“Cassie c’mon!” my brother yelled.

I sighed, “I’m coming don’t have a baby!” I yelled back running to catch up to where my brother Ray and his friends were walking ahead of me.

It was Halloween and we were all out trick or treating. Well…actually we were taking my niece trick or treating and jacking candy from the neighbors that we visited. Of course they didn’t mind since my brother and I had grown up on this block.

“What were you doing back there Cassie?” Ray’s friend Frank asked as I caught up with the group.

“Tying my shoe.” I replied.

“A likely story!” he laughed.

I rolled my eyes. Frank was always the weird one of the four guys that hung around with my brother. He was only about an inch taller than my five foot six inch self. He had two arms full of tattoos and a piercing in his lips as well as gauges. He had a wife named Jamia who was amazing and was adorable with him. Tonight was actually Frank’s birthday but his girlfriend was out of town visiting a sick relative so he’d decided to tag along with us for the night.

“No more sugar for you Frankie.” Mikey scolded with a laugh.

Mikey was like my second older brother. He was tall and skinny and used to have glasses but had had lasik a few years back. In my opinion I had like his glasses better even if he did have amazing hazel eyes. His wife was Alicia. I hadn’t met her much but from what I knew she was pretty cool.

“But it’s my birthday!” Frank whined.

“So? You’ve already had three Red Bulls, a shot of 5 Hour Energy and 5 mini Snickers bars! No more! You’re cut off Iero.” Mikey replied.

Frank turned to the other guys for help but Gerard and Bob just shook their heads.

Bob was tall with blond hair and a beard. When you first looked at him you’d think he was some badass dude who you wouldn’t want to mess with. When the truth was that he was actually a teddy bear. I was one of the few people he let call him Bobby.

Then there was Gerard who was Mikey’s older brother. Gerard had pail skin and dark hair that brought out his gorgeous hazel eyes. He could sing like nobodies business.

Okay so if you have yet to notice I maybe have a bit of a crush on him. I mean could you blame me? However I didn’t dare go after him for two reasons. The first was he was my brother’s friend. I jus didn’t do that. I mean I’ve heard these guys talk about the action they get from their girls and I’m pretty sure that Ray still thought I was a virgin so….yeah.

The second however was the most important of the two however. Gerard had a serious girlfriend. In fact they had a little girl together named Bandit. His girlfriend’s name was Lyn-Z and they were really happy together. I knew that for a long time Gerard thought he’d end up alone but now he had his girls and it was nice to see him smile how he did now.

In front of us danced my little cousin Nicki danced along in her Superman outfit, her curls bouncing around as she did so. She was 7 and loved anything that had to do with superheroes and hanging out with Ray and I.

Ray was the oldest of the three of us at 27, then came my sister Alexandria who was 24 and then me at 18. I was much closer to Ray than I was Alexandria. Maybe it was because when she was 16 and I was 10 she had moved out to live with her then boyfriend, now husband Chad and had Nicki. That left me with Ray who still lived at home at the time and before I knew it we’d become closer than ever.

“So you wanna come out with us and the girls tomorrow night?” Ray asked as we walked along.

“You’re inviting me along? To hang out with you? Really and truly? I feel so honored.” I fake sobbed.

“Come off it squirt!” Ray said and gave me a playful shove.

I laughed, “What? You never invite me anywhere!” I replied.

“Lies!” Frankie yelled.

What was with him and questioning my stories tonight? Weirdo.

“Okay so you invite me sometimes but not all the time.” I said.

“Point taken now are you going out with us tonight or not?” he asked.

“I guess if I have to hang out with you old men…sure.” I said and all the guys rolled their eyes.

“If we’re old then you’re in diapers little girl.” Gerard said slinging an arm around my shoulder.

“I’m no little girl Gee. Trust me.” I said with a wink and he laughed however Mikey and Ray gave me a disgusted look.

“Will you please not flirt with my friends? Especially ones that are in a relationship?” Ray asked.

“But Ray-Ray all your friends are in relationships! What friends am I supposed to flirt with?” I asked.

“That’s the point! You’re not supposed to!” he replied.

“Aunt Cassie! Uncle Ray! C’mon!” Nicki called from in front of us.

The six of us ran forward to meet her.

**********

The next night I dressed in a pair of black skinny jeans, a cute purple top with a cute lightning bolt/Zebra/cheetah print on the front and one shoulder that was a chain type of thing, my beat up Converse, a clutch and some silvery and purple bangles. With my naturally curly hair gelled into spirals I grabbed my house keys and headed out.

