Chapter Nine

Gerard came back for a jog when Meredith had just hung up the phone from talking to Bob. They had discussed whether getting a paternity test and she had quickly said goodbye and was cramming her cellphone back into her pocket as Gerard came through the door in his sweats and a t-shirt and a pair of Nikes.

Even sweaty the man looked amazing.

He turned off his iPod and stretched his limbs. “Who was that?” He asked curiously, his breathing slightly labored.

“Just an ad thing on the phone,” She lied.

“Cool. I’m gonna go take a shower. After that, I wanna show you something.” He said, smiling.

“Alright. Want me to make you a bagel or anything?” She asked. She hoped he said yes, she needed something to do instead of sitting on the couch.

He shrugged. “Coffee, please.”

Ten minutes later he was fresh and clean dressed in a pair of loose jeans and a plain black t-shirt. He held out his hands, one for the coffee and the other to help her up. He took a nice long sip and set it on their counter. “Now come upstairs with me, I’ve been dying to show you all weekend!” He said, his eyes bright.

Meredith followed him up the stairs, but instead of taking a left to their bedroom, he took a right to the guestroom at the end of the hall. Though they did have guests every now and then, she hadn’t been in the room at all that week. “What do you have to show me?” She asked.

“Just close your eyes. Don’t open them until I tell you.” Gerard said, his voice pumped with adrenaline.

She did. She heard him the click of the door and he moved her forward a couple feet. “Alright, open them.”

Meredith’s eyes went from seeking darkness to staring at a wonderful, sherbet orange colored room against the blonde wooden floors. The white trim stood out against the orange and in the center of the room lay a white area rug. Atop of the rug was a dark cherry wood crib with a mobile of stars and plants circling the moon. Beneath the window lay a new dresser with a hand painted copy of the solar system against its drawers. In the opposite corner lay the changing table with a few stuffed animals laying down on the matted bottom. Instead of doors to the smaller walk-in closet, white silk curtains separated the room and the closet.

It was the most wonderful thing she could have been surprised with.

“Oh Gerard!” She put a hand over her mouth while the over lay over her heart. Tears sprang to her eyes. In a second her hand was no longer over her heart but now on her baby bump, rubbing it soothingly.

“Do you like it?” He asked nervously, rocking back and forth on his heels.

Tears began streaming down her cheeks. “Gee, I love it! Oh it’s so wonderful! When did you have time to do this? I thought you and the guys were working on the album!”

Gerard grinned cheekily and wrapped his arms around her. “They came over to help right after you left. We did the best we could. Jamia came in to help shop for the furniture. Christa got the stuffed animals and the curtains. Alicia got the mobile and had her friend paint the solar system.” He explained, nuzzling her neck.

“It’s so beautiful. She’s going to love it.” Meredith whispered, her eyes scanning the room again.

“There you go again, saying she. Don’t get my hopes up.” He laughed, though his voice was humorless.

Meredith turned around, her hands flying to Gerard’s face, holding his chin in her hands so he could look into her eyes. “You listen to me, Gerard Arthur Way, I know we’re going to have a baby girl now. And her name is going to be Elena Way, do you hear me?” She said, her voice strong.

Gerard put his mouth to hers to thank his beautiful bride-to-be. For the first time in years, he was thankful for God. He had brought her into his life, and now Meredith was bringing their baby girl into his.

“You bitches!” Meredith laughed, clinking her Coke with Alicia, Jamia, and Christa’s wineglasses. They were in Alicia and Mikey’s luxurious apartment, crowded around the island while the guys got together in the family room.

Christa laughed and leaned over to hug Meredith. “So what did you think of the baby’s room?” She asked giddily, taking a small sip of her Merlot.

Meredith smiled at her favorite girlfriends. “It was wonderful. The stuffed animals were great, Christa. Thanks so much, to all of you.” She added, looking at each of them with thanks.

Alicia rolled her heavily lined eyes and gulped down her wine. “Don’t get sappy on us, Mare! Come on, let’s go have fun. So tell me, did you like the mobile? Hand sewn by one of the most famous sewers in the U.S.!” She laughed, throwing an arm around Meredith’s shoulder.

Jamia laughed. “It was by your mother!” She cackled, linking arms with Christa and Meredith.

All of the guys were there except for Bob and his mystery date. But for the first time, Meredith didn’t feel nervous or anxious at all about the late arrival of Bob. She felt calm and at ease, happy. And she liked feeling like that. She was there to have fun and enjoy their extended family.

