As night falls, Frank and I are still waiting.
During the hours that have passed, Frank and I moved Gerard out of the house and back to the cave with the bags he packed. We didn’t say much at all. The both of us were too worried about Gee. I haven’t slept. Neither has Frank. We’re both just sitting and waiting. I let a few tears fall silently down my face as I stare at my brother.
“We weren’t quick enough,” I whisper in a broken voice to Frank, “I could have gone in sooner and avoided the whole thing, but I just stayed there like a fucking coward.”
Frank whispers, “Mikes-”
“No. Don’t try and convince me otherwise. I was a coward, and we were too late. Now he’s dead,” I hiss, my voice breaking on the last word as I start crying my heart out.
Frank pulls me into his arms and kisses my temple over and over again, muttering; ‘He’s not dead. He’s okay. None of this is your fault. I love you.’
I don’t believe him. I don’t deserve him. I don’t believe Gerard is okay. He’s been motionless for too long.
These thoughts only make me cry harder.
I cling onto Frank like he’s my only lifeline because, right now, he is. I bring my face level to his and kiss him, despite my tears, to thank him. Gradually, I allow the kiss to get deeper.
“Thank you for loving me,” I whimper against his lips, “I love you. I love you so fucking much. I don’t deserve you.”
“I love you too, baby,” Frank whispers back, “Don’t say that. You deserve everything. I’ll be yours. Forever.”
Things continue like this for a while. I kiss him to deal with my concern for Gerard while we reassure each other of our love between kisses.
But we stop when we hear a groan.
I immediately pull away from Frank and we both kneel on either side of my brother.
“Gee?” I croak, “Wake up, bro. Please.”
“Mmm,” Gerard moans, his eyelids fluttering open, “M-Mikey?”
My tears suddenly change to tears of happiness, “Yeah, Gee. It’s me.”
He goes to move, but frowns and shuts his eyes again. I know from experience that he must be dizzy. I hook an arm around his shoulders and help him sit up, waiting for him to come to terms with everything. I know he will be more than pleased to know that all our problems are behind us. He blinks a few times and looks around. His eyes fall on me and he suddenly smiles.
“I’m alive,” He whispers.
I nod my head, grinning back, “You’re alive.”
Gerard suddenly barks out a happy laugh and throws his arms around me. I don’t hesitate in hugging him back just as tightly.
“I was so scared I was gonna lose you,” I tell him.
“Well, you didn’t,” he replies, hugging me tighter, “I’m still here.”
“Yeah,” I laugh, “Stubborn motherfucker.”
Eventually, we do pull apart.
“How are you feeling?” I ask him.
“Totally fucking weird,” Gerard replies.
“You’ll feel that way for a while, but you’ll get used to it,” Frank says.
“Hold on,” Gerard says, frowning, “What happen after dad, uh…did that thing. I mean, the last thing I remember is falling over.”
“Oh, uh,” I mumble, “Well, I fixed up your neck and Frank changed you.”
Gerard feels around his throat, “There isn’t even a scar,” he says, sounding awed.
“Yeah, well, I just said I fixed it,” I smiled, “Plus, for some reason becoming a vampire, like, gets rid of all your scars.”
“Wicked,” Gerard smiles, “So, uh, what happened to dad?”
“I knocked him out,” Frank says, proudly with a smirk.
Gerard laughs, “Well done.”
“Thank you very much,” Frank laughs back.
“So,” Gerard says, looking at both of us, “It really happened? It’s all real?”
“Yup,” Frank smirks, “You, sir, are officially a vampire.”
“Check out your fangs,” I tell him excitedly.
Gerard uncertainly opens his mouth and runs his fingers over the sharp, white fangs that are now in his mouth. His smile grows even wider, if possible, “Holy shit! This is so fucking awesome!”
“I know, right?!” I reply.
Frank just laughs and rolls hi eyes, “You guys are so alike. It’s creepy.”
“Well,” I say, standing up, “Remember that you can only make out with me. Not him.”
Frank just stares at me with wide eyes, and mine soon match his as I realize what I just said.
“Uh,” Gerard says, “Are you meaning to say that you’ve been making out with each other?”
“Oh, fuck,” Frank mutters, slapping a hand to his forehead.
“Woah. I don’t have a problem with it or anything,” Gerard explains awkwardly.
“No, we know,” I cut in, “I guess we were just planning to tell you in a less awkward way.”
“Well done,” Gerard says, smirking at my embarrassment.
“Shut up,” I mutter, “Just say you’re okay with it, and we’ll leave it at that.”
“Well, to be honest, I kinda already knew,” Gerard explains, standing up and brushing the dirt off his pants.
“You did?” Frank asks.
“Yeah, I mean, have you guys seen the way you look at each other?” Gerard says, laughing, in a friendly way, “It’s more than obvious. Besides, you did kinda latch onto each other the other day when you kidnapped me.”
“We didn’t kidnap you,” I say with a roll of my eyes.
“Whatever,” Gerard retorts, “My point is, you’re obviously nuts over each other. So, yeah…Just keep the whole making out thing to a minimum-”
“Got it, Gee!” I cringe.
“-When I’m…in your presence.”
An awkward silence falls over us.
“Well,” Frank suddenly pipes up, breaking it, “Shall we get going then?”
“Like, now?” Gerard asks.
“Yeah…”
“Yeah, okay,” Gerard mutters, “Just…woah. Everything changed so quickly. How long is gonna take for me to get used to this whole vampire thing?”
“Not to long,” I explain, “I’m basically used to it, already. Just keep your sanity in check when there are people around.”
“What’s that supposed to mean?” Gerard asks, frowning.
“You’ll soon find out,” I mutter and look at Frank who looks pleasantly amused at Gerard’s naivety.
After a few more minutes of bickering and weird remarks, we have all our things packed. Gerard won’t stop questioning the reality of the situation. I guess, I don’t blame him. That none of this seems real. I seem to question it a lot too. But maybe I like it better this way. I like losing my mind, falling in love and spending forever with the two people I love most.
“Everyone ready?” I ask.
Frank and Gerard both smile and nod at me.
“Any idea where we’re gonna go?” Gerard asks.
“We can go wherever the fuck we want,” Frank grins, “We have all the time in the world.”
Gerard smiles just a widely back at Frank, “This is the coolest day of my…not life?”
“What?” I ask.
“I dunno. We’re dead, right? So, like…Oh! I’ve got it. It’s the best day of my afterlife!”
I chuckle silently and shake my head at Gerard, “And people say little brothers are the dumb ones.”
“Shut up, wheeze,” Gerard smirks.
“Well,” I breathe, “Let’s go.”
And we do.
We leave behind everything and everyone that ever hurt us. We leave behind a place filled with too horrible memories. We leave behind our old lives, and start new ones. With each other.
As for reality? Well, it’s far gone now. And it’s never coming back. But I don’t care.
As long as I have Frank and Gerard, the whole world can kiss my ass.
And that’s how it’s gonna be. Forever.
