GERARD
“Thank you and goodnight!” I screamed our final goodbyes into the microphone and the record release show. The crowd loved the album, they loved what they had heard. I felt good about what we were putting out. It felt right.
But now it was time for the hard part. All night I had been watching Babes standing in the side stage. Her blue eyes wide with excitement, her hands clasped together, only separating to wave at me when she caught my stare. I would wink at her and then go back to what I was doing, knowing she would understand why I couldn’t wave back.
Everybody screamed and shouted as we left the stage. I looked up to see that Babes wasn’t in the side stage anymore. Brian had taken her backstage to the dressing rooms where everybody was going to celebrate. All apart of the plan.
Babette was the most beautiful girl I’d ever met, inside and out. She was one of the few who actually stuck with me through it all, held my hand all during all those hard times. She was my anchor, my rock, my support beam, my everything. I wanted to be there for her just as she had been there for me. I wanted her to have everything she’d ever dreamed of. I wanted to give all that I had to her. I wanted to give her the moon on a string.
I wanted to make her my wife.
She had been begging me to tell her what the surprise was all week, and I kept refusing. Everybody new what I had planned except for her. The plan was to get her to the backstage area after the show, where everybody would gather around. Then I would pop the question and, well I guess we’d just have to see what happens after that. I’d gotten her a seven karat diamond ring from Tiffany’s. She’d it in a commercial and said it was pretty, so I went with it.
The more I thought about it, the more nervous I became. So much could go wrong. What if she said no? Oh god, I couldn’t bare the thought of it. Just the idea of asking that one, simple yet life changing question made me want to throw up all over the place.
Everybody was putting their instruments away as I walked by to get backstage. Bob stopped finished what he was doing and gave a one of his rare smiles. I tried my best to return it, but I was so nervous I didn’t know how it had come out. Ray and Frank put the guitars in their cases and stood up, each patting me on the shoulder and smiling proudly at me. Lastly, Mikey handed his bass to the stage hand and put his arms over my shoulder. These small gestures of brotherly love gave me a newfound confidence.
The five of us practically marched down the corridor leading backstage. I had to be strong. I had to fight this sick feeling in my stomach. I had to go back there and prove Babette how much I needed her, how much I loved her.
We entered backstage and everybody greeted us with a roar of applause and lots of congratulations. I smiled anxiously and fought my way through the thick throngs of people, trying to find her.
And then I laid my eyes on her…
She was wearing a beautiful black cocktail dress with little red cherries all over it. It conformed to her body and showed off her voluptuous figure that I loved so much. Sure, I’d seen her all the way to the venue and been watching her almost the entire show, but seeing her at that moment knowing what I was about to do was like seeing her for the first time and falling in love all over again. She beamed and waved me over. I tried to walk and my knees buckled underneath me.
“Hey silly, you guys killed it tonight!” She said, pulling me into a tight embrace. The smell of her perfume made me dizzy, breathless. “Baby I am so proud of you.” she whispered in my ears. I went weak in the knees again at the sound of her low and sensual voice.
“Hold on one second.” I mumbled, pulling away. She furrowed her brow, innocently unaware of what was going to happen. “All right everybody, can I have your attention?” I called out over the crowd, trying not to let my voice break. Everybody fell silent and I thought to myself “Come on, its now or never…”
“Gerard, what are you doing?” She asked in a hushed tone. I held up my hand to her.
I looked directly in her eyes and the crowd of people seemed to disappear. It was just me and her, all alone, nobody else.
“Babes, I love you more than I’ve ever loved anybody before. I feel like if I loose you, I won’t be able to go on. I love you more than I love myself. I need you in my life. You’ve been endlessly supportive, amazingly helpful, and are truly more beautiful than any girl I’ve ever seen. Having you around makes everything worth while. You stuck with me through my hardest times, and I promise to help you get through yours if it’s the last thing I do.” I said, loud enough for everybody to hear but never taking my eyes off her. She looked confused still and was starting to tear up. I leaned in and kissed her.
Then I got down on one knee, her left hand clasped in my shaking fingers. Her right hand was now cupped over her mouth and the tears were starting to flow from those blue eyes I was so addicted to. Fumbling slightly, I pulled the Tiffany’s box out of my jacket pocket and with one hand opened it. I watched her eyes light up and her jaw drop when she saw the massive diamond in the white gold setting. I couldn’t help the proud grin on my face at her reaction. The crowd encircling us “awed” happily.
“Babes, will you make me the happiest man in the world and marry me?” I asked finally through the lump in my throat. I carefully slipped the ring onto her ring finger and waited for her reaction.
“Yes! Yes, a thousand times yes!” she shouted, tackling me to the ground and kissing my face everywhere. I saw her heart explode in her eyes as mine did the same. I was so happy I could’ve cried. I was so happy I did cry. I pulled Babes up off the ground and picked her up, kissing her smiling mouth and spinning her around. I felt her black dress swirl around my legs and I spun her. Everybody was applauding and I felt like I was the hero in the movie who’d just gotten the girl of his dreams.
In a way I was the hero, and I was nothing without my heroin…
