Dahlia loved her Grandma, but she didn’t want to leave home. As Mikey drove her to Donna’s house – she refused to speak to him, angry and upset because she didn’t understand, and he wouldn’t explain to her. Just as they stopped, she spoke up; ‘’Mommy would’ve told me.’’,
‘’I’m not your mother – there are some things that you can’t know, Dahlia – because you’re too young. ‘’ Mikey tried to explain, but his anger at Lauren was surpassing his reasoning. Her parent’s number was burning a hole in his pocket, and he was just waiting to give them a call when he was close to their home. He wanted to confront Lauren, and ask her why she would go behind his back and try to commit a murder – why she would murder her parents with his brother.

Gerard glanced at Lauren from behind his sunglasses; Lauren was silently staring out at the seemingly endless stretch of road from the window of the diner they had stopped at, she leaned forwards, with the diner’s menu in her hands, reading the choices slowly.
Lauren placed the menu back on the table and picked at the hem of her t-shirt;
‘’Do you think that Mikey will come looking for us?’’,
‘’Yeah, I think he will. But we’ll get there before him....’’ Gerard assured her, and himself, in turn.
‘’But he’ll know that we killed them....’’ Lauren sighed,
‘’Who the fuck cares? He’s your husband – he should keep his mouth shut…But, just to be sure – I want you to say that this was my idea, okay?’’ he glanced at her, awaiting her answer.
‘’What if I want to take credit for it?’’,
‘’Then you could lose both your husband and your daughter – I’m sure that you don’t wanna lose either of them, so you’ll blame it on me.’’ He pressed.
‘’Mikey’s too smart, he’ll see through it – I know he will.’’ Lauren thought of her husband, working at all hours, striving to keep his patients safe and healthy. ‘’I guess I think he’s smarter than me....’’ she sighed, ‘’I don’t know whether it’s true or not – but it’s how I feel.’’.
‘’Just say it was me. I’m already the fuckin’ devil in his eyes…’’ Gerard frowned deeply, reaching for a cigarette and lighting it, pulling the ashtray over to himself.
‘’He still loves you – you’re his brother.’’ Lauren stated, although she was trying to think of a time when Mikey had actually said that to her – he had told her that he cared, but a part of her knew that Mikey was still struggling to forgive Gerard for shooting him.
‘’He loves the old Gerard – the one who wasn’t fucked up and killed people. Now I’m just unrecognizable to him… six years ago, I saw it, I saw the way he looked and me and I hated it – I hated him for looking at me like that, I think that’s part of why I shot him.’’ Gerard took a long drag on the cigarette, and then let the smoke drift from between his lips.
‘’You do feel some things – don’t you… I mean, I know they say that killers can’t feel emotions, but I think its bullshit.’’,
‘’I feel some things stronger than others, I guess – but I don’t feel guilt, don’t have a conscience. Nothing to tell me when to stop, that’s the thing, I guess I was tired of having the prospect of being like everyone else hanging over me – the nine to five job, the big house, fuckin’ mortgages and shit – so I decided to destroy any chance of me ever having those things. I was angry at everyone, and I just wanted the expectations to stop. I wanted to kill because it excited and thrilled me.’’ Gerard shrugged a little, staring across at Lauren; ‘’does that answer your question?’’,
‘’Yeah, it does… Do you think I’m pathetic for getting married? For getting a mortgage?’’ she smiled a little, and Gerard laughed lightly;
‘’No – I think you did the right thing in just letting me leave and not going to kill your parents right then. You wouldn’t have Dali if you had gone with me - Mikey would’ve stayed alone in Maryland.’’,
‘’Mikey wouldn’t have been alone… He would’ve found someone soon enough… He has a knack for it.’’ Lauren spoke placidly, her tone dropping to a seething hilt.
‘’What do ya mean?’’ Gerard glanced over at her again.
‘’A year after Dali was born he had an affair – well, he slept with one of his co-workers… I found out, even though I wasn’t trying to find anything. She saw me and just told me what happened – I confronted Mikey and he told me, begging me not to leave, and that he was sorry.’’ Lauren’s eyes narrowed slightly, ‘’I just…it’s like I wasn’t good enough for him – wasn’t a good enough wife for him.’’ She bit her lip, staring straight ahead, ‘’I asked him and he said that it was stress. I told him that I was stressed, but I didn’t fuck other people, and then he got angry and he hit me…just a slap, but fuck me I felt it.’’.
‘’He hit you?’’,
‘’Yeah, and I threatened to leave. He convinced me to stay somehow…And I still loved him…’’ her voice had gone down, almost to a murmur, and Gerard realized that she was afraid of him seeing her as weak – because of what had happened six years ago, she was determined to seem like she was strong and willful, which she was – but she was still only human. Maybe she thought that staying with Mikey was a weak move – but he thought of it as a better card to play than breaking the family they had built apart. It would’ve been Mikey that had broken everything – maybe he had, but they both hadn’t realized it yet.
The waitress finally appeared with a sunny smile, and took down their orders, and when she left, Gerard cleared his throat; ‘’Do you still love him?’’ he asked,
‘’I don’t know what I feel anymore…’’ Lauren sighed heavily.
