Part Thirty
FAST FORWARD A COUPLE OF WEEKS...
Patrick's POV
It was the week of the due date. We were technically supposed to be at the hospital sometime this week, but Kel felt fine, so we decided to hold off on it for a few more days. I was on pins and needles all the time now. I was so worried I wasn't going to be there for Kel when the babies started to come, I had gotten to the point that I wouldn't leave her side. Pete, Farrah, Andy, and Joe had all decided to come over and stay for the week so that way they could help out if need be. Keliah spent a lot of time with Farrah, I'm sure discussing girl stuff that none of us guys wanted to hear. Makes me shudder every time I think of it.
The guys have helped me from not having panic attacks when Kel gets up to do something or get something from a shelf. They've made it incredibly clear that she is still a functioning human being and she is capable of doing it herself. And I know that. I'm just...protective. That's all. I don't want anything to happen to her or those kids. They're my life now. Nothing can happen to them. Most of us were just waiting for Kel's water to break, but today, we'd decided to relax and just talk for awhile. We were all seated in the living room, Andy and Pete had their phones out, texting away, Joe was playing stuff on his guitar and Kel was sitting next to me, my arm around her shoulders.
"So, Joe, what was that guitar riff thing you were working on?"
"It was nothing...it was just this." Joe had brought over his guitar, even though I have practically every instrument imaginable in this house, including the ukulele now because of the blue one I had given Kel. He played a small riff and it sounded pretty good. Kel smiled at him. "I like it!" she said, moving a strand of her auburn hair behind her ears. "I think it sounds awesome, especially for it being such a short riff. It's really good. Can I add something to it, though?"
"Sure, anything." Joe said.
"After that last note that you play, play an...E minor chord after it and move everything up an octave. See how that sounds."
Joe shrugged and nodded. He played it and it sounded LOADS better.
"Well, well, well. Looks like Patrick married his composing equal as well." Andy said, grinning at Kel.
I laughed and agreed. "I guess so. That sounded really really good, Kel."
She simply shrugged and jokingly said. "Oh, I try. Hon, I'm going to get up and get a water bottle. I'll be right back."
She stood up and I watched her carefully. The protectiveness in my mind soon faded away as I walked her walk. She may have been pregnant, but her hips were AMAZING. And I swear, her bra size must have gone up a few letters. That girl went from a C cup to an E cup within a few months. She looked even more incredible than I thought possible. I loved every inch of her still, and the changes in her body were no exception. I quickly turned back to Joe, and discussed his riff some more, grabbing a notepad to write it down. "So, after that E minor chord then, do what Kel told you to there, and then add maybe a...C minor or a B minor."
He strummed some more continuing the riff. "Alright, so, E minor, C minor...what if I alternated between the C and the-"
Joe was interrupted by Keliah's voice coming from the kitchen. Oh god no, I thought.
"Uh, sweetie? I...I think my w-water just broke."
Oh sweet Jesus, I thought to myself. I threw down my notebook and everyone else followed me to the kitchen. Sure enough, it had definitely broke.
---------------
We all piled quickly into Pete's van so everyone could come to the hospital with us, I was driving and Kel was in the front seat. Farrah was sat directly behind her and held her hand as contractions started. I stepped on the gas to get us to the hospital as soon as possible.
"Oh my GOD these hurt worse than I thought they would..." she said, sounding incredibly strained.
"Just take deep breaths." Farrah told her. "That should do something to relax you."
Kel started breathing deeply but after a couple of breaths she screamed in agony. I bit my lip, trying my hardest not to get distracted from the road. I was probably already speeding, but I really didn't care. All I could focus on was getting to the hospital. Pete started talking from the back seat. "I'm closest to the door, so when we get there, I'll sprint inside and get the nurses so we can get her into a room."
