It’s no good, she won’t talk Mary told the German with a sigh.
Then make her he replied simply.
Mary’s face darkened.
I’ll do no such thing!
Then Mary,
he said with a dangerous look; I’ll do it myself.
Mary shot him a scolding glance.
You will not,
you shall stay here
stay silent and...
She paused wondering if she had the nerve to continue.
The German gave her a look which said it all; he dared her to say it.
She did, you will stay patient.
God help me now she thought while she waited for his anger to surface as her words sunk in.
Patient!?
He spat,
I have been more than patient,
7 days Mary....7 damnable days.
He stood up and began to pace the floor.
3 of those days he continued...
I have had to send away the priest!
The wedding should have gone ahead a week ago.
He strode over to Mary, stopping merely a foot away from her.
If this wedding doesn’t happen, then we shall all stay down here forever.
Is that what you want?
Mary said nothing.
Well? He barked.
Mary glared at him
Don’t you dare!
Don’t you think you have punished me enough?
By now she had truly lost her patience with his demands.
He laughed at her.
Punished you?
What ridiculous things to say,
but then...
You always were self centred.
Why do you think I ended up here in the first place?
He shot her an evil smirk.
Oh that’s right!
I remember now.....you caused my death!
He got closer to her,
close enough so that they’re noses were almost touching he gripped her shoulders roughly.
She was scared.
He could feel her trembling beneath his vice like grip; if she were alive she would surely have bruised.
He felt satisfied when he felt her fear-he thrived on fear.
Do you remember that day?
He hissed at her before continuing in a slightly softer, yet still fearful tone.
February 14th 1779.
He paused as he remembered clearly in his mind the events of that day.
I had fought long and hard,
I was a strong fearsome warrior.....
You were a loathsome monster! Mary interrupted.
And how would you have known that?
You were merely a child,
you had never laid eyes on me before.
I might not have seen you but I had heard all the stories she replied defensively.
No Mary,
you had heard the idle gossip of the foolish villagers.....
your fellow Americans.
He said with a vile tone when he said Americans as if the word had a sour taste.
Had I been fighting for the Americans,
would I have been painted in a more favourable light?
Mary said nothing, she had no idea, but he may have been correct.
It doesn’t really matter now he said quickly,
the main point is this; I had taken any life which crossed my path and then on that day,
I crossed the path of 2 children.....
you and your sister....
you helped them! Not only did you cause it but you watched!
Mary still stayed silent.
You promised your soul to Satan for my help in fulfilling your selfish little plot.
All though she stayed quiet she knew she were in for an unpleasant time.
By the way Mary; he still weren’t finished.
Did you ever give a single thought to why I fought so fiercely?
Why I enjoyed death so?
Mary shook her head dumbly.
My fellow countrymen and I were shipped off to America like animals by our Princes to assist the English.
I left my family behind me never knowing if I would see them again.
He paused momentarily trying to keep his emotions even; he couldn’t show his human side...Not yet.
I spent every spare second away from the battle training, pushing myself harder.
Becoming meaner, stronger and faster.
I longed to be the most feared warrior.
My years of practice paid off.
And I did achieve my goal.
If you had seen me where I started off you would never have recognised me.
He looked thoughtful for a moment more human even.
I had to change the way I dressed, the way I spoke, the way I thought.
I had to be a new man, a stranger to myself.
A stranger to everybody.
And I did it all for my family; I thought if I fought like the devil I could kill every last man on the battle field.
If there were no one to fight the war would be at an end and I could finally go back home.
This was the first time Mary had seen any glimmer of humanity in him.
She even felt a tiny prickle of remorse...the first time she had ever felt remorse.
Mary, he said quietly.
That day you pledged your soul to Satan?
She nodded.
You didn’t know but your soul automatically became chained to me.
That day of February 14th.....St Valentines day.
On that day the world celebrates love.
This is why I must make Embeth love me...why she must wed me.
He paused briefly and continued; she is pure at heart, full of kindness and compassion.
If she marries me, it will be witnessed by God, the spell will be broken...our fates altered.
Our lives restored; we will live as we would have if our lives had never ended.
In all her years of witchcraft she had never heard such a thing.
Why do you believe it?
Of all the magick, light and dark I have worked with I have never uncovered such a legend.
With all due respect Mary- books would hardly contain such a thing; I’ve been here longer than you.
She thought for a minute trying to consider the possibility of it.
That may be so, but how did you come about such a tale?
A tale? He asked incredulously.
You think I speak of some old fable?
In my dying moments I heard a thousand whispers, indecipherable to the human ear.....Which at that very time so was I.
These words grew louder and clearer by the day.
I had beautiful dreams; dreams of the date, dreams of altars...
This is why I built that altar; it is the one I saw in so many of them.
The only thing I was not told was who the girl standing at it would be.
I knew not her name, her age nor did I know her by sight.
But the day I found her up there I had felt a compelling energy pulling me.
It was like dying all over again yet without pain.
The moment I saw that wretched waif like creature my heart began to beat again as it had when I were among the living.
How else could you explain that?
Here he said excitedly as he took her hand; holding it against his chest.
Do you feel it?
He questioned in barely a whisper.
The lady gasped as she realised he were telling the truth only nodding in response to the question.
She must be my wife before the 14th he announced suddenly and rather brutally.
Do you understand?
If we miss this chance who knows when it would happen again...or if.
Mary sighed having decided she would rather not risk being stuck here any longer than necessary. She would do as asked.
There would be a wedding whether or not it brought freedom....
well then she would find out when she crossed that bridge.
Then make her he replied simply.
Mary’s face darkened.
I’ll do no such thing!