I walked the five minutes from my house to Frank’s where we were all meeting. Upon reaching the house I climbed the front steps and headed straight inside with out knocking. It was pointless since I knew no one was going to get off their lazy ass and open the door.

“Hellooo?” I called.

“In the living room Cass!” Mikey’s voice called from down the hall.

I walked into the room and found everyone was already there. Ray sat at one end of the couch with Krista on his lap, Frank and Mikey sitting on the rest of the couch the same way with Jamia (who was back from her relative's house) and Alicia. Alexandria and Chad were sitting on the floor in front of the coffee table playing a lively game of slap jack with Gerard and Lyn-Z. Bob sat alone in an armchair watching with amusement. Nicki and Bandit were at Ray and I’s house with our Mom.

“Hey Bobby Bear.” I said plopping down on Bob’s lap.

“Hey Cass, how’s it going?” he asked.

“Not too bad. And I must say you look dashing tonight Mr. Bryar.” I replied complimenting the black jeans and black button up he wore.

“As do you m’dear. I wouldn’t be seen with anyone else.” he said and both of us broke into laughter.

As Bob was the only guy in the circle that didn’t have a girlfriend and I never seemed to have a boyfriend so when we went out I was Bob’s date. There was absolutely nothing between us. We’d never kissed and we’d NEVER had sex. And we never would. It would be too weird. He was like family.

Now just because we were on a date didn’t mean I was a cockblocker. Actually I was far from it. I cannot count how many times Bryar got laid just because I’d introduced girls to him. He was eternally grateful to me for every piece of ass he got.

“So now that everyone’s here let’s bounce!” Mikey yelled.

“Fuck yeah!” Frank replied as him and Jamia jumped up from the couch.

We all trooped outside and the eight of us separated into two cars. It was Ray, Krista, Alexandria, Chad, Bob and Me in Ray’s car and the others in Frank’s car. Tonight we were going to a place called Glow. It was black inside with neon paint splattered on the walls and flashing black lights everywhere. It was most definitely a trip.

We pulled up to the club and Ray and Frank surrendered their keys to Gerard and I since we’d be the only ones since he was a recovering alcoholic and I was only 18. The lot of us headed inside and were met instantly with pulsing music. I grabbed Bob by the hand and dragged him down to the dance floor.

It wasn’t easy since he was protesting the entire time but after a few moments of prodding he began to move along with me. Out of the corner of my eye I saw a group of people just standing just off the dance floor. They didn’t move, they didn’t dance or smile. They were BLI Zombies.

Better Living Incorporated were a new company that the government had put into power to help out with the spike of drugs and violence in the past few years. However some people, me included, thought that some of their methods were going too far.

They had pills that you could take and it pretty much shut down the part of your brain that you emotions came from. It made you a zombie just without the craving for flesh and brains. In fact Glow was one of the last few clubs that still existed. That was why we’d gone here. There was really nowhere else to go.

The guy who ran BLI was named Korse and he was slowly starting to shut down clubs and things. A group of Korse’s men or Draculoids as they were called would bust into clubs and start shutting things down. A lot of times it got out of control.

I shook the thoughts from my head and concentrated on Bob and our friends who had migrated toward us. It was a mess of people as the eight of us danced up and against each other. I was laughing with the others and having fun, the heat in the room rising and my spirits high.

However one moment I was having fun and suddenly the room erupted in screams. Jamia, Alicia and I were grinding against one another, making the guys drool and my head shot up. That’s when I saw Dracs running into club, their guns out, lasers going everywhere, people dropping like flies.

“FUCK!” I heard Gerard curse over the roar of the crowd.

All of us scattered. Gerard, Lyn-Z, Jamia and Frank ran toward the front exit and Ray, Krista, Alexandria and Chad ran for the back of the club. Bob had grabbed my hand was pulling me along toward one of the exits.

His grip was tight as we ran, his hand warm in mine. I was grateful for the fact that I’d decided to wear sneakers instead of heels tonight like I’d come close to doing. If I’d worn heels I’d be screwed right now.

I could see an ‘EXIT’ sign glowing just in front of us like a heavenly beacon. However just as we got close to it a Draculoid appeared just to our right. Suddenly everything began to move in slow motion.

I watched as the Draculoid raised his gun toward me. My heart stopped in my chest as his finger pulled the trigger. I froze on the spot and a second later Bob’s body was in front of me. The laser that had come from the Drac’s gun hit Bob squarely in the chest.