Farrah nodded. "Good idea. With the way this is going, I don't think she's going to be able to walk in-"
She was interrupted by another scream from Kel. "This REALLY FUCKING HURTS." she cried out. Joe smirked for a second, but it was soon wiped away as I speeded into the hospital parking lot, quickly pulling up next to the doorway. I turned the car off as Pete raced inside and I leaned over to hold onto Kel's hand. "It's all gonna be ok. I promise it will."
She bit her lip, trying to withhold a scream, and nodded, a few tears rolling down her face. It took every ounce of self control in me to try not to yell at any doctor or nurse and tell them to stop the pain she was in, but I knew this was just going to happen. Pete came out, followed by a bunch of nurses holding onto a wheelchair. We got Kel out of the van, into the chair and we all ran with the nurses to the maternity wing so she could deliver the baby. I held onto her hand. "Do you want me in there with you?"
She shook her head no. "No, no. I can handle this. I swear-" she winced in agony again. I asked again. "Are you sure you don't want me in there?"
Hormones took over. "YES. I'm SURE."
"Okay, okay." I said calmly, knowing not to take it personally. If I was in her position, I'd be swearing worse than a sailor and kicking everyone in sight. I admired her self-control. I felt her hand slip away from mine as they pulled her into her room. People were already ready for her as she came in. Dr. Bennie wasn't kidding when she said they'd be ready to go. I looked through the window, watching her scream. I couldn't hear anything, but I knew she was screaming. Suddenly, a nurse came out to talk to me. "She's asking for you now. Mood swings are normal." she said, grinning a little at my confusion. I ran inside after her taking Kel's hand again. I was basically worthless, other than just holding her hand tightly as she started. It went on for hours, and finally the first baby was showing.
I fainted.
----------------
Apparently I was put into a chair by Kel's hospital bed after I had fainted. I don't remember much after seeing the first kid coming out. Kel was sound asleep, as beautiful as ever. She was probably so tired, she could sleep for days. I quietly got up from the chair as I seen Dr. Bennie outside the window of the room. I opened and shut the door as quiet as I could, walking out of the room. I turned to her.
"Hi, Doc. What's up?"
"Well, I'm here to check up on Kel after she wakes up. I've been letting her sleep for awhile. She was in labor for at least 9 to 10 hours."
"You mean I passed out for that long?"
"That's not uncommon. You're not the first guy to pass out." she joked. "I can guarantee you that. Both of your babies are on the left end of the maternity wing, if you'd like to go see them. I believe your friends are already out by there waiting for you."
"Thank you. Very very much, doctor. You've been fantastic to us both. Take good care of Kel, okay?"
"I plan to. Congratulations again, Mr. Stump." she said with a smile and went back to her clipboard.
I quickly walked down to the left end of the wing and seen Farrah and the guys pointing through the little window. Farrah seen me first and waved. "LOOK AT THEM! They're so CUTE!" she said, pointing through the window. All the guys patted me on the back as I peered through the glass to see a little boy and a little girl, one in blue, one in pink, with "Stump" written on their little cribs. I felt my eyes well up and I smiled, looking at them both.
"They're amazing." I said quietly, watching them wiggle and squirm.
Andy put a hand on my shoulder. "Congrats, man. You're finally a father."
Pete looked through the glass at them and sighed. "They're almost too cute for me to mess with them. They're so...adorable and innocent."
"You're a lucky dude, Trick." Joe said, patting me on the back.
Farrah just outright hugged me. Unlike the first time she hugged me, when I told her I was going to ask Kel to marry me, I hugged back this time. She held onto me tight and said, "They're absolutely adorable, Trick. You're a lucky man." I smiled at her as she pulled away and looked back through the glass at them. I moved closer to the glass and watched them move around. They wiggled a bit like worms. I smiled at the thought of it. A nurse came up behind me and asked, "You're Mr. Stump, correct?"
"Yes, I am."
"Well, I am informed that you're able to take your babies into Mrs. Stump's room. Apparently, she is up, feeling well and is awake now. So you can go in and take them anytime."
