"So," Frank began, flopping down onto one of my sofas "What are we gonna do about Mel?"
"What can we do?" Matt asked. He hadn't Mel sing, or see what she looked like but he had heard the important thing.
Mikey put his head in his hands "There's nothing we can do."
"Hey!" Ray snapped, making us all look at him "She might've taken like, a few of our songs."
"More like our entire album." I told him sulkily.
"But that's not going to stop us!" Ray told us "We'll write new songs. Find a new Record Label to sign to."
"It won't be that easy." Frank told him.
"It's worth a try, right?" Mikey said, standing up and reaching for his bass "Right. Who's got an idea for a song?"
The next morning, I was sat at the table reading the newspaper when Mikey ran in excitedly. I was looking at jobs available locally. I knew I was going to need one while I was waiting for our band to get succesful.
Last night hadn't gone very well, song writing wise. We all had a good laugh trying to forget about Mel. But as for songs, so far we didn't even have one lyric.
Mikey sat down opposite me and had a huuuuuuuuuuuuge smile on his face. Finally I looked up and asked "What is it Mikey?"
"I've written a song!" Mikey told me proudly.
I stared at him "All the instruments aswell?"
He pouted "Do you have to be so technical? No, I've written some LYRICS."
He pushed an A4 notepad towards me. I picked it up and raised my eye-brows as I read...
"I said I'd never forget your face
vaulted away inside my head
and memories never seem to fade
you were the best part of my life:my last regret
What a beautiful wedding! What a beautiful wedding!" says a bridesmaid to a waiter.
And yes, but what a shame, what a shame the poor groom's bride is a whore.
All I wanted to say
And all I gotta do
Who'd I do this for
Hey, me or you
And all I wanted to say
And all I gotta do
Who'd I do this for
Hey, me or you
Oh, all I want to know
All I want"
I would continue with Mikey's song but you get the idea.
"Mikey," I told him gently "This is great, but it's not exactly original, is it?"
"What do you mean?"
"I mean," I sighed "Someone just stole our song. We're a bit pissed off, right?"
"Yes."
"Well you can't take parts of other peoples songs and put them together!" I told him, handing him his book back "Nice try though Mikes."
He picked up his book, pulled a face and then left the room again. Returning my attention to the newspaper, I noticed a job I could take. A job in a comic book store. I read comic books nearly all the time, I could easily survive being surrounded by them all day long. And I'd be getting paid for it...
So I phoned up. And they said I could have the job.
That night we band rehearsal again. Luckily for the band, one of us had been working very hard.
"I wrote a song!" Ray told us, the minute he got into band practice.
"Are you sure?" I asked "Mikey reckoned he had too."
"Shut up!" Mikey snapped.
Ray handed me the book. I smiled and told him "Yeah, this is great. You wrote it yourself right?"
"Of course I did. I don't have a title so far."
"What about..." I thought about it.
"Oh my god guys!" Frank interupted "I never told you what I do for a living, so I will now-"
"That's a great song title!" I yelled "'I Never Told You What I Do For A Living'!"
Frank pouted "Well yeah... But still. Anyway, I got a job in a bar!"
"Why did you need to tell us?" Matt asked, throwing him a weird look.
"Well it's a good thing he did," Mikey smiled "Because no we have a good title."
For the next few hours the others all began working together on getting the music right while I worked on the vocals.
