Bob Bryar looked up at Mikey with cautious eyes; ‘’You want me to find your wife’s parents?’’ he asked. He’d been confused when Mikey had called him, wanting to have him visit his home late at night.
‘’Yeah, Bob, I need your help – I need them found, and soon,’’ Mikey spoke quickly, ‘’but I need you to keep this quiet, you know? Between us…’’ Mikey spoke softly,
‘’Mikey, you know I have to report any criminal activity that I see.’’ Bob cut in,
‘’I just need this to be done, before tomorrow. C’mon, Bob – you know I helped you to identify that John Doe four years ago…’’ Mikey preened.
‘’Fine – I’ll look. Write down Lauren’s full name – her maiden name, of course – and I can track to see what he parents are doing, their address..’’ Bob stood up, and Mikey grabbed a pen and paper from the coffee table, writing down the details and handing the piece of paper to Bob.
‘’Email me what you find, I’ll be awake all night waiting.’’ Mikey finished, ‘’Thank you, man – anything you need after this is fair game.’’ Mikey nodded in Bob’s direction as he followed him to the front door.
‘’Sure, Mikey, I’ll do this as quickly as I can.’’ Bob wandered down to his police cruiser, getting behind the wheel and trying to think of reasons why Mikey wanted to track down Lauren’s parents.
Mikey himself had finished packing his and Dahlia’s clothes, setting the single suitcase that he had packed down on the sofa, Dahlia was in the kitchen, perched on the stool, her unicorn clutched to her chest as she cried softly, afraid that she had somehow made her father angry enough to take them away, to punish her. She would never see her mother again – and the thought terrified her young mind as she cried.
‘’Dahlia, we’re going to find your mother soon. We’re going to stop her from doing something stupid.’’ Mikey entered the kitchen; Dahlia lifted her head from the soft, worn fur of the unicorn,
‘’But mommy was just going to kill monsters – aren’t monsters supposed to be killed?’’,
‘’Yes…but they aren’t monsters, Dahlia, your mom has got it wrong.’’ Mikey spoke angrily.
‘’But mommy doesn’t lie…maybe you’re wrong about them…’’ Dahlia reasoned,
‘’I’m right, believe your father,’’ Mikey spoke through gritted teeth, going to make himself a coffee, and then sitting down on the opposite stool. ‘’I’m very angry with your mother, because she lied,’’ Mikey tried to explain, and Dahlia frowned even more, not opening her mouth to speak, though. Mikey just shook his head softly, ‘’but it’s not your fault – you’re not the reason I’m angry.’’ He smiled weakly.
His own brother had lured his wife away from the house to commit some murderous mission – it made his skin crawl to think that Gerard was out there, a dangerous criminal who could hurt Lauren. He had forgiven Gerard for shooting him – but to protect his family, he would send him back to prison, if he had to.
Mikey looked at Dahlia for a few moments before, ‘’I’ll take you to Grandma’s house, and I’ll get your mother back.’’ He decided.
Bob sent the email at midnight, and Mikey received it ten minutes later, after Dahlia had fallen asleep on the sofa, and he read the email with hungry eyes, smiling to himself – he would find Lauren and get Gerard locked back up, where he couldn’t hurt anyone else ever again.
Gerard opened his eyes as the morning light hit his eyelids – he stretched his body under the thin sheet of his bed, sitting up and glancing around the room, trying to keep his eyes open as they adjusted to the light. ‘’Morning,’’ he heard Lauren say.
‘’Good morning,’’ He murmured, pushing his hair away from his eyes as he stood. Lauren was pacing the hotel room – dressed in a pair of black jeans and a red t-shirt. ‘’Ah, you’re dressed like a normal person today.’’ He laughed at her offended expression as she turned to look at him.
‘’There is nothing wrong with what I normally wear – but I figured that I should dress down, in order to blend in and not stand out.’’ Lauren explained,
‘’Good idea,’’ Gerard eyed her, pulling up his jeans from their spot on the floor. Lauren rolled her eyes, checking her cell phone;
‘’Mikey hasn’t called…shit, I think he knows that something’s up.’’ Lauren kicked the side of the bed she had slept on, ‘’we’ve gotta get moving....’’ she quickly spoke, stuffing her discarded red dress into her suitcase,
‘’He doesn’t know where your parents live – why worry? We’ve got this room for a few more hours.’’ Gerard reasoned.
‘’I don’t want to give him a chance to find out, fuck, maybe this was a bad idea…’’ Lauren frowned deeply, sitting down on her bed and cradling her head in her hands.
‘’No, this is a great idea - you convinced me last night. I want to kill your fuckin’ parents with you – just think, we’re doing humanity a service – not that humanity deserves a fuckin’ thing – but still.’’ Gerard walked in front of her – laying his hands on her shoulders; ‘’do you want to give them a chance to hurt another kid like they hurt you?’’,
‘’No,’’ Lauren lifted her head from her hands,
‘’Well, then this is the right thing to do,’’ Gerard smiled softly, Lauren stared back at him,
‘’Why did you change so much?’’ she asked,
‘’What do you mean?’’ Gerard looked confused at her question.
‘’You used to be so cold – now you’re comforting me? This isn’t right, Gerard. I shouldn’t even be here – I should be with Mikey, letting the hate for them eat me away until there’s nothing left. You’re meant to be killing people that you want to kill, because you’re meant to be free, doing what you want.’’ Lauren’s eyes were cold and unfeeling at that moment – which caused Gerard to feel a little uneasy, for whatever reason, he was used to her being full of life. Devoid of life, she was as cold as he had once been.
‘’I’d just gotten out of prison then, and I was still under the rule of that fucker…Lauren, you’re meant to do this, as much as you think you can’t or shouldn’t – at the end of this you’ll be free. You’ll be whole, just like you wanted to be.’’ Gerard spoke, his dark eyes staring down at her. ‘’And I’ll be another memory, and you can live like you’ve always lived.’’ He finished. Lauren sighed heavily, standing back up;
‘’Let’s go. I want this finished, and then I want to go back home,’’ she pressed, although right then she wasn’t sure whether she could face Mikey when she got back.
