I slowly opened my eyes and saw that I was in a room that I didn’t recognize lying on a bed. The first thought that ran though my mind was what the fuck happened when suddenly everything came rushing back. The five people in the kitchen of the diner. My brother and Frank and Mikey and Gerard! And the little girl! Could it be Nicki or Bandit?
Wait…could it really have been them? When everything first started, when I’d first escaped to the Zones and had become a Killjoy, I’d had dreams where I would wake up and thought that I’d see them but it wasn’t true. Could this time be anything different?
I was scared that it could be a dream but I had to find out. I needed to find out. Looking down I saw my boots sitting beside the bed so I grabbed them and stuffed my feet inside before walking out of the room.
The moment I passed through the door I heard voices talking quietly. When I stepped into the room though they stopped and all eyes turned to me. I could’ve cried. It was true. They were real. I saw Ray stand and make his way toward me but before he could even get half way I had grabbed him around the waist, my face buried in his chest.
“Cassie…oh my god.” he said and wrapped his arms around me.
We stood like that for a while just holding onto one another. When he finally let go I was hit around my midsection by a mass of curls.
“Nicki?” I asked looking down at her.
“Mhmm….I missed you Aunt Cassie.” she said and hugged me tighter.
“I missed you too baby girl.” I replied kissing the top of her head.
When Nicki finally let go the other guys all came up and hugged me. Frank was first, grabbing me and spinning me around before planting a kiss on my cheek and passing me to Mikey who hugged me tightly for a few seconds. Gerard was next and he pulled me close to him, hugging me almost as tight as Ray had.
“Where did you go Cass?” he asked in a low voice.
I don’t know where it came from but suddenly anger bubbled in my gut and before I could stop it I had shoved him away from me roughly.
“What’s wrong?” Gerard asked looking confused.
“Where did I go? WHERE DID I GO? WHERE THE FUCK DID YOU LOT GO?!?” I yelled.
“Do you know that I went back to the house? Do you know that I found blood all over the living room? I thought you all were dead! That building exploded! They said that pretty much everyone died! Three mother fucking years! Three and I haven’t heard a word from any of you!” I yelled the first tears I’d cried in 3 years falling from my eyes.
“What did you expect us to do? We looked everywhere for you and Bob! We went back to the house too! We found Mom dead in the living room and Nicki and Bandit hiding in the hall closet! We looked for you but didn’t find either of you! So don’t go around blaming us!” Ray replied.
“Well you didn’t look hard enough did you?” I spat and with that turned on my heel and marched out front.
I walked until I reached the Trans AM that was parked by our bikes and perched myself on the hood. I heard the door of the diner swing open and a moment later the car shifted as some one joined me. I didn’t have to turn my head to know who it was.
“I’m not going back in there right now Candy.” I said.
“Yeah you are. And you’re gonna do it and be happy.” She replied.
“No. I’m not. I went through three years of mourning for people that weren’t even dead. Right now I just need to be alone.” I sighed.
“Well at least you still have people.” Candy spat bitterly.
“Fuck…I’m sorry Candy. I forgot.” I replied.
Three years ago Candy’s entire family had been killed. Her mother and father, her little sister Casey and her dog Sam had been murdered by a troop of Dracs that had taken over her city shortly after they’d taken over mine. Candy had been at her friend’s house when the raid had started and by the time she’d gotten home there was nothing left but a pile of smoldering rubble in which her family’s charred bodies had later been pulled from. Like me Candy had just taken off and left.
“I’m glad you can. Now get your stupid ass in there and talk to them. If not I’ll make you.” she said wiping a few stray tears from her eyes.
I sighed, “Fine.” and slid from the hood and walked back inside.
All eyes turned to me and I looked down at my feet, “I’m sorry you guys. I didn’t mean to snap.” I replied.
“It’s okay sis. I get it.” Ray said and hugged me and kissed the top of my head.
I pulled away a few moments later, “So I want to know what’s up. Where are the girls? Did they make it? What about Bandit?” I asked dying for information.
“Well lets eat and well talk.” Frank said his eyes dark as he walked over to a shelf full of cans.
He pulled seven down before grabbing a jug of water and a stack of cups and walking to one of the tables, “Dinner is served.” he said.
We all settled down and dug into the cans of whatever this shit was made of. There wasn’t a large selection of food in the Zones. This stuff was called ‘Power Pup’ however dispite the fact it was classifed as dog food it wasn’t really. It was more like refried beans with shredded beef in it. Not my first choice but it was all we had.
We ate in silence for a bit before I broke the silence, “Okay enough I wanna know what happened. Now.” I replied.
Mikey sighed heavily, “Okay the night we all went to Glow all of us were able to get out of the club and leave. We didn’t even know that the club had blown up until later on. So we got back to the neighborhood we saw it was just….decimated. We went straight to your house and found your mother lying on the ground dead. Everyone stared freaking out wondering where Bandit and Nicki were but we found them safe and sound hiding behind a stack of boxes.”
“They were unharmed but covered in blood so we changed them and left. However sitting out there were a shit load of Dracs. We started running but Alexandria tripped and Chad stayed behind to get her. And…well that’s why we have Nicki.” Me said looking to Nicki who was stoically staring at the table.
“Anyhow so we left town however before we left we lost another one….Alicia. A Drac shot her.” Ray continued his eyes cutting to Mikey who had his eyes closed and his head bowed.
