Lil Bubbi was anxious to see Christianna. He loved her with all of his little heart, and he ached when she was gone. He was a 5 year old dachshund who was slightly overweight. He was black with brown patches. Around his left eye was a white patch of fur. His tail wagged furiously whenever he saw Christianna. He loved her so much, he watched over her as best as he could.
As she came through the apartment door, he greeted her with a bark and a wagging tail. “Hello there Lil Bubbi. How was your day Love?” Lil Bubbi barked and looked back at his now broken chew toy. “I’ll get you a new one soon mkkay babe? I promise”. The dog barked and jumped up onto her lap as she sat in the chair outside on the balcony.
She was thinking. She always did when in this chair. She called it her thinking chair…she thought in this chair whether she intended to or not.
She began thinking about her past, what had brought her to this point today. Her mother had been a druggie. As some had told her, her mother couldn’t keep her facts straight. She was an impulsive pathological liar. She would do anything for dope: lie, cheat, scam, steal. Nothing but the high mattered to her. Her half brother, Cayden’s father had died in some kind of drug deal incident not long after he was born. He was told by their aunt(who both Cayden and Christianna went to live with) that he hadn’t paid up on his drugs so he was shot and found dead at the scene. Her dad simply hadn’t wanted her, said her mother to her aunt. Her mother simply couldn’t care for them, reason being why they were both sent to live with their aunt. They lived there until she was 9 and Cayden was 10. Their aunt was absolutely gorgeous and incredibly generous. She gave up her life to raise her sisters kids. She loved them both as if they were her own. Christianna loved her aunt. There was no one she loved more in the world, except for her brother. He had become her best friend. They did everything together. They played Cowboys and Indians to playing House. They helped each other with homework and always had each other’s backs. They were inseparable.
When she was eight Christianna witnessed a murder. She and her brother had been playing hide-n-seek in some unknown alley. She turned a corner expecting to find Cayden, and instead found man and a woman. The man held a gun up to the woman, who was quite frail. When he saw Christianna, he pulled the trigger. The woman dropped dead. Christianna remained frozen with fear. But then, the man stepped forward and she ran faster than a bat out of hell.
He chased after her, firing his gun at her. He shot, and grazed her right arm, but Christianna kept running. She frantically searched for her brother as she ran. She had some kind of luck, she saw him just ahead of her. Thinking she was running towards him to tag him, he ran too. It wasn’t until he heard a gunshot that he realized he and his sister were in danger.
They ran out into the street, so that the world could see their danger. Cayden and Christianna both managed to cross the street before oncoming traffic came. The man was forced to stop, as he watched the two kids run with all their might.
That little runt saw everything, he thought. Would she blab to someone? Would she keep it to herself? He would find out soon enough.
After Christianna witnessed that murder, her life changed. She was often to scared to fall asleep alone, so she would crawl into her brother’s bed for comfort. Cayden was fine with it, but he worried about his sister. Christianna had wanted to tell her aunt, but she and Cayden hadn’t been allowed in those alleys…and her simple stupid excuse for having being shot was that someone had driven by and mistakenly shot her. So she never should have witnessed what she did. But she had, and she had to deal with it,
After a few weeks, she thought she was doing better. And then, on her 9th birthday everything changed. It was like any other day, except it was her birthday.
Cayden and Christianna were at school. When they came home, their aunt wasn’t present. They assumed she was getting Christianna a gift, so they had no reason to worry. Then hours passed. They had wanted to celebrate Christiannas’ birthday together as a family. It was now 8:30 and aunt Beth wasn’t anywhere in sight. They began to become worried. At 9:30 they couldn’t think of what to do, but call the police.
Everything went downhill from there. Aunt Beth was named as a missing person. The police couldn’t figure anything out. The only thing they could do was put the kids in foster care.
Only a few days after being placed in a foster home, Cayden went missing as well. Christianna’s heart broke into a million pieces. Someone had picked him up during school and no one had seen him since.
Soon Christianna was sent everywhere…no foster care system wanted her…she continued to have nervous breakdowns. She woke up screaming from nightmares. She wrote letters to detectives to please bring back her brother. No one listened. No one seemed to care. The next years were blurry from all the tears she shed. And because of all those tears lost, she promised herself that she would find him…that one day she would see her brother once more. No matter what.
At age fourteen she had a job…at age seventeen she became her own guardian and her own provider. Her neighbor had a new liter of puppies. When she saw him she fell in love. He was the cutest puppy in the world. Lil Bubbi has been happily living with her since then, five years ago.
