Chapter Two
We had just boarded the Hogwarts Express and to be honest I was slightly scared, yet very excited for school. I followed Ron and Harry to and empty compartment and sat down across from Harry and next to Hermione. I stared out the window and watched parents say goodbye to their children and rush them on the train that was supposed to leave in five minutes.
“O look, the poor little girl has to deal with you three annoying gits.” I heard someone say. I turned around, toward the opening and saw a blonde headed guy. He was tall…and if I do dare to say so, kinda hot.
“Shut up Malfoy, I’m sure she won’t want to be friends- nor acquaintances for that matter- with you.” Ron said, his face getting red.
The boy walked in, standing in front of me. I saw rage written on Harry’s face and I couldn’t understand why. I stared up at the person in front of me, he was looking at me, with a thoughtful expression on his face.
“I’m Draco Malfoy.” He finally said, holding out his hand for me to shake.
As I shook his hand I told him who I was, “Unity Bells.” I told him. It had been Dumbledore’s idea to change my last name; he decided that we should keep my first name, because it would be a little uncomfortable with me.
Hermione, Ron, and Harry stared at me with open mouths as I smiled up at him. He smiled back, and I thought I saw Hermione’s mouth twitch upwards, just a little though.
“I guess I’ll be seeing you later.” He said, and before I could reply back, he was already out of the compartment and making his way down the hall. I felt the turn jolt forward and realized that we were leaving for Hogwarts now.
I looked back out the window and saw everybody’s parents’ and what not waving from the platform until we disappeared. I felt three pairs of eyes on me and when I turned around I was met with Ron growling at me.
“Do you know who he is?” he yelled.
“Uhm, yea. Draco Malfoy- he told me so.” I said.
“Don’t play smart with me, I know perfectly well who he is.”
“It doesn’t seem like it, you just asked me if I knew who he was and I told you.”
“That’s Draco Malfoy!” he exclaimed, ignoring my remark.
I clapped, “Good for you.”
“Unity, I think what he’s trying to say is that the boy you just met is, yes, Malfoy, but he’s mean to us and hates Harry,” Hermione said, “And worst of all, he calls me a mudblood. I don’t think you should hang around him, he’s bad news.”
I looked at her then at Harry, then back to her, “What’s a…a mudblood?”
“It’s a muggle that has magical powers.” She answered.
“Is that a good thing or a bad thing to be called that?”
“It’s not very nice, not very nice at all.”
I dropped the conversation at that and went back to looking out the window. There wasn’t anything to interesting to look at…just a lot of green. I sighed and then heard snoring near me. I looked to see that Ron had fallen asleep and so had Hermione. Her book was propped up in her hands, as if she was reading it, but her eyes were closed and she was breathing lightly. I looked at Harry, he was staring out of the window and looked like he was concentrating very hard on something, and he looked a bit distressed too.
“Harry?” I asked him, grabbing a hold of his arm, to gain his attention.
“Hmm?”
“Tell me about Hogwarts please.” I said, my voice barely over a whisper, I didn’t want to wake my two friends next to me, especially when I knew that Hermione had been having nightmares all night long. She needed a nap, or at least ten minutes of rest.
Harry sighed and looked at me, “Alright.” He agreed and continued to tell me about the moving stairs, the Great Hall and described every little detail of what Hogwarts looked like. He told me it was like his home, his real home. I smiled at him when he brought up good memories and when he told me that back in second year they had a dimwitted DADA (which I found out meant Defense Against the Dark Arts) teacher named Lockhart that was more concerned about his looks then anything else. After a while I stopped listening to what he was saying and nodded my head when I thought it was necessary.
Eventually Ron woke up, just as the Trolley Lady was making her way towards us. She had a bit of an annoying voice really. When she came to a stop in front of us Ron had gotten two chocolate frogs and some jelly beans that apparently had weird flavors- not all of them being very tasty. I watched in horror as Ron ate, eventually I decided that I needed to stretch my legs out a bit. I got up and walked out of the compartment (of course after telling Harry and Ron where I was going- Hermione was still asleep). They both nodded understandingly and I walked out. I was looking at the ground, not really paying any attention to where I was walking when I ran into somebody. I looked up and saw that it was Draco. I mumbled an apology and started to walk past him when he grabbed my arm and pushed me up against the wall.
“Has anyone ever told you that you are very attractive?” he asked.
I stared at him and stuttered, “No. Why?”
“Really?” his silvery orbs burned into mine, “Well I find you very pretty.” He said, his face coming ever so close to mine.
“Get off of her Malfoy.” I heard Harry say. I turned my head and saw Harry standing with Hermione besides him.
“I’m sorry that your “friend” here happened to ruin our fun.” Draco said to me and without a fight let me go and went back from the place he had just come from. I was shaking so badly. Was he just lying to get what I thought he wanted?
“Hermione? Is there a bathroom on the train?” I asked.
“Yes, here I show it to you.” She said and I followed her to the bathroom. Once I was inside I locked it and looked around for something sharp. I soon found a piece of glass and pulled up the sleeves to my sweatshirt. I quickly ran the glass through my arm and watched the scarlet liquid leak out. I sighed. It felt so much better, I haven’t done that in ages and I was starting to get the feeling that I would explode inside. I flushed the toilet (I love magic, have I mentioned that) and ran my hands over the water, trying to get the flow of blood to stop so that Hermione didn’t question me. When I came out I had my sleeves pulled past my hands and followed Hermione back to the compartment that we had been using.
About an hour later and we were at Hogwarts. We got off the train and got on carriages that were being pulled by…some type of horse. I saw Harry staring at it with wide eyes. I followed Hermione onto the carriage and sat down next to some blonde chick. She smiled at me and Hermione introduced her to me, her name was Luna and I thought she was pretty cool…although a little crazy. When the castle came in sight I gasped. It was HUGE and absolutely beautiful.
“Isn’t it beautiful?” Luna asked me. I nodded at her, I couldn’t speak. Everyone in the carriage laughed at my facial expression, but this was the one time I couldn’t hold in my feelings. It was absolutely gorgeous!
“This year, we have a very special transfer from Russia. I expect all of you to be very nice and welcoming to her. Unity, please come forward so that we can sort you into your house.” Professor Dumbledore said. I walked down the long hall and made my way to the front and sat down on the stool in front of Professor McGonagall. She put an old hat on my head and before it was even fully on my head I heard it talking.
‘Hmmm, very difficult decision. You would do great in Slytherin, cunning and sly. Able to get what you want. But in Gryffindor you could excel in places others can’t. You have great powers.’
‘Please I would like to be with my friends.’ I thought.
‘Friends, you must find new friends, but-ah. I see you are friends with the Golden Trio as they are called. Very well than. Are you sure? But just know I could sort you into Slytherin if I wanted.’
I held my breath, waiting for it to shout out my house. You see, all the first years went- so I was able to see how it worked before it was my turn.
“Gryffindor!” It roared and McGonagall took off the hat and I made my way to the table that was clapping and cat whistling. I smiled and sat down next to a boy with short brown hair.