They were sitting on the couch with chips and salsa watching an 80’s movie when the doorbell buzzed. Mikey got up from the loveseat he was sitting on with Alicia and unlocked their steel door.

And in walked Bob.

With a very attractive, young woman who was holding his hand.

“Hey!” The guys shouted, their arms wide open and grins slapped onto their faces.

Alicia, Jamia, and Christa all narrowed their eyes at the girl, scrutinizing everything from an out of place hair to her polished heels.

Meredith had such faithful friends.

“Guys, this is Amelia. She’s my new neighbor.” Bob said awkwardly, gesturing to all his friends. “This is Mikey. Over there is Alicia, Jamia, Frankie, Gerard, Meredith, Christa, and Ray.” He said, his eyes looking at everyone but Meredith.

Alicia’s eyes met Meredith’s, and they seemed to ask if she was alright.

No, of course she wasn’t.

And she was frustrated for feeling … anger? Resentment? Jealousy …? But why, and how? They had slept once, completely drunk. But god dammit, this could be his kid as well, although she had been growing confident that the baby was Gerard’s. But seeing Bob made things difficult. If this was going to be baby, she didn’t want her child around his new neighbor.

She tried to pay attention to something else, like Gerard’s sudden interest in the basketball game on TV with Ray, who was commenting on who the players were. Gerard didn’t like basketball, she knew that. She knew he didn’t really care for any sports besides croquet after their music video when Frankie had tried to teach them. And then she focused on Alicia’s nose ring. She wondered if Alicia’s piercing hurt as bad as hers did. Although, Alicia had probably had it professionally done while Meredith’s older sister had shoved one of their mother’s sewing needles through her nostril. And then her eyes traveled to Christa and Ray, cuddling out of the corner of her eye. Christa and Ray were such a good match for each other. Christa was a good person too, and Ray completely deserved her.

“Um, excuse me. Do I know you from somewhere? You look so familiar.”

Meredith snapped out of her thoughts, her eyes looking into Bob’s date’s hazel ones. “No.” She said very curtly.

Amelia looked timid, taken aback. “Oh. Sorry, you just look really familiar for some reason.” She explained quietly.

Behind her, Bob’s eyes narrowed to look at Meredith. “I just have one of those faces, I guess.” Meredith answered feebly, shrugging her shoulders once.

Christa, who was trying to be the most friendly to the new girl, smiled at her. “Meredith and Gerard are going to be having a baby.” She said brightly.

“Oh, that must be exciting. You look very skinny for being pregnant. How far along are you, if you don’t mind me asking.” Amelia asked curiously, her smile friendly.

Bob gritted his teeth, his fist opening and closing behind her date’s shoulders no the back of the loveseat they were sitting on.

Immediately, Gerard’s arm went around Meredith’s at the mention of the baby. “She’s just about three months pregnant.” He smiled, a goofy look on his face.

“That’s good. Congratulations.” Amelia smiled, her face bright and happy.

All night Meredith resisted the urge to scream at the girl.

“Come on, Mare, I’ll help you to the doctor’s.” Jamia offered, holding out her arm to help Meredith out of her Chevy SUV. “So you excited? Second doctor’s visit.” She smiled, walking alongside her friend as they headed towards the glass doors to the office.

Gerard had promised to make every doctor’s appointments but at the last minute he had gotten called into a meeting about his comic book. Though Meredith understood and told him she’d be fine, Jamia called and offered to take her because she was so eager to see her future niece or nephew. He had also apologized so many times you’d think he was on repeat.

When they got inside Meredith was immediately called in and Dr. Wyatt came in with a folder under her arm. “Hello Meredith how are you doing today? And who is this?” She asked pleasantly, shaking hands with Jamia.

“Jamia, she’s sort of like a sister-in-law.” Meredith smiled, laying against the reclined chair. “So what are we doing today?” She asked curiously.

“Well I’m just going to run a few tests and do another ultrasound. Sound good?” Dr. Wyatt asked, the lines around her mouth forming.

“Sure.”

The doctor took a sample of her blood and handed it to one of the nurses. They began the ultrasound when Dr. Wyatt gasped. “Oh my … how could I have missed that.” She murmured.

Both Jamia and Meredith looked at each other with worried eyes. What was wrong? “What’s wrong with my baby?” She gasped, a terrible feeling closing around her. A lump formed in her throat as she thought of the worse.
