Gerard sat at his dinner table staring at the TV screen but ignoring what ever it was broadcasting. The coffee in his hand was getting cold yet he couldn’t bring himself to drink it. His mind was running a million miles an hour thinking about everything he saw today at Ms. Iero’s house and how Frank looked. The door creaked open then slammed shut but Gerard knew who it was. A girl with black hair walked in and set down her purse on the counter. She had on a tight white blouse and a black pencil skirt, her jacket slung over her arm.

“Gee baby you’re home early.” She walked up behind him and wrapped her arms over his shoulder and kissed the top of his head. “Gee, is everything alright?”

Gerard sighed. “Just a patient.” He stood up and took his coffee up to the sink, avoiding his girlfriend’s stare. He didn’t want to tell her about Frank or his situation because he knew she wouldn’t approve. She didn’t’ like him going out of his way for people.

She eyed him pouring out his now cold coffee, leaning against the table. “Gee, what’s going on?”

He shook his head. “I don’t wana talk about it ok Lyn? Please?” He looked up at her with pleading eyes but she shook her head.

“Ya know, I was watching the news today during lunch and did you hear about the boy who was raped by the doctors for over 5 months? I couldn’t believe it. Poor kid.”

I nodded. “Frank Iero, yeah I heard about it.” I reached into the fridge and pulled out a beer. “I can’t believe anyone would do something like that and then have the fucking gaull to deny even knowing he was a patient.”

Lyn-z nodded. “The news also said something about having a local doctor on call for the kid but they didn’t say who. Prolly to keep him and any detail out of the press.” She walked over, taking the beer out of my hand with a playful smile. “But enough about that kid, I’m home and for once your home before 9pm. I’d like to spend some time with my sexy boyfriend for once.” She wrapped her arms around his neck, beer still him her hand behind his head and pulled him into a kiss. He smiled into the kiss, placing his hands on her waist mumbling something about dinner and more work to do.

“Gee for once can’t you just forget about work and focus on me?” She kissed him again. “I never see you anymore.”

He chuckled, “Ok.”

April 10th, 2009
Los Angels Jail

“I told you! I didn’t’ know anything was goin on!” An older, balding man sat in the chair with chains on his wrists keeping to the bolted down table. His face was wrinkled and his eyes twisted with anger.

Another man sat at the other side of the table, shuffling papers and documents on the case he was interrogating the man for. He had on a black suit and combed back hair. He was young, probably around 25. “So your telling me, as head of the hospital, you had no idea a boy was being held against his will, administered drugs to keep him sick so your own staff could sexually abuse him for 5 months? I don’t know what kind of hospital you were running but there is one thing I do know Mr. Terrice, you are going away for a very long time if you don’t start talking.”

Mr. Terrice grunted. “I assure you I knew nothing of the activities taking place in my hospital and if I had, something would have been done immediately. Maybe you should be taking to me whose semen was found in the boy instead of me.”

“Harsh words from a supposedly compassionate man. Why did you get into the medical field because from what I’m seeing, it wasn’t to help people. We are questioning you because the man under your watch is dead. You remember Rufus Tunner correct? His body was found earlier this week in a ditch. Ironically right before he was due to be arrested.”

“So what? You think I killed him? News flash Mr. spiffy suit. I’ve been in here. I’ve got nothing to do with it.” He grinned, sitting back in his seat.

“See, that’s where I think you do. He was going to be arrested, he was going to talk. We would have a full on confession not just from him, but with all the dirt on you and you couldn’t have that. It would ruin your chances of getting off scot free so you had someone take him out. Make it look like a revenge killing. The question is who?”

The convict leaned forward, grinning. “I told you. I don’t know a thing.”

“Your going down for something. Be it murder or sexual assault of a minor. You will go down. The final question is for what? They don’t take to kindly to child rapists in jail I hear.”

The man stood up and looked at the guard. “I’m done with him for now.”

He exited the room to be met by a woman standing with a smile on her face. “You did good James.”

He smiled. “Thank you Lyn-z. Any news on who this doctor is that is treating Iero?”

She shook her head. “No, I’m afraid not. Its not on top of the priority list so legal is being a pain about getting that info to us.” They talked as they walked down the hall way and into the lobby filled with people in suits and heals.

“Do we know what hospital they work at?” James asked as they made their way out of the busy building and into a black car parked on the side of the street.

“I’m afraid not. All I was able to find is that it is a local one but its LA. That could be anywhere. I asked Gerard about it but he was all clamed up about some patient he’s working with.” Lyn-z shook her head as she sat in the passenger seat, setting her bag on the floor board.

“Ya know, I really think you should dump the guy. He never pays attention to you, and when he is, its not all of his attention. You can do so much better Lyn-z.” James kept his eyes on the traffic filled intersection as he spoke.

“I know James but I just…….I just….I don’t know.” She frowned, looking out the window. The truth was she had known Gerard wasn’t into her for a long time she just couldn’t face it. She kept thinking she could get him to love her again and she didn’t know what she did wrong to make him stop. “I don’t know what I did wrong honestly.”

James sighed. “I really don’t know why you keep trying Lyn. He’s not worth it.” He placed his hand on her leg and looked over at her. Her eyes grew wide and her heart started to pound.

“No James.” Her quickly pulled his hand off her and glared. “I will NOT do this to Gerard. End of Story. You can let me out at this corner here, I have a few things I need to pick up on this street anyways.”