I opened the door to the babies and me and Farrah made our way through the dozens of babies all lying in their cribs to the twins. I gently picked up Max. As I picked him up, he eyes opened wide, looking right into mine. He had Kel's big dark brown eyes. The kind that could melt the heart of anyone in their path. I watched as I put my finger to his stomach, rubbing his little tiny tummy, and he smiled a little. His little hand reached out and grabbed my finger. I almost lost it there. I laughed through a tear, and held onto Max close to my chest. I watched closely as Farrah picked up Lily, smiling down on her as she did so. The guys watched us from the window as we soon walked out with the twins. Pete was absolutely fascinated with Lily, putting his finger out for her to grab onto it. "Hi, Lily Ann, I'm...well
....technically...I'm Pete. But you can call me Uncle Pete." he smiled.
We finally got to the room where Kel was, and she smiled widely as she saw me walk in with everyone. "Oh, Patrick, I've missed you..." I smiled at her and turned back down to Max. "Look, Max, it's mommy!"
She held out her arms and I gently set Max in them. Farrah came over and gave her Lily as well. She held onto them both in each arm, smiling through tears.
"They're beautiful, Patrick."
"Just like their mother." I replied back.
Pete gasped and pulled out his camera. "Total Kodak moment, people."
He set the camera onto a timer and we all stood around the bed, Kel smiling with both babies, and the camera clicked. "Awesome. Now. Back to how fuc-I mean, how freaking amazing these kids are."
Farrah gently punched Pete in the shoulder. "Look at you, censoring yourself around children. I'm so proud of you!"
Pete blushed and looked down at his shoes.
Lily opened her eyes next, after Kel had gently nuzzled her nose up against her tiny nose. "Oh, Trick, look. She's definitely got your eyes."
I moved to see her more clearly and I was taken aback by how green her eyes were. They were like mini emeralds. "She's got gorgeous eyes."
"Just like her father." Kel smirked at me.
Joe and Andy stood aside and Andy spoke up nervously. "C-can I hold onto Max?"
Kel nodded and Andy carefully took Maxwell into his arms. "Wow. They're so...little."
Joe asked to hold Lily and he picked her up as well. Kel now sat there watching them both like a hawk, making sure nothing happened to them. "She's so beautiful." Joe whispered, holding out his finger to Lily.
Pete coughed. "And I am now the only one who hasn't gotten to hold onto to one of them." he whined.
Andy held out Max to him. "Here. Be VERY CAREFUL."
Pete gingerly grabbed Max and looked down on him. "Look at you. You're totally going to be a hit with the ladies, aren't ya, Max?"
I rolled my eyes at him. Joe nodded and added nervously, "I'll admit, Lily is probably going to be a hit with the guys as well...if you don't mind me saying. Those eyes of hers could kill."
Another nurse came in, and handed us three pieces of paper. "Here's the birth certificate for both twins. They were born October 4th, Monday, Lily at 6:23, Maxwell at 6:28. Does that sound right?" Kel nodded.
"Perfect."
"And the other piece of paper is your ticket out of here. The doctor has already checked up on you, all tests were fine, so you are welcome to head home with your twins anytime you please."
The guys cheered and clapped, and the nurse gave them weird looks which made them shut up quickly and stare down at their shoes.
"Anyways, I hope you have a fabulous rest of the day, and congratulations on the absolutely ADORABLE twins." With that, the nurse walked out of the room, and Kel yawned. "Yeah, we should probably get home. I'm hungry. And I'm sure Max and Lily want to sleep. They're falling asleep in everyone's arms."
"I'm definitely hungry." Pete said, putting a hand over his stomach. Kel shook her head and laughed at him. I pulled the curtain around the bed so Kel could get dressed into her normal clothes again, much to the guys' dismay. She was done soon and after a lot of coaxing and assurance, she reluctantly sat down in the wheelchair.
