“So….what are your killjoy names? I mean you never told us.” I asked after we’d reached the diner that night.

We were all sitting around while Frank tried to tune the radio to Dr. DeathDefying’s station. The rest of us were sitting on the king sized bed that had become mine and Candy’s. It took up most of the small room we shared with Ray and Nicki.

“Well Nicki is Boom, Frankie is Fun Ghoul, Mikes is Kobra Kid, I’m Jet Star and Gee is Party Poison.” Ray said pointing to each of us.

“Nice.” Candy replied but I was sitting in shock.

“Y-You’re the killjoys?” I asked.

“Uh…yeah…so are you.” Frank said giving me a weird look.

“No! I mean you’re the FABULOUS Killjoys! The ones that everyone talks about!” I replied.

“Oh…uh…yeah I guess.” Gerard said and took a bite out of his ‘Power Pup’.

“And you didn’t tell me?!? Holy shit! I leave you guys for 3 years and I’m completely bumped out of the loop!” I replied.

“Well it didn’t occur to us to announce ourselves you know? To us…we’re just normal.” Mikey said.

I shrugged. I guess that made some sense.

“Well this isn’t working. I guess we’re not gonna hear anything tonight.” Frank said shutting the radio off and sitting back on Ray’s bed.

“Well then lets call it a night. Who’s turn is it to go put up the guards?” Ray asked with a yawn.

“Mine. Cass you wanna help?” Gerard asked turning to me.

“What do I have to do?”

“Nothing it just pushing a button. C’mon it’s easy.” he said and handed me the red gun I always carried.

I tucked it in the back of my jeans and pulled on my Converse. We walked out and Gerard turned on a flash light.

“Okay what you do is you hit this button right here and put it on the ground then a few feet later put another one.” he said and from a bag he’d picked up on our way out the door pulled out a small silvery cube.

I nodded and sat down the first cube before walking a ways and placing another one while Gerard followed holding the bag.

“So what have you been doing for the past three years?” he asked.

“Well after I left I sold Ray’s car, bought my bike, went into the zones, met up with Candy and ever since we’ve been wandering around hoping to run into the Fabulous Killjoys.” I replied.

He nodded, “God I can’t believe how much you’ve changed though.”

“I haven’t changed that much. I just dyed my hair.” I replied.

“I don’t mean physically. You’ve grown up a lot. You act so much older than you are.” he replied.

“That tends to happen when you see one of your best friends die and then proceed to think that rest of your friends and your family are dead for 3 years.” I said.

“You’re talking about Bob aren’t you? You saw him die?”

I nodded, “He jumped in between a Drac and me. He told me to get out of town and died holding my hand.”

“I’m so sorry you had to see that Cass.” he said and pulled me toward him.

Suddenly tears began to fall from my eyes and onto the black tank top he wore. However I couldn’t help but laugh.

“Are you laughing while you’re crying?” Gerard asked.

“Yeah. I just realized that I haven’t cried since that night and now I’ve cried twice in two days.”

He laughed, “Well cut it with the tears kid. You’ve got us again.”

He put a finger under my chin and lifted my face to his, wiping the tears from my cheeks. That’s when our eyes locked. His face was close enough to mine that I could feel his breath on my lips and see each individual eyelash that framed those beautiful eyes.

My brain began to spin as by some sort of magnetic thing began to happen and our faces got closer and closer. Suddenly though there was a ‘crack’ of some sort and we both jumped. I had my gun out in an instant as did he, our backs pressed together, our breath bated. I swung the beam of the flashlight around us before finally resting on a prairie dog.

The both of us let out a sigh of relief and re-holstered our weapons. I shook my head and wiped my brow before moving on and putting out more guards like nothing had happened, like Gerard and I hadn’t been about to kiss. Like I said before it could NOT happen. End. Of. Story.

I finished quickly before hurrying inside and away from Gerard. I quickly told everyone that I was going to bed and bid them goodnight before heading to my room.

I changed out of my clothes and into a pair yellow girl boxers with black bats on them and a black tank top before crawling under the thin blanket that covered the mattress. I heard someone coming in the room and quickly turned over toward the wall and concentrated on making my breathing slow and even.

“Angel I know you’re not asleep.” Candy said.

“How?” I asked turning over.

“Because you snore.” she replied as she started changing into her own pajamas; a green cami and blue and green plaid shorts.

I nodded, “Well I’m trying to go to sleep so….good night.” I said and laid back down.

“Yeah right. Now what the hell is wrong with you?” she asked.

“Fine…I almost kissed Gerard.” said with a sigh.

“Really? Well why didn’t you?” she asked.

