BABETTE
The Next Morning
“Good morning my beautiful, lovely, brand new fiancé.” Gerard greeted me the next morning. We were laying face to face, the sunlight pouring in the window. I yawned and stretched before leaning over and kissing him hello. Then I lifted my left hand, feeling the weight of the massive diamond ring on my finger. I watched as it sparkled and shimmered in the sunlight. It was beautiful, and so was last night.
“We are getting married.” I said, still unable to comprehend the thought of us as man and wife. “We are going to be married!” I said again, louder with a little laughter. Gerard laughed too and picked me up by the waist and sat me on top of him.
“You are going to be the trophy wife I never thought I’d get!” he exclaimed. I laid down on top of him, giggling madly. I kissed his forehead, his nose, each of his cheeks and then his soft, sweet lips.
“I cannot wait to be married to you!” I smiled, pressing my lips to his again and again.
“You are going to get the wedding of your dreams.” He promised, leaning up and kissing me this time. I laughed crazily with the happiness I was feeling.
“To match the ring of my dreams?” I asked jokingly, staring at the ring again. God it was just perfect. This entire thing was perfect! The moment, the proposal, it was amazing how everything just seemed to fall together so flawlessly.
“What song should we dance to at our wedding?” Gerard asked, twirling his calloused fingers around my curly black hair.
“I think we should do ‘Come What May’ from Moulin Rouge.” I offered. It was our favorite love song, other than “Demolition Lovers” of course. It was from one of our favorite movies, a movie about love over coming all obstacles. And that theme seemed pretty relevant to all that we had gone through together.
“That’s a great idea. What type of dress do you wanna wear?” he said dreamily. I bit my lip and thought for a moment.
“I dunno… something red.” I said finally, still pondering what my dream dress would look like.
“Red? Aren’t wedding dresses supposed to be white?” Gerard asked, sounding very confused. I nodded and thought some more.
“Red is my favorite color. I think a white dress would be boring, don’t you?” I explained, turning to him.
“You’re right. Red would be a good color for our wedding. Maybe we could have it in the same church where we filmed ‘Helena’.” He offered. My heart leapt at the thought.
“That would be perfect! Of my god, I have to tell Elodie! We have to get her out here for the wedding!” I said, realizing I’d forgotten to call her last night.
“Don’t worry, she already knows. Everybody knew that we were getting married but you.” he said. I laughed. “We don’t have to fly her out. I have a plan.” he said proudly. He must’ve been planning this for weeks.
“Ooh, do tell.” I said slyly.
“The band is going to tour for a while, giving us time to plan the wedding and everything. Then when we make a round up to New Jersey, Elodie and my family will meet us there and then we’ll have the wedding.” He explained. I raised my eyebrows.
“Wow, you really figured this out.” I said, impressed. With his planning skills.
“I decided that I wanted to marry you the day I caught you hanging out with Clara. And y’know when I went on that drive? Well I was out buying your ring.” he told me. Just the sound of her stupid name sent a rush of guilt through me.
“Why’d you decide to marry me then?” I asked, feeling pretty confused about it.
“That’s the day I realized that if I didn’t marry you soon, I wouldn’t have you much longer. I was afraid you’d find somebody better than me. And I also realized that I would always love you, no matter what you did or what happened.” He explained. I felt my eyes grow wide.
“Gerard, I’ve never loved somebody as entirely as I love you.” I smiled, pressing my lips to his once again.
