Nikki's POV
One Week Later
I rolled over and looked at the clock; 6:03. I sighed and rolled back over, away from it. I had been up all night. I haven’t slept a bit this whole week. I was scared shitless that something was going to happen, and my dad wouldn’t be able to do anything about it. So scared that she was going to get me and Danni... So scared...
“Gerard!” I heard Frank yell. What was going on?
“Gerard! Get in here!” I heard him yell once again. I quickly got out of bed and went down the hallway to where I saw Frank and my dad standing in the living room. I got there just in time to hear the conversation.
“They got her! They got Amy! They found her outside Jersey in a hotel. I don’t know how, but they did!”
I felt like crying. This big weight felt like it was lifted off of me. I felt so relieved; so safe. I could walk outside without cowering in fear at every little sound. I could.... Live again...
“Nikki?” I heard my dad ask. I looked up and smiled at him. I ran over and jumped on him, wrapping my arms around his neck.
“Everything’s all right now, Nik...” he whispered to me. My smile grew as I felt tears coming to my eyes.
A few seconds later, I felt another set of arms around me, I glanced behind me and smiled, it was Danni. Tears were falling from her eyes and she was smiling. It had been a long time since I had seen her smile like that… Seeing her, made me smile ever bigger.
Our dad kissed both of us on the forehead, “Now we don’t have to worry anymore…”
He let go us and turned to Frank who was still jumping up and down with excitement, “Frank, I think now would be the prefect time to talk to them about our plan.”
Frank smiled wider and almost screamed, like a little child that was getting a new toy, “Really? I thought you said you didn’t want to because of Amy?”
My dad laughed, “She’s locked up now.”
Frank nodded and pulled everyone into the kitchen. We all sat down around the table. I didn’t know about Danni, but I was extremely confused about what plan Frank had…
When we were all sitting down, my dad started talking, “Frank wants to move. He thinks that we need a bigger place, a place where you guys can have your own room. I agree. So, how would you guys like to move to Portland?”
I smiled, “Portland, Maine? That would be awesome!”
Frank shook his head, “Not Maine, Oregon.”
My smile faded, “But… Why? Oregon and New York are the exact same! Cold and rainy…”
My dad sighed, “It would put us closer to Los Angeles, and I know you’ve always wanted to go there.”
Danni smiled, “I would move just for that reason.”
Nikki shook her head, “I don’t really have a choice, do I? I either move with you or what?”
Frank smiled, “Your other option is to go live with your uncle Mikey in New Jersey.”
Danni shook her head, “I would rather go to Portland.”
I sighed, thinking through the pros and cons of moving to Oregon. One of the big things that stood out to me was the fact that it would be easier to have a fresh start. I would be able to have friends and not have to necessarily tell them about what happened here. I smiled and nodded, “I guess moving there wouldn’t be that bad.”
Danni smiled at me and wrapped her arms around me, “We’ll be able to start fresh.”
I turned to my dad and Frank, “When do we move?”
“Well, we want to wait until you finish with this school year,” Frank said.
I nodded, “That sounds perfect,” I smiled.
Danni smiled, “So when do we start packing?”
**
I walked to the fridge and grabbed a bottle of orange juice. I opened it and took a sip. I smiled and put the lid back on. I looked out the window and smiled wider, ever since I had learned that my mom was caught earlier that morning, it seemed like the rest of the day was reflecting my emotions.
This was the best weather we had had for a long time, and it was mid-March. It was bright and sunny, with no chance of rain, and as far as I could see, there were no clouds. I looked down at the clock above the sink; 2:47.
I smiled and walked outside. I sat down on the steps of our house, enjoying the nice weather. About five minutes after I sat down, my dad and Frank pulled up in the driveway. They smiled at me, “We got you some more orange juice, and some oranges,” my dad laughed.
Frank nodded, “And we’re having pasta for dinner tonight.”
I smiled, “That sounds delicious.”
I watched as they grabbed the few bags out of the car and carried them inside. I moved aside while they walked up the stairs. I couldn’t tell if it was the day or what, but it seemed like we were all getting along. We were becoming a family, again.
I glanced at the corner of the street, waiting for the paper girl. She was the only person that I had really become close with after what happened. Her name was Ebony. I told her everyday that I wanted to steal her name. I laughed at the thought.
To my surprise, instead of seeing Ebony on a bike with our paper, it was someone new. Someone I had never seen before. I tried not to stare but he was extremely good-looking.
He had short black hair that looked like it hadn’t been brushed or combed in months. He had on a light blue Fall Out Boy shirt, with, what appeared to be skinny jeans. On his feet, he was wearing classic black and white checkered Vans. I instantly felt a connection with this guy, and I was determined to know who he was.
As he got closer to our house, I stood up and walked to the curb. He slowed down to a stop right in front of me. He smiled and handed me a paper, “Here you go, Miss.”
I couldn’t help but giggle, “Thanks.”
He smiled, “Have I seen you before?”
I shook my head, “I don’t believe so.”
He nodded, “I’m Dustin.”
I smiled, “I’m Nikki.”
He nodded again and smiled, “Well, I should probably get going and finish my route. Can’t keep people waiting on their paper.
I laughed, “Definitely not.”
“Maybe I’ll see you around?” He asked, slowly peddling away from me.
I nodded and stood there watching as he continued down the street delivering papers. I watched him until he turned the corner and I couldn’t see him anymore.
I turned around and headed towards the house, smiling. Dustin. I couldn’t get him off my mind… I really hoped that I would see him again.