“Because! He’s my brother’s best friend! So what if I’ve liked him since I was fifteen fucking years old? I can’t date him!” I replied.

“So what if he’s your brother’s friend? What difference does that make?” she asked.

“Because….it’s happened before.” I replied.

“Oh. What happened?” Candy asked laying down beside me on the bed.

“It was his friend Matt. I was 16 and Matt was 26, we dated for 7 months before we had a huge fight and Matt started calling me all sorts of horrible things. Next thing you know Ray and Bob beat the fuck outta him and end up spending the night in jail. I don’t want to have to go through that shit again.” I replied.

Candy nodded, “How do you know that things are going to be like that again? Maybe Matt was just a jackass.” she replied.

“I just don’t want it to. So I’m going to stay far away from him. And that’s all I can do.” I said and with that turned back over toward the wall.

“Whatever. Deny all you want hon. You’re gonna have to deal with it sooner or later.” Candy replied and turned out the light.

Soon Candy’s slow and even breathing could be heard beside me. However I couldn’t sleep, the thought of Gerard’s lips so close to mine haunting the recesses of my mind. Sometime later Ray carried in Nicki who was sleeping soundly. He put her in her bed before walking over to Candy and I’s bed.

I faked being asleep once again and unlike Candy, Ray never had been good a knowing when I was faking something like sleeping or crying. My fake tears had gotten me out of many a situation with him when I was little. Like when I’d broken all the strings on Ray’s prized guitar when I was 8.

Ray pulled my blanket up around me more, tucking it around me. He brushed the curls that had fallen in my eyes back behind my ear and kissed my forehead gently.

“I’m so glad that I found you Cassie. I love you.” he whispered before walking over to his bed, kicking off his boots and almost instantly falling asleep.

I smiled as I thought back to when we’d been kids. Our Dad had left us when I was three and our mom had taken to working nights to support us. That had meant that I had been left in the charge of Alexandria and Ray.

Alexandria had been quite the wild one in her teenage years (with Nicki being the result and cure) and hadn’t been home much before she moved out. Ray had taken on the dad roll for me and had pretty much raised me when Mom wasn’t around. He’d never complained either.

When I was 16 and mom and I had gotten in a huge blow out over me getting my nose pierced he’d let me move in with him. When I was a kid he’d let me sleep in his bed when I had a nightmare or there was a storm. Ray had truly been my hero when I was little and I was so glad that I’d found him. He made everything better and soon I was able to fall asleep.

**************

‘BEEP! BEEP! BEEP!’

I woke to the sound of really loud alarms going off. I instantly knew what they were and was out of bed in an instant. Candy was already up and handing me my gun. I grabbed it, checked the ammo to make sure I had enough before stuffing my feet in my Converse and running outside on Candy’s heels, Ray on mine.

When we got outside we saw Gerard, Mikey and Frank standing with their guns poised at the dense darkness that surrounded us. They weren’t dressed much more than Candy and I were. Gerard was in a pair of pajama pants and a matching t-shirt, Mikey in a wife beater and boxers and Frank in just his boxer briefs. Only Ray, who’d fallen asleep fully clothed wore more than one layer of clothing.

The only sound that filled the night was that of our breathing and crickets. Our backs were to each other, guns raised. Suddenly there was a sound right in front of the diner and we all swung around guns pointing at the sound.

Slowly a figure began to come out of the darkness. It took a moment but slowly the figure came closer and a few moments later we saw that it was girl about Candy and I’s age. However we weren’t stupid enough to lower our guns.

“Whoa!” the girl said stopping about 10 feet away when she saw 6 guns trained on her.

“What do you want?” I asked.

“My car…I sort of….crashed it a few miles back. I’ve just been looking for a place to hide out tonight until I can fix it tomorrow morning.” she replied, her hand held up in defense.

“What do you guys think? Woman’s intuition beats guy’s every time.” Mikey whispered to Candy and I.

Candy and I exchanged silent looks. Since we’d been running together we’d become almost like sisters. We’d been in tougher situations than most could imagine and had had to rely on each other silently most of the time.

Right now we were both agreeing that this chick didn’t seem shady. We both nodded and lowered out guns carefully. A second later the guys did it too.

She let out a breath, “Thank you.”

“Welcome. I’m Party Poison. This is my brother Kobra Kid, our friends Fun Ghoul, Jet Star, his younger sister Anarchy Angel and her friend Cyanide Candy.” Gerard said.

“Crash Crazy.” she replied walking forward with a smile.

Crash Crazy was about my height with red hair and piercing blue eyes. I saw when she came closer that she was limping and had a gash in her forehead. She wore a pink top and a pair of now stained white jeans with her pink mask hanging loosely around her neck.

