I paced around the living room, Frank watching me from the couch. The girls had gone to bed about an hour ago, and it was now 1:00 in the morning. Neither of us could sleep. I was too worried that Amy would show up and do something. I doubt that she would tonight though, with both me and Frank here. I don’t know why she didn’t show up earlier when the other two did. Maybe she knew that they weren’t gonna get her and they weren’t getting away.
“Gee, please sit down. You’re wearing out the carpet…” he chuckled. I did a little too. I took a step to my right, and started pacing there.
He sighed, and stood up, grabbing me by the arm.
“Frank, we’ve got to do something. I can’t live with her out there, just knowing that she could show up at any time… Gah! I wish I would have taken the girls when I had a chance…” I sat down on the couch and Frank sat beside me.
“I know you do, but you couldn’t have known what was going to happen. I don’t even think she knew what was going to happen then.” He was right.
“I know. It’s just… I don’t understand why she is doing this. Yea, she hates me, but her own daughters? I can’t imagine ever wanting to hurt your kids, for any reason.”
“Me neither…” he said. He leaned in and kissed my temple and put his head on my shoulder. We stayed like that for a few minutes until I heard footsteps. Soon, I saw Danni standing in the hall door.
“What’s wrong?” I asked her. She shrugged, and walked over and sat down next to me.
“I’ll leave you two alone,” Frank said as he got up and left the room. No sooner than I heard our bedroom door close, Danni climbed into my arms and broke down. I wrapped my arms around her as she cried into my shoulder.
“What’s going on?” I asked her.
“I don’t know, just everything. I mean, why is this happening? Why is mom trying to hurt me and Nikki? It... It makes no sense. Well, I know why she hurt me...” she told me.
“You know? Why?” I asked her, a little shocked.
“Well... I told her that I was... bi,” she said.
“That makes sense. She hates me doesn’t she?” I smiled.
She laughed quietly and nuzzled her face in my chest. After a few seconds of silence, she let go of me and sighed, “But it still doesn’t make any sense about why she would want to hurt Nikki… Nikki was always mom’s favorite.”
I shook my head, “I don’t know… Maybe she’s mentally unstable. That’s the only reason I can think of. It’s the only reason that makes sense.”
She sighed, “I don’t know… I feel bad for Nikki,” she paused, turning away from me and looking down at the floor, “Sometimes I feel like if I would have told her about what mom and Josh were doing to me, she would have done anything in her power to save me. Though, at the time, I thought that she would have been on their side…” she sighed, “This is all my fault,” she put her head in her hands.
I shook my head, “Dan… It’s not your fault. None of this is your fault.”
She looked me in the eyes, “It sure feels like it’s all my fault…”
I opened my mouth to say something when I heard footsteps in the hall. I looked up just in time to see Nikki walk slowly out of the darkness. She stood, leaning against the doorframe. I could tell that she had been crying.
I stood up and walked over to her, wrapping my arms around her tiny frame. She buried her face in my shoulder and I felt her tears through my shirt.
When she had finally stopped crying, she looked up at me. I could see all her emotions in her eyes. She shook her head and quickly looked away from me, “I couldn’t sleep… and I could hear you talking…” I watched as she gazed at Danni, who was still sitting on the couch.
I let go of her and Nikki walked across the room to Danni. She sat down next to her sister and wrapped her arms around her, “Dan, it’s not your fault. It’s mine. I should have seen what they were doing to you. I should have been there to protect you,” she paused, “I am your bigger sister after all.”
Danni smiled, “I love you Nik.”
Nikki nodded and smiled, “I love you too. I always have and I always will.”
I smiled and walked over to them. I wrapped my arms around both of them, “I love you guys, and I promise that no matter what happens, I will always be here when you need me. I won’t let your mom take you ever again.”
Danni smiled, “I love you dad.”
Nikki smiled and nodded. I knew it was hard for her to tell me that she loved me. She had only done it once before, and that was when she was in the hospital, with a lot of drugs in her system. Even though she couldn’t say it, I knew that she loved me. She was my little girl, and I was her dad.