Bob crumpled to the ground as another person ran past the Draculoid and he went after them. I fell to my knees beside Bob.

“Bob? Bobby Bear? Please open your eyes!” I yelled the tears running down my face as I shook his body.

He let out a low moan and his eyes fluttered open, “Cassie?” he asked.

“Yeah it’s me. C’mon let’s get you out of here.” I said.

“No.”

“NO? Are you serious? I’m not leaving you here! You’ll be killed!” I screamed.

“It’s too late Cass. Look just get out of here okay? Find the others and get the hell outta here. Outta town. Just go.” he said and before I could say anything his hand which had been holding onto mine so tightly a moment before grew slack and the light behind his eyes disappeared.

A split second later I was running back towards the exit, Bob’s words echoing in my ears. The cool night air hit me as I threw open the heavy metal door. People were scattering everywhere as they ran and tried to hide. They knew that if they were caught then they’d end up as BLI Zombies, forced to take the pills that would shut them down.

“RAY!” I screamed for my brother as I searched his the crowd for some sign of him or my sister or our friends any sign of anyone I knew.

I don’t know how long I’d been looking for them just that my voice had gone hoarse when suddenly there was a huge ‘BOOM!’ from behind me. A wave of heat and air hit me sending me falling onto the pavement, pain shooting through my palms.

I turned and saw the entire building in flames. I felt my heart shatter in my chest as the thought that my friends and siblings could be in there struck me. However I pushed that thought out of my mind. I had to get out of here. Maybe they’d go back to Frank or I’s house.

Pushing myself from the ground I looked down at my torn palms and tattered jeans momentarily before running toward where we’d parked the cars. It took a few moments since I’d twisted my ankle when I’d fallen but eventually I found it. I climbed in and started it up pulling out.

I drove to the neighborhood where Frank and Ray and I’s houses were but when I got there my heart fell. Every house was either trashed or blazing with fire. They’d been here. I should’ve known.

Draculoids had shown up just at the start of the week and started with shutting down clubs and music and clothing stores. I should’ve known the next thing they were going to do was start gutting the city. I’d heard about them doing it to other cities.

In fact we’d talked about the other day when the Dracs had showed up. We’d wondered if we should leave but had decided against it. I now firmly regretted that decision.

I pushed on the gas and zoomed toward Ray and I’s house, the only thing on my mind at the time were my mother alone in Ray and I’s house with Nicki and Bandit.

I pulled into the driveway and ran/hobbled inside. The door was hanging off it’s hinges, the glass from the window panes at the top shattered.

“MOM?!? BANDIT?!? NICKI?!?” I yelled through the house but got no response.

I hurried down the hall and through the kitchen and into the living room. I found no one however what I did find stopped my heart. The carpet was stained bright red with blood, a t-shirt of Nicki’s covered in it.

Picking up the shirt I collapsed on the couch. I sat there until the sun began to shine through the window. No one had come. If they were coming they would’ve been here by now, Gerard and Lyn-Z and Alexandria and Chad would want to know their girls were safe. Ray would’ve come looking for Mom.

I absentmindedly turned on the radio and of course the explosion was big news.

“Late last night a popular local club called Glow was shut down by a team of Draculoids on Korse’s orders. However shortly after arriving there it is reported that one patron knocked over a light causing a fire which quickly spread to the boiler in the basement. The boiler over heated before ultimately exploding and decimating the building as well as the one next to it. It is reported that there have been over 200 deaths of club goes as well as 10 Draculoids. More bodies are still being pulled from the rubble. Authorities say that the full body count will be announced by noon and will most likely range from 220-300.”

For the first time since the Dracs had shown up the tears stopped. I walked upstairs and made a beeline for the bathroom. I found an ACE bandage and wrapped my swollen ankle with it just like I’d learned when I was an assistant athletic trainer in high school.

Once my foot was wrapped I walked to my room and pulled off my bloody and tattered clothes and changed into a new pair of jeans, a plain black t-shirt, purple hoodie and my converse. From my closet I pulled out my favorite leather backpack which was worn but reliable and began to stuff everything I wanted inside.

Now that I was packed I sighed and headed out the house I’d lived in since I was born. I knew in my heart that I’d never see it again. That even if I did come back here it would most likely be gone. However I couldn’t let that bother me.

I grabbed Ray’s keys from the table by the door and head outside. I cranked the car and pulled out. With one last look at the house I turned the corner and was off my street. I didn’t know where I was going just that Korse had to go down.