I grabbed the papers the nurse gave us and the guys followed. Farrah held onto Max, Kel held onto Lily, and I pushed Kel in the wheelchair. We got to the front door where the van was still parked and Kel got up perfectly fine and sat down in the car. We all piled into the van again, smiles on our faces, headed back home.
----------------
Pete, Joe, Andy and Farrah admired the twins for almost another hour or so before they all said farewell and left.
I held onto Max who was already asleep in my arms while Kel held onto Lily, slowing making her fall asleep by singing softly to her. We walked into the nursery and set them both down in their respective beds, watching them as they slept.
I whispered to Kel, "If they're twins, shouldn't they look the same?"
She shook her head. "Nope. Apparently almost all boy/girl twins are fraternal. So they won't look like typical twins. They'll just look like any other siblings."
I nodded and watched them as they moved their little arms, sleeping soundly. Kel opened her eyes wide and whispered, "I almost forgot. Watch this." she grabbed a remote from the room and led me back into the living room. I was reluctant to leave them alone in their room but Kel told me not to worry. She stood in front of the television and used the remote she grabbed in nursery. The screen soon popped up with a camera view of the twins, undisturbed.
"See? Now we can keep an eye on them without disturbing them. Pete told me they installed it, but I was too tired to care when they told me the first time."
I smiled, watching the screen and I gently shook my head.
"That is absolutely insane. We're parents."
"Yes, we are, aren't we?"
"Indeed." I laughed, kissing her deeply. It had been so long since we'd kissed like that, it was a whole new shock down my spine when our lips touched. I liked the feeling, moving my hands to her neck, carefully forcing my lips harder onto hers. The taste of her lips had almost been forgotten, and I relished every taste I could get. Our tongues battled in each other's mouths, but the passion in my veins allowed my tongue to win. Her hands moved, stroking the sides of my face, intertwining her fingers in my hair. She soon pulled back, biting her lip and closing her eyes.
"God, you are amazing."
"I don't really believe the word amazing should be used for me today. You just went through 8-9 months worth of carrying not one, but TWO children, and you had to give birth to them earlier than you expected. I believe that would qualify you as INCREDIBLE."
"Aw. You're so sweet. But, of course, you did the work to get them in my stomach in the first place..." she giggled.
"Okay, so it was a team effort." I laughed, running my hands through her hair. I don't know if it was the glow of motherhood again, but her hair seemed even brighter than normal. The auburn in it shined brightly. She opened her eyes to look deep into mine and I stopped and stared. Her eyes glistened from the lights in the living room, showing off every glimmer of brown in her eyes.
"You are beautiful. Even more so than when we met, Kel."
"I haven't changed much." she said shrugging.
"Oh, to the contrary. Your body is...for lack of a better word, your body is BANGIN'."
She blushed and looked down at her shoes. "Yay for pregnancy then, I guess." she joked. I smiled and looked back at the screen, watching the twins sleeping soundly, and I turned back to Kel.
"Well...I suppose we should go to sleep. You've been through a lot today."
She clung to my shoulders as we both turned off the TV in the living room to the baby monitor, headed to the bedroom and turned on the TV in our bedroom to watch the twins. She quickly got into her pajamas, and I could tell she was happy that she could wear some of her old clothes again. She clambered into bed next to me and pressed her body up against mine. "I missed this." she whispered.
"Me too." I said, calmly stroking her hair.
"But, now we have twins to make our lives even more exciting..." she said sleepily, closing her eyes to yawn.
"Our two little bundles of joy."
-------------------
3 A.M THE SAME NIGHT.
I woke up with a start to what looked like Max crying. Kel stirred next to me. "I'll take care of it..." she mumbled, getting out of bed.
And so the sleepless nights begin.

3 A.M THE SAME NIGHT.
I woke up with a start to what looked like Max crying. Kel stirred next to me. "I'll take care of it..." she mumbled, getting out of bed.
And so the sleepless nights begin.