“So we got out here and found a group of people that were willing to fight Korse and what he was doing. This was a sect that was made up of about 20 people or so. We were with them for a while before Gerard thought that we could do better on our own. They were together but it was really unorganized. This is where we continued to part. Krista and Jamia stayed with that group. We still hear and see them from time to time.” Frank added on where Ray stopped.
“And Lyn and Bandit?” I asked.
“She’s gone. I don’t mean dead gone but not around anymore. Instead of staying with the sect or coming on with us she left and took Bandit with her. She told me that she didn’t want to do this and that I’d changed somehow…because of something or another…I don’t remember. Anyhow she made it clear that she didn’t want to be together after this either.” Gerard said.
My heart fell when those words crossed his lips. I stood up and walked over wrapping my arms around his neck in a hug.
"I'm sorry." I said.
I don't know why I felt the need to comfort Gerard and not Mikey but I did. And at the same time I couldn't help but feel an odd sensation at the pit of my stomach. Like...butterflies?
This could NOT happen. I quickly pulled away and I saw Gerard look a little surprised and hurt.
"I uh...I need to go change." I said and walked over and grabbed my bag.
From inside I pulled out a pair of red jeans, a black t-shirt, red leather gloves and my Converse before walking back into the little room i'd come out of earlier.
Things could not go like this. It couldn't happen. I wouldn't let it happen.
Candy's POV
Something hit me in the stomach and I opened my eyes reaching for my brass knuckles ready to fight when I saw it was Angel I stopped.
“What the fuck dude? Can’t you wake someone up in a normal way?” I asked taking my Vans off the floor where they’d fallen and starting to pull them on.
“I could, but where’s the fun in that?” she replied with a smirk.
I glared at her and looked around, I was the last one up, lovely. I had passed out in my clothes so I pushed my way past Angel and into the small bathroom to wash my face and brush my hair a bit.
Once I deemed myself half way decent I walked out to see I was alone, what the fuck. I grabbed up my back pack and ran out front, “Thanks for the mass departure info!” I told Angel smacking her upside the head walking over to my bike.
“Sorry were gonna go look around see what’s going on,” Mikey said.
“Yeah were not too far from your guys’ old hideout we wanna make sure the Dracs aren’t headin’ this way too.” Gerard said climbing into the drivers seat of their Trans Am.
“Gotcha,” I said opening the seat on my bike and pulling out the bag that I kept our guns in.
“What the hell?” Ray said eying the duffel bag, “Where’d that come from?”
“Her ass.” Angel said coming over and grabbing out her holsters and a couple of guns, after checking that they were loaded she put them in their places on her hips and grabbed a few rounds sticking them into her pockets.
“Where did you guys get all these?” Ray asked looking through the different kinds of guns, he pulled out one about the size of his palm,
“This thing can’t hurt anyone!” he said with a laugh.
I raised an eyebrow, “Wanna test it?” I asked.
“NO!” Angel yelled. “You cannot shoot my brother just when I got him back!”
“Fine, I won’t” I said sliding the small gun into my back pocket after checking to make sure the safety was on.
“So you still never answered the question, where’d you get all these?” he asked.
“My dad…he was special ops before Korse stepped in. When I left I grabbed what I could fit in the bag.” I said zipping up the bag and stowing it back under the seat.
“Ray get in the car,” Mikey said standing next to the Trans Am with the seat flipped up.
“I’m comin’” Ray said climbing in the back so Mikey could take the front passenger seat.
I swung my leg over my bike and Angel did the same. We revved our bikes waiting for the Trans Am to pull out and followed them down the road heading east.
We’d been riding for a while, I don’t know how long Angel was the one with the watch when the boys started slowing down.
I pulled up beside them, “Whats up?” I yelled.
Mikey just pointed ahead and I saw it, it looked like a box laying in the middle of the road. I looked over at Angel who had pulled up on the other side, she nodded and we sped up ahead looking on the sides of the road for signs of an ambush but when none appeared we slowed to a stop on either side of the box.
It was decent sized bout 2 ft high, white, with BLI stamped on it. I flung my kickstand down and walked upto it. Angel was already there knocking on it to see if it was empty. It wasn’t. By now the boys were around the box too.
“So who wants to open it?” Frank asked eying it.
“I will,” Angel said pulling out her knife she sliced it open.
Inside were a bunch of black cases.
I picked one up and opened it, “It’s a gun,” I said pulling it out of the case, “But where do you put the ammo?” I asked turning it over.
“Pulsar.” Mikey said reading the silver gilded letters over my shoulder.
I turned and pointed it at a cactus next to the road and squeezed the trigger. A blue beam of light shot out of the end and the cactus exploded.
“Oh shit.” I said looking at the Pulsar in my hand. I looked over at the guys and Angel who stood there astonished.
“I want one!” Frank yelled stepping towards the box.
“NO!” we all said at once as Ray grabbed the back of his shirt. “You are too spastic for one of those.” he said.
After a bit of pouting from Frank, we loaded the box of Pulsars into the back of the Trans Am, and I slid the one I held into my holster removing one of the guns and stowing it under my seat.
"We better hurry up and get back," Gerard said looking to the west where the sun was already starting to hang low.
"Yeah," the rest of us agreed firing up our engines.
We turned around and headed back towards the diner.
Wait…could it really have been them? When everything first started, when I’d first escaped to the Zones and had become a Killjoy, I’d had dreams where I would wake up and thought that I’d see them but it wasn’t true. Could this time be anything different?
