BABETTE
That night had been so perfect in every aspect. It had exceeded all my expectations. My plan had been a success and Gerard and I got what we both wanted so desperately out of it. And of course we were still being teased because the guys noticed that we did not return with any milk, only huge grins spread across each of our faces. We didn’t even care. We couldn’t even care. We had gotten what we wanted and we were satisfied…for the moment.
But Gerard had been acting very strange lately. He’d been eyeing me and watching me, which wasn’t unusual for him but he was quiet about it. It was like he was studying me or something, as if he was plotting something big. Gerard and I were sitting watching TV in the expansive living room couch when a Tiffany’s Diamonds commercial came across the flat-screen TV. The little girl in was instantly captivated by the three shimmering, glistening heart-shaped diamonds set in a white gold ring.
“Wow, that’s a pretty ring.” I said absently staring at it. Gerard stared at me and looked as though he was about to write something down, but didn’t. He must’ve been making a mental note of some kind. And then, there was an abrupt knock on the front door that echoed through the house.
“I got it!” Mikey called. Then there was a pause where we heard the door open and then Mikey called back and said, “Gerard, get over here!” it sounded kind of urgent and I was curious. Gerard looked disgruntled by the distraction and we got up and went to the door.
Next to Mikey there stood a beautifully stunning, bleach blonde bombshell with light olive skin. She was smiling, showing off two rows of perfectly white teeth. She was wearing a white blouse with dark wash skinny jeans that were skin tight and topped with six inch Jimmy Choo’s. She was gorgeous, a perfect ten. I reached up and touched my scar, suddenly self conscious about it. I was wearing sweat pants, ew. I felt over weight compared to her and sluggish and imperfect.
“Gee!” She exclaimed in a voice that would go well with bubble gum and cheer leading. Then she jumped up and threw her arms around his neck. I was taken aback and Gerard looked down right horrified, as if he had seen a ghost. She went in to kiss him and he literally threw her off of him. I was reeling and almost frightened by what was happening around me.
“Clara, what are you doing here?” he asked rather angrily. I was in shock and I was so very confused it was making my head hurt. Clara looked hurt and pouted, making her look even more adorable than she already was.
“I finally found you!” Clara exclaimed, looking kind of surprised that he wasn’t happy to see her.
“Clara, get inside we need to have a serious talk. Babes, I um, this is Clara, my ex girlfriend.” Gerard said nervously, turning to me.
LATER
Gerard took Clara into another room to talk and I was left with the boys. I was heartbroken. She looked so perfect next to him. My head was spinning and I felt suddenly insecure about the way I looked. Compared to her I was just a slob. She was perfect.
“Hey, aren’t you gonna eavesdrop with me?” I asked as the guys started to leave the room. Usually the loved being nosy and besides, I didn’t want to be alone in this.
“Nah, we got to live this story. You should listen though. I can’t believe he never told you about this.” Ray said, shaking his head and patting me on the back before him and everybody else left.
Why hadn’t he told me? Why was he keeping it a secret? Maybe he still had feelings for her… I slammed my head against the door and listened intently.
“Gee, aren’t you happy to see me?” I heard Clara’s pouty voice. I heard Gerard sigh in exasperation.
“No, I’m not. Things don’t work like that. You left me Clara. You ended it between us. You can just jump back into my life like this. I have a new girlfriend now.” Gerard said sternly. A little flutter of relief came over my heart.
“Her? She’s your new girlfriend?” Clara asked in a disgusted tone. I bit my lip.
“Watch your mouth! She’s been a better girlfriend than you ever were. Now get out. Go.” Gerard said haughtily. I jumped back and Clara came storming out. She didn’t even look at me as she stomped out of the house. I peered into the room and saw Gerard sitting and messaging his temples.
“Why didn’t you tell me about her Gerard?” I asked softly, stepping in next to him.
“Huh?” Gerard asked absently.
“Why didn’t you tell me about her?” I repeated, a little more desperately this time.
“She’s not important. Don’t worry about it.” Gerard said, standing up and walking by me. I followed him into the hallway.
“How can I not worry about it? She’s so-so perfect!” I said shrilly. Gerard stopped and glanced at me. “You should’ve told me! We aren’t supposed to keep secrets from each other. I’ve never kept anything like this from you.”
“I didn’t tell you because I don’t like to talk about it, okay? Now will you leave me alone?” he asked loudly. I groaned in frustration and stormed into the bedroom and locked the door. Then my cell phone rang.
“Hello Babs.” Clara’s voice said on the other line.
“Hello. How did you learn my name? How did you get my phone number?” I asked, looking out the window to make sure I wasn’t being watched.
“That’s not important. If you want to know what happened between me and Gerard, meet me at the Icarus Café at three tomorrow afternoon.” She said as monotonously as her voice would allow. For a second I bit my lip. I would feel wretchedly guilty if I went behind Gerard’s back. But the thought came to me “if he can keep secrets then so could I”.
“I’ll be there.”
