Danni's POV

It was the weekend, and I finally convinced my dad to let me stay with Brenden. Ryan would be working until the next morning, so we had the whole house to ourselves. I knocked on the door, “Come in!” I heard my friend yell.

I opened the door, and looked around. I didn’t see Brenden. I stepped further in, and soon there was a cat circling my legs. “That’s Penguin.” I heard from in front of me. I looked up to see Brenden coming out of what I assume was the kitchen.

“She’s friendly. She will snuggle your face off if you let her,” he chuckled. I bent down and picked her up. “I made some food if you’re hungry.” I followed him into the kitchen, and there was lots of food.

“I like to eat...” Brenden laughed. I walked over and picked up a bag of chips and shoved some in my mouth.

“Me too!” I said.

**

“You play the drums?!”

“Yes I do. Ryan plays the bass. He can play guitar, but he prefers bass.” Brenden told me. I though that was amazing. Brenden and I were talking about our lives, although I hadn’t said anything bad yet. I don’t want to scare him...

“So, what about your sister? She seems kinda... I don’t know. Shy?” Here we go...

“Yea, she’s had a bad life. I have too. It’s a really long story...” I took a sip of my drink, looking down at the floor I was currently sitting on.

“You can tell me. I’ve got time.” He put his hand on my shoulder. I took a deep breath.

“It all started when my dad left us...”

“Wait, he’s not your dad?” Brenden asked, confused.

“No, he is. He didn’t actually leave us. My mom just said he did. Actually, my dad went to New York for college, and me and my mom and Nikki were going to go up there with him. But, we moved further away, and we didn’t see him until a few months ago at the mall.

“Nikki ran into him, and he talked to my mom, trying to reason with her. My mom is completely insane. I went home with my dad that day, and it only went downhill from there. Instead of hurting me like they always did, they started hitting Nikki.” I lifted up my shirt to show Brenden a scar on my back.

“That’s from my mom’s boyfriend, when I was ten. And when I left, like I said it got bad for her. I don’t know how many times we went in and out of the hospital that week. Nikki lost her baby, her boyfriend tried to kill her, she was almost raped...”

“Whoa! Whoa! What? That’s so terrible... I can’t even imagine all of this.” Brenden put his arm around me.

“I know, It’s still hard to believe all of it. I still have nightmares, and there’s always this thought in the back of my mind that it isn’t over; and I don’t think it is.”

It was a few minutes before anything was said. Brenden still had this shocked look on his face, and I didn’t blame him. “Okay, you’re turn.” I chuckled.

“Ha ha, well I don’t think I can compete with that, but I’ll try... Let’s see, Ryan and I have lived here our whole lives, and we’ve been by ourselves for about a year. Well, his mom still comes by every now and again, but only when she needs something. We have the same father, but he passed away almost 5 years ago. That’s when it went to shit for us.

“Our mom started doing drugs; well she’s Ryan’s mom, I never knew mine. But she left us about a year ago, and Ryan and I have been doing just fine.” There was a knock on the door. Brenden jumped up and opened it. He invited Nikki in and she sat down on the chair across from us.

“How’s it going?” she asked us.

“Your sister was telling me about your lives, and I was telling mine. And I won’t say anything about what happened, I promise. If I do spill anything it will be to the cat.” Penguin jumped up on Nikki’s lap, and tried to climb on top of her head.

“Yea, the whole thing is really embarrassing, and it’s hard to remember. Too many bad memories.” Nikki whispered.

Nikki's POV

I felt something heavy on my chest. I opened my eyes and saw Penguin on my chest. The door opened, just as I looked up. Ryan stepped in and looked around. He saw me and smiled. His smile was enough to make me melt. I couldn’t enough of it. I smiled back.

“Did you guys have a party or something?” Ryan asked as he stepped around a sprawled out Brenden.

I picked Penguin up and set him on the floor beside me, “Yea, something like that.” I stood up and followed Ryan into the kitchen.

He opened the fridge and his face fell, “You guys ate all our food! What am I supposed to eat for breakfast?” He faced me as he shut the fridge door. He was pretending to be angry. Even when angry he was adorable.

I shook my head, trying not to laugh. “Actually Danni and Brenden ate all the food. I barely had any. If you’re hungry you can come over to my house and I’ll make you pancakes or something.”

He smiled, “Pancakes sound great.”

We quietly made our way out of the kitchen, through the living room and out the front door. We cut across the lawn to my house. When we got to the front door he stopped me. He smiled again before pulling the door open and gesturing for me to go inside, “Ladies first.”

I laughed, shaking my head. I walked inside, with Ryan close behind me. “You’re really weird sometimes, you know that?”

He pulled the door shut and laughed, “I’m aware.”

I rolled my eyes and led him into the kitchen. There was a note on the fridge. It was from Frank. Apparently they left early to do some things with the band. I shrugged and put the note back on the fridge. I turned back around to see Ryan sitting down at the table.

I grabbed the pancake mix and a mixing bowl from the cupboard. I set them on the counter before reaching for a pan to make the pancakes in. I was about to walk back to the fridge to get the milk when Ryan stood in front of me and grabbed me by the shoulders.

He smiled, “You don’t have to make me pancakes. I can have cereal.” He dropped his hands, but I could still feel the heat of where they had been. It was exhilarating.

I shook my head, “You wait until I get everything out and then you decide you want to have cereal instead. Yea, that’s great.” I sat down at the table, “You put everything away then. And make your own damn cereal!”

I heard him laugh as he put everything away. After a few minutes he sat down next to me with a huge bowl of cereal. I shook my head. He complains about us eating all his food, but he can eat all our food.

He handed me a spoon, “Hungry?”

I grabbed the spoon, smiling. “You are a terrible person.”

He laughed, taking a bite of cereal, “I’m glad you think so.”

“That’s not a compliment.” I took a bite of cereal.

He had a few more spoonfuls of cereal before putting the spoon down and staring at me. He didn’t say anything, he just stared at me. It was starting to freak me out a little bit.

“What are you staring at?” I finally asked.

He looked away, shaking his head, “You. I can’t help it. You’re just so beautiful.”

I felt myself blushing. I shook my head, “You don’t mean that.”

He nodded, looking into my eyes. “I think you’re beautiful, and smart and funny, and every other amazing thing a person could ever be.” He leaned closer to me until we were touching. It felt like my whole body was on fire. I didn’t know what was about to happen, but I didn’t care. Just him being that close to me was amazing.

And then it happened. He leaned down and pressed his lips to mine. Only for a few seconds, but it was the most amazing few seconds of my life. I had never felt like that before. Not with Dustin, and definitely not with Stevie. It was incredible.
