Lindsey’s POV

“Bye darling! Have a good first day!” my mum called out from the car, I looked around frantically to see if anyone had heard her, luckily, there didn’t seem to be many people around, and the ones who were there were all completely absorbed in conversations with their friends.

Okay, stay calm, you can do this, I thought as I walked into my new school, at least I know someone here. I smiled as I thought of Mikey, but I knew we wouldn’t be in any of the same classes, he was in the year above me.

“Lindsey!” called a familiar voice from the parking lot. I turned around to see Mikey getting out of a pretty beaten up car. He was standing with an older boy who looked quite similar to him, who had his arms around a small girl with black and green hair.

“Hey Mikey,” I said with a small smile.

“Guys, this is Lindsey, Lindsey, this is my brother, Gerard, and my friend, Sarah,” he introduced us.

“Hey,” I said, smiling warmly at them.

A small body came flying towards us and crashed into Gerard, knocking him to the ground.

“And that retard is called Frank, and I am quite embarrassed to say that I know him,” Mikey laughed.

We watched Frank and Gerard wrestle each other for a while until Sarah pulled them apart.

“You two are idiots, can you not go five seconds without getting all dirty?” Sarah asked while brushing the dirt off Gerard.

“Not when you’re around at least,” he said to her with a devilish grin.

“Not what I meant,” she frowned.

“Wow guys, that made it a bit awkward,” said a tall boy with a massive afro, as he and a girl with long dark hair walked up to us. The girl walked past us and up to Frank, she placed a light kiss of his cheek before laughing at him.

“That’s Kirrah,” Mikey said, gesturing to the girl who had just kissed to short dude, “and this giant afro with a body growing out of it is what we call... Ray!”

The bell rang.

“Hey, uh, is anyone else here in year ten? Because I have no idea where I’m supposed to be,” I asked.

“I am!” yelled Frank enthusiastically.

“So am I, but it’s my first day here as well, so I won’t be much help,” laughed Kirrah.
“Okay then! Come on midget, you’re showing me around!” I teased him.

They all just laughed as we walked into the school, Gerard muttered something, it sounded like “oh god, good luck kid.”

What did he mean by that?
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
“No! There is absolutely no way that I am letting you show them around the school! Anyone but you!” yelled the lady behind the office counter.
“Aaaw but Mrs. Belle, they already know me!” Frank complained.
“I don’t care! Remember what happened last time we let you show a student around?!” she said as she shuddered.
“But she called my best friend an emo freak! I had to do something!” Frank yelled back.
“So you hid in her locker and jumped out to scare her? Her parents complained and sent her to a different school!” she hissed, “and what about the time you filled James Smiths locker with pills and other... things? You cannot be trusted, you are not showing them around!”
She sent Frank away. She glared at us when she saw us laughing.
“Just one moment girls, I’m going to get someone who can be trusted to show you around,” She said as she walked out the door.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

I heard the click of high heels on the cold hard floor, we turned around to see a girl with bleach blond hair, a skirt that was so short that it may as well be a belt, and oh yeah, she looked like she had been attacked by a packet of Doritos. Her lips curved into an obviously faked smile as she walked over to us.

“Hi I’m Chantelle,” she introduced herself, “I’ll be showing you around today.”

“Oh lovely,” I replied, my voice dripping with sarcasm, I could already tell I wasn’t going to get on with this fake, plastic girl.

She narrowed her eyes at me.

I grinned back at her.

“Come on,” she hissed as she turned around and walked out the door.

“This is A block, this is where English, History and Geography are taught, C block is the cafeteria. The next is D block, that’s maths and science. Then B block, that’s art, music and that sort of weird stuff,” she said.

“Ok, so that’s where Ray said to go if we got lost at lunch,” said Kirrah.

“Ew! You’re friends with those freaks?! And that freaky midget, Frank! He’s so like, blah!” exclaimed Chantelle, she must have heard her say Ray’s name.