“C’mon and lets get inside. It’s not safe out here this late.” Frank said and we headed back inside.

“We’d better get you fixed up.” Gerard said and walked over and pulled a First Aid box from a cabinet.

He opened the box and pulled out band-aids, gauze, an ACE bandage. He sat down on the floor and pulled her food toward him and pulled off her pink Converse.

“You can call me Gerard by the way. Kobra is Mikey, Ghoul is Frank, Jet Star is Ray, Angel is Cassie, Candy is Lissa and Boom is Nicki.” Gerard said as he examined her foot carefully.

“I’m Jayden.” she replied with a smile and a flip of her hair.

“That’s a nice name.” he said running his pail fingers over her ankle.

Suddenly she began to laugh, “That tickles.”

“Oh it does, does it?” Gerard asked and ran his finger over the same spot again making her laugh.

“You’re very good with your hands.” she said with a flutter of her eyelashes a moment later.

Gerard had wrapped her foot with the ACE bandage and was now getting things set up to take care of the gash in her forehead. I was sitting across the room in one of the booths enjoying one of the few comforts the guys had managed to get out here. Coffee.

It didn’t surprise me that they had coffee. Gerard and Mikey had always loved their coffee and were like zombies without it. I had picked up the habit from them but after heading out into the Zones I hadn’t had a chance to drink it. I was grateful that it was yet another thing that had come back in my life.

However this morning it didn’t taste right, it was almost bitter on my tongue despite the excess of sugar that had been added.

“Angel! Angel?” Candy said waving her hand in front of my face and I snapped out of my own thoughts and looked to where she was sitting across from me.

“What?”

“You’re glaring.” she replied.

“Glaring? At what?” I asked.

“Gerard and Jayden.” she replied.

“I am not.” I replied.

“Uh-huh and you were watching them with a pissed off look on your face while you white knuckled the handle of your coffee cup just because.” she said with a smirk.

“Why would I be glaring?” I asked.

“Because she’s flirting with the guy that you like?”

I shook my head, “She’s not flirting.” I replied.

“Look again hon.” Candy said and shoved my head so that I was looking at them again.

Gerard was now patching Jayden’s head. She laughed and batted her eyes at him making a goofy smile spread across his face. Jayden was flirting. Suddenly it felt like someone had punched me in the gut. She was flirting and judging by the goofy/ smug look he had on his face he was flirting right back.

I guess I had known what she was doing it just hadn’t hit me until now. Or maybe it did subconsciously. I don’t know…all I knew was that one moment I was perfectly calm and now I wanted to walk across the room and punch her face in.
Memories of Gerard and I outside filled my head. Had we really been close to kissing? Or had it just been my imagination? I needed to get away from this.

“I’m going to go back to bed.” I said and slid my coffee cup away before standing up quickly.

“Wait Cassie…before you go to bed can Jayden borrow something to wear? She left all of her stuff back in her car and you’re closer to her size.” Gerard asked as I walked past.

I stopped dead in my tracks as my stomach churned. I bit back the comment that was brewing on my tongue.

“Sure. No problem.” I replied and walked to my room.

I had just pushed open my door when I heard footsteps behind me.

“Cassie?”

I turned and saw Mikey standing in the doorway.

“Yeah? What’s up?” I asked sorting through my clothes.

“Are you okay?” He replied.

“Of course. Why wouldn’t I be?”

“Because you looked like you wanted to eat Jayden’s soul.”

I shook my head, “Why would I look like that? There’s nothing up.” I replied.

“I don’t know…maybe because you used to have a major crush on Gee?” Mikey asked.

I froze, “H-How did you know that?” I asked.

“Hon it was written all over your face. Hell even Lyn knew. Gee’s the only one that never realized it which was too bad because…” Mikey replied but cut himself off.

“Because what?” I asked.

“Nothing. So do you still have that crush?” he asked with a smirk.

“No! No way! That was a long time ago. And don’t change the subject Michael James Way.” I replied.

“Uh-huh and Frankie’s six foot tall.” he said ignoring the final part.

“Are you not going to answer me?” I asked.

“Look Cassie Cat…just…don’t worry okay? Trust me.” Mikey said using my childhood nickname and pulling me into a hug.

“Fine…thanks Mikes.” I replied.

“No problem. Now give me the clothes for Jayden because I don’t want you murdering the poor girl.” He said.

I laughed and handed him the red plaid shorts and white Cami that I’d pulled from my bag. With another hug and a peck on the top of my head he left the room. Sighing I put my bag back where it was and climbed into bed.

Mikey’s unfinished question haunted my mind. Because what? With that final thought I fell asleep.
