Chapter Two: Getting Into It

And maybe I was just the worst brother on the planet.

“Enough, Gee! I can’t take it anymore,” Kaylie exclaimed and shout out of bed, grabbing hold of my face and forcing me to look at her. “We’re in love and care about each other. Mikey will just have to accept that because it’s already done, we’re stuck together. We can justify it, explain, and give them our account of how we fell in love with each other. That’s all we can do, though. However they feel afterward is their right. But whether or not they approve, I will marry you. Because I love you more than life and you’re who I want to spend forever with.”

I loved it when Kaylie took charge and kept me freaking out too badly or doing anything rash.

“Got it?” she asked firmly, making sure I heard all of what she had to say.

I nodded and replied, “I love you.”

She smiled and brought our lips together once more.

After a while she pulled away and her smile was still wide as she gazed at me.

“So what now?” I asked curiously. “Do we start arranging plans? Like hiring a planner or looking at venues or flowers or anything else?”

“No, Gee,” she replies softly, shaking her head. “We can’t plan anything until we know for sure what the guest list is.”

My face scrunched up in confusion.

“What would that matter?”

She sighed and said, “Well, if your parents don’t approve, and I’m not saying they will or won’t, but if they don’t we have to consider our options and figure out if we to go big or small.”

I smiled and asked, “Well what do you want, babe?”

She shook her head gently and replied, “Honestly, I don’t really care as long as you’ll be the one standing at the end of the altar waiting for me.”

At that I couldn’t help but lean in and kiss her forehead.

“So what about your parents?” I asked as I exhaled.

“Gee, you obviously already asked my dad’s permission. That was the one thing I’m sure he talked to you about whenever you and I hung out and I introduced you to my parents. But, my dad likes you- he trusts you. I can see that just when I see the way he acts around you.”

I smiled a faint smile. “Didn’t he like Mikey, too, though?”

Kaylie made a sour expression and said, “Actually, that was more my mom. Don’t get me wrong, they both approved of Mikey but my dad would always call him a shrimp and kept stressing how much I’d need someone bigger and with muscles, someone who could protect and take care of me.” Kaylie smiled and shook her head as if recalling an old memory. “Basically a brawny version of Mikey. My dad said someone like that would be perfect for me.”

She eyed carefully and smiled.

“That’s why he likes you so much. You’re so different from your brother but in the best ways possible.”

At that my eyebrows shot up in a questionable manner.

“It sounds like you like that we’re so different.”

“Of course I do!” she said instantly. “Do you think I could stand to be with you if you looked or acted anything like your brother?” She shook her head at me and added, “That’d be too weird. But I didn’t date you because you’re his brother, either. I never intended to cause problems. In fact.” She smiled widely as she turned to gaze into my eyes. “You were the one who made the first move. If I remember correctly, you asked me out.”

I smiled and inquired, “So is this all on me then?”

“No!” she countered, appalled. “I’m glad you did.”

Kaylie smiled widely and sternly took hold of my face before she planted a hot and heavy kiss right on my lips.

I responded eagerly at her intensity. But just as I was about to deepen the kiss, she pulled away and smiled that bright, mischievous smile I loved so much.

“Do you actually think I’d let you get all the credit for this relationship?”
I laughed and pulled her into me to kiss her once more.

“So, we have your parents and our close friends and possibly my parents,” I mumbled between kisses. “If we can get them to come.”

“Yeah,” she murmured and ended the kiss with one last long lip lock. “Okay!” she exclaimed, pulling away from me completely and running over to her dresser before she started pulling out shirts.

“Come on, babe,” I groaned. “Come back over here.”

She giggled at my helplessness but continued searching through her drawers for something to wear.

“Gerard, we have to get ready,” she stated rationally. “We both need to shower and get dressed so we can be presentable to society.”

“I don’t want to be presentable,” I retorted. “Society’s overrated anyway.”

I sighed long and hard before meeting her gaze.

“Besides, I’d rather stay in bed with you all day and love you till it hurts and we’re both exhausted and sweaty and unable to move.”

And that she smiled widely but didn’t come back to bed.

"Where are we going to go anyway?” I questioned anxiously.

She sighed and said, “We have to see your parents, Gerard. We have to tell them about us so we can know what to expect from here on out and move on with the wedding.”

I groaned and asked, “And we have to do this all today?”

“Please, Gerard. Just call them and see if it’s okay for us to come over. For them to finally meet me face to face for the first time in years and accept the fact that you proposed and I said yes and we’re engaged now.”

I could tell Kaylie was getting frustrated just a bit but I really didn’t want to do this today. I was just getting used to the fact that I had asked her and she actually said yes. I still just wanted the wow factor of today to sink in fully and last longer before we stepped into the seriousness of this confrontation.

I looked up and noticed Kaylie was gauging my reaction through the mirror that was above her dresser.

“I’m sorry, Gee, I just- I need to get this off my chest and out of the way. Get their reaction over with so we can know and move on.”

My expression became contemplating as I assessed her response. Deep down I knew she was right but she still seemed edgy to me.

“You sound like you’re guilty and about to confess a huge crime,” I noted simply.

And the look she gave me then was enough to assure me that I was on the right track.

“Kaylie?” I asked seriously. “Baby, you know we’ve done nothing wrong, right? So what if you did used to date my brother? It’s been years since then. And, sweetie, we’re in love with each other. And I love you so much. Nothing can change that or us, okay?”

She nodded gently and managed to give me a small smile.

“I just don’t want to lose you, Gee. If your brother wants to kill you and your parents are okay with us being together do you really think you can choose me over your family? Choose me over your brother? Because if he isn’t okay with it and you marry me… he may never speak to you again.”

Her words were so straight forward and serious. They felt binding and like what she had just said would indeed turn out that way. It made everything more real for me.

I don’t think I ever realized the seriousness of Kaylie and Mikey’s relationship- I mean, how could anyone be in love at twelve or thirteen? But now it seemed so intimate and real and that scared me. Especially because I didn’t want to ever lose her now that I had her. So if my brother did strongly disapprove, I felt as if might just decide to follow my heart… And my heart was Kaylie.