“Hey! That’s my boyfriend you’re talking about!” Kirrah yelled as she pushed Chantelle to the ground.

“Oh you did not just do that!” she yelled as she got up. She stepped up to Kirrah and bitch slapped her across the face.

I couldn’t stand this bitch! Putting all my strength behind me, I launched myself at her, knocking us both to the ground. Kirrah laughed as she helped me up.

“Don’t ever hurt my friends, or you will pay,” I hissed.

“Find your own way around you stupid emo freaks!” she hissed as she got up and walked away, “oh yeah, and you’ve made a huge mistake by annoying me.” She stormed off.

We looked at each other, and started burst into laughter.

“What a bitch!” Kirrah said once we finally stopped laughing.

“Okay, well it says here that we have English now, but there’s only five more minutes until the end of the period, then we have music, so, you wanna just hang around until music?” I asked.
“Yeah sure,” Kirrah answered with a smile.

“So, how long have you and Frank been together?” I asked, trying to make conversation.

“Only one week, I haven’t known them for that long, only a few more days than you have,” she answered, “what’s going on with you and Mikey?”

“Uh well, I don’t really know, I really like him, but I don’t know if he likes me back, and well, apart from the day that we first met, he hasn’t really seemed all that interested in me,” I gushed.

“Not interested in you?! Have you not noticed the way he’s always staring at you? He looks like a lovesick puppy whenever you’re around him!” she laughed.

“Really?” I asked, I couldn’t believe it! He liked me?

“Yeah, it’s so obvious, you really didn’t notice?” she asked.

