff, “How?”
Frank pauses before whispering, “…You wanna be like me, right?”
I frown, “Huh?” and then I realize what he’s talking about, “Oh…w-well, yeah. I mean…really?”
“I really do not want to risk it,” he sighs, “But, I’ll do it, if it’ll make you happy. Plus, it might help you see your brother.”
A spark of happiness shoots through me, like striking a match, and I grin like an idiot, “Frank, really?! You’d do that for me?”
“Of course I would.” he says and kisses my neck, “I love you, Mikes. I’ll do anything to make you happy.”
His words make me feel amazing. I can’t remember the last time I smiled this much, “And it could help me see Gee?”
“Aww, Gee is such a cute nickname.” Frank giggles, “And, yeah, it could help you see him.”
“How so?” I ask.
“Well,” he says, “Us vampires are fast. You could, like, see him, but he wouldn’t see you. He can’t. Once news spreads about us, they’ll just take us back, but then again we could run, but then you’ll really never see him again.”
“Okay, okay!” I say, wanting him to stop saying stuff like that, “I won’t let him see me…Screw vampires, we should be called ninjas.”
“Ninja vampires…” Franks says and then laughs a little, “We can be ninja vampires, Mikey.”
“So, you’re really gonna do this for me?” I ask, smiling.
“Yeah,” he breathes, “If it’ll make you happy.”
“Well…how do you feel about it?”
“Mikes, I’m just scared something will go wrong, that’s all. I don’t know much about it, anyway. I don’t want to hurt you…or worse.”
“You won’t.” I tell him, “I trust you, okay?”
He nods.
“Good. So, how long would it take for me to, like, change?” I ask.
“Well, I’m not sure.” Frank says, “When I woke up, they told me I’d be saying random shit for a few hours. Maybe, if I did it right now, you’d be changed by the morning…”
“Right now.” I breathe, “Really? Right now?”
“Yeah. I mean, if you want to. If you’re ready.”
“I think I am…”
“You’re absolutely sure?” he asks.
“Yeah. I am.” I say more firmly.
Frank grabs my arm and holds my wrist to his lips. He looks at it for a moment and then looks up at me.
“Mikey, I-I don’t wanna hurt you. Fuck, I’m gonna hurt you. I know I am.”
“Hey,” I say, holding his cheek with my free hand, “You won’t. I trust you. Please do this for me.”
“But it’s gonna hurt you. I know it is. It happened to me.” Frank says, with a pleading expression.
“I know,” I nod, “But after that, I’ll be okay. We can be together forever.”
“Aww…You sound like a cheesy romance film.” he smirks.
Rolling my eyes I chuckle, “Yeah, yeah. I know, but it’s true. So, please, Frankie, just do it.”
I hold my arm out to him again, holding my wrist in front of his lips. Sighing he holds it in his hand. I wait for him to do something, but he’s just biting his lip and staring at my wrist. He looks really nervous.
“It’ll be okay.” I whisper.
Frank gives in with a sigh, “Okay…Ready?”
I nod.
“I love you.” he tells me.
“I love you.” I echo.
Frank gently kisses my wrist and in a flash, his fangs are out. I only catch a short glimpse of them before he sinks them into my wrist.
I hiss at first because it stings like all hell.
Frank soon pulls his fangs back out of my hand and I see the blood dripping off them. My blood. Placing his lips over the drops of blood forming from his bite, he seals my broken skin and kisses it again.
Then the real pain sets in.
I groan as I feel shooting pains from the bite spread through my entire body. Soon enough, it’s pure agony. My heart is beating too fast and it feels like my insides are being burnt. I scream at the top of my lungs from the pain I’m in. I feel light-headed and fall to the ground. Within a split second, I feel Frank’s arms holding me, but the venom spreading through my veins is too painful for me to pay full attention to him. I can feel my body start to shake violently. Anyone else would think I’m having a seizure. I’m past the point of no return, now. No backward glances.
“Mikey!” I hear Frank cry as he tightens his grip around my shuddering body, “I’m so sorry! It’ll be over soon, I promise.”
“I-It f-f-fucking hurts!” I groan through clenched teeth before another heart wrenching scream escapes my throat.
“I know, I know. I’m so sorry, but just hold on. It’ll be over soon. I’ll be here.” Frank tells me, but his voice starts to echo.
I can feel a heavy darkness start to take over my brain. Breathing harshly, I try to hear what Frank is saying, but his voice is nothing but a blur now. Everything’s in slow motion. I’m not standing up, but I may as well be because I’m suddenly struck with a feeling that’s beyond dizzy.
“Mikey?” I hear Frank’s muffled voice, “Mikey?!”
I can’t respond. I choke on my own breath as I feel everything slip away.
I’m left alone in the darkness.