The bell rang and we walked up the stairs to the music rooms.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Frank’s POV
Kirrah! Lindsey!” I yelled, they were in my music class! Finally, I wasn’t a loner in this class!
“Frankie! You never told me you played!” said Kirrah.
“Yeah midget, what do you play?” asked Lindsey.
“I play guitar, and I’m not a midget, I’m just vertically challenged,” I laughed, “so you guys play?”
“Yeah I sing and play bass, I was in a band with some friends before I moved here,” Lindsey answered.
“I play a little guitar, but I’m not very good,” said Kirrah.
“Well how about I help you?” I asked Kirrah. She leaned in towards me and whispered in my ear.
“Hmm, maybe we could do some... private lessons at your house,” she said quietly.
“You’re not that good at being quiet, I heard that. Someone get me a bucket! I’m gonna be sick!” laughed Lindsey as she pretended to gag.
“Oh, oops,” Kirrah said, her face turning bright pink.
Frank just kissed her on the top of her nose and laughed.
“Okay class, we are starting a new topic today! Composition, you are going to work in groups of three or four to write and perform an original song,” said the teacher as he walked into the class room.
“Uh Mr. Bryar? It’s Kirrah’s and Lindsey’s first day here,” I said.
“Oh well, welcome girls, what do you play?” he asked as he smile warmly at them, Mr. Bryar was my favourite teacher in the entire school, he was really chilled and basically didn’t care what you were doing as long as it was music related.
“I play guitar, but not very well,” answered Kirrah.
“I sing and play bass,” Lindsey said.
“Awesome, well you guys already seem to know Frank, so you guys can be grouped with him,” he smiled and walked away.
We went to get our instruments and sat outside, just talking, getting to know Lindsey better, she was quite... funny, she had taken to calling me midget, but oh well, I didn’t mind.
I was shocked when the bell rang for lunch. That lesson went so fast!
“Come on guys, we’re going to the art rooms,” I said as we put our instruments away.
“I need to go buy my lunch,” said Kirrah.
“Not a good idea, give your money to Ray, no-body would dare do anything to him, but if one of us goes in there... well, just ask Sarah,” I said quickly, stopping her from getting some ones disgusting lunch dumped on her.
“Uh okay?” she said as we walked in the door to the art room.
“Oh yeah, Lindsey, there’s nothing in this god-damned school that isn’t made of some sort of animal,” I said.
“Okay then, lucky I brought my own lunch today,” she laughed.
“Hey guys!” Mikey yelled. His eyes wandered over to Lindsey, it was so obvious that he liked her, why didn’t he just pick up the courage and ask her out?
“Mikey, would you tear your eyes away from Lindsey, wipe the drool from your chin and tell me what you want for lunch,” laughed Ray. Mikey looked so embarrassed, I had to laugh.
Gerard’s POV
There was something different about the hamburger I had for lunch, it just tasted... different. I looked over at Sarah, and all I could feel was love, but then, all of a sudden, nothing. I didn’t feel anything, I didn’t feel happy, I didn’t feel sad, I didn’t even feel the love I usually felt for Sarah, I knew that I should have been worried about this, but I just couldn’t. I couldn’t feel anything. I knew I should be panicking, but I just felt oddly calm, I felt absolutely no emotions.
Sarah’s POV
What was going on? Gee, Ray, Mikey and Kirrah all had... well, nothing. Their faces were completely devoid of any emotion.
“Uh, Frank? Lindsey? Do you guys know what’s going on with the others?” I asked, we all stared at them, they were completely oblivious.
“Guys! Stop it! It’s not funny!” Frank yelled, he looked worried.
Someone came crashing through the door.
“Mr. Bryar?” Frank said.
“Oh thank god! You didn’t eat it!” he exclaimed.
“Eat what?” I asked, this was so confusing!
“They- they put these... things into the food from the cafeteria, this company that calls themselves ‘Better Living Industries’ These pills that take all emotion from you, basically leaving you like the living dead,” he explained shakily.
“Better Living?” I asked, “that’s the company my mother works for!”
“Come with me, you need to see something,” he said.
“But what about them?” Kirrah asked, gesturing to the others.
“Don’t worry, they won’t go anywhere unless they are told,” he said sadly. I felt fear course through me, what was happening?
We followed him into the cafeteria. I was expecting the usual deafening noise, insults being yelled at us and food being thrown at us ‘freaks’ but no, there was nothing, everyone just sat there, not talking, not moving, and apart from breathing, showing no signs of life.
He led us into the kitchen. I gasped. There were boxes upon boxes of pills, with the logo - BL/ind, on them.
“Oh, they’re drugging us? And we weren’t affected because...” I trailed off.
“Because they don’t sell and vegan food, so we didn’t eat anything from here, and we didn’t take the pills!” Frank exclaimed.
We just stood there for a few minutes, trying to wrap our minds around what was happening.
Mr. Bryar turned to us.
“Look, you guys need to take your friends, get as many supplies as you can, and get out of here! Go through the desert up into the mountains, wait for me on top of the first mountain for three days, there’s a small cabin up there, if I don’t make it, you’re on your own,” he said as he ran out the door.
“We need to get the others!” I yelled.
We broke into a run, racing through the blank faces of the rest of the students.
“Gee! I called as we broke through the doors to the art room. They were still just sitting there, with a vacant expression on their faces.
“Hey! Mr. Bryar said they won’t do anything unless they’re told to,” said Lindsey, “Mikey! Get up!”
Mikey stood.
“It worked! Ray! Gerard! Kirrah! Get up!” she yelled.
They did as they were told.
“Ray, Gerard, Mikey, Kirrah, follow us!” yelled Frank.
We walked quickly to the front gate where our cars were waiting for us, Gee, Mikey, Ray and Kirrah were following us like zombies.
“Uh... which car?” asked Frank.
“Well, Ray’s is the biggest, and it seems the newest, we might be able to get the others later,” I answered.
“Okay, everybody get in the car!” I yelled, the ‘zombies’ for lack of better word, all shuffled mindlessly into the car.
“And where do you think you’re going?” asked a rough voice from behind me.
I recognised that voice. It was a voice that I had heard every day until I was seven, a voice which disappeared from my life, and I hadn’t heard since.
“Korse,” I whispered.
“Hello, daughter,” he replied.