“Lyn please….I didn’t mean…”

“James just stop the car.” She glared at him, opening the door and climbing out with her bag over her shoulder. “I’ll see you at the office on Monday. Have a good weekend James.” With that, she shut the door and walked into the coffee shop no caring if James actually did have a good weekend or not. Once she sat down at a table, she pulled her phone out of her pocket and decided to text Gerard.

Hey bebe, can we do lunch?

She set her phone down on the table and looked up at the waiter who was smiling at her politely. “What can I get you mam?”

“Ummm Vanilla Late please.” She smiled back and watched as he nodded, walking away to go get her coffee. Her phone buzzed and she looked down to see the response from Gerard.

Kinda buzy. Dinner?

She frowned, her fingers moving an a quick pace to respond.

Damn it Gerard. We really need to talk. If you can’t get out, can I swing by the office and bring something in? You gotta eat, why not with me?

The waiter brought her coffee, eyeing her before walking away when she said she didn’t need anything else and thanking him. Her phone buzzed on the table as she took a sip of her coffee.

Alright. I’m with a patient right now but should be done around 1. In my office?

She smiled as sad smile. She should have known it was a patient. Sure. What do you want for lunch?

Ummm…..cigarettes and valentines?

She laughed at his response, a clear jab at a Green Day song then took another sip of her coffee. Sure Gerard. :P

Gerard sat in the chair staring at his phone. What could be so important that Lyn-z needed to talk to me about during lunch? I looked up at Frank who was once again curled up against his mother watching a movie. He hadn’t spoken all day but he seemed a little more relaxed with me being here. Every once and a while he would look over and eye me, making sure I wasn’t going to try anything but he wasn’t nearly as tense as he was yesterday. I was surprised to find that the movie Frank had chosen was the 1938 King Kong that had been premastered and re-released a few years ago. I guess it had been a big money maker due to the new King Kong with Jack Black coming out around the same time. My phone buzzed causing me too look away from the TV screen to find it was another text from Lyn-z.

I’m early. Where are you?

I looked at my watch and it was only noon. I had another hour before she was supposed to be at my office. I sighed, annoyed at her persistence.

I told you, I’m with a patient. Why are you so early?

Mrs. Iero looked up at me with a questioning look as I was now glaring at my phone. I sighed again and frowned. “Girlfriend”

She chuckled giving me an amused look. “I see.”

My phone buzzed and I couldn’t help but drop my jaw at the audacity of her response.

I thought I would check to make sure you are even there which your not. Where are you Gerard?

I growled at my phone, shaking my head with a sad smile, responding angrily.

Un-fucking-believable. I told you 1pm and you come an hour early to make sure I’m at work? Are you out of your mind? I’m with a patient right now and I never said that patient was at the hospital. It’s a house call if you must know. Now if you’ll excuse me, I must get back to work. See you at 1.

I turned my phone off, knowing it was unprofessional to be texting while with a patient, house call or not.

“M..mm…Mr. Way?”

I looked up with wide eyes at the boy who had just called my name. Mrs. Iero seemed to be just as shocked at I was. “Yes Frank?”

He blushed and lowered his head. “n…n..nothing.”

Mrs. Iero looked down at her son. “Frank, darling what is it? Is everything alright?”

“I just….umm…had a…ah..um…q…que…question.” His eyes were on his hands that were paying with his sheets.

Gerard stood up, placing his phone on the table but stoped when he saw Frank cower away. “Please don’t hurt me…I just had a question. That’s all! I never meant no harm by it…plesase!”

Gerard’s heart broke at the cowering boy, clutching to his mother, eyes shut tightly and shaking with fear. He wanted so badly to help the broken boy. “Frank. I’m not going to hurt you. I promise. Please listen to me. Frank. Frank look at me.”

He crouched down on the floor, kneeling beside Frank’s bed as Frank timidly opened his eyes to stare into Gerard’s hazel ones. Gerard smiled, keeping his hands down and away from the boy, knowing he would be frightened by any movements. “I’ll never let them hurt you again. I promise. Please believe me.”

Frank’s wide, tear-filled hazel eyes stared into Gerard’s, trying to find the lie, the false hope to get him to let his guard down and he couldn’t find it. It ended with him just nodding and looking away, not sure of what to say.

Gerard slowly stood up, looking at the clock. 12:42. “I need to get going but I’ll be back tomorrow should Frank still want me here and Frank, I mean what I said. No one is going to hurt you.” He pulled out a small piece of paper from his pocket and scribbled something down before setting it at the foot of the bed. “I’m here Frank if you need anything, no matter what time it is ok?”

Frank didn’t look at him but just stayed curled up in his mother’s arms. Gerard smiled and knew Frank had heard him as he walked out of the room, giving a silent goodbye to Mrs. Iero before jumping in his car to go have ‘lunch’ with his girlfriend.

Lyn-z sat on Gerard’s desk, legs crossed and leaning back on her hands waiting for him to show. She couldn’t understand what was going on with him but she wanted so badly to find out. They had been together for over a year and she was afraid it was coming to an end. The door knob jiggled then opened to reveal a tired and annoyed looking Gerard. His black hair was slightly disheveled however she assumed that to be from driving on the interstate with the windows down but she couldn’t stop herself from thinking it was something else. He didn’t meet her gaze when he walked in, simply closing the door and setting some papers in a drawer.

“I brought lunch….” Lyn-z tried to get his attention but he simply nodded.

“Thanks.” He looked up, finally meeting her gaze but it wasn’t a look she was expecting. She wanted to see love but the only thing that swirled in his beautiful hazel eyes was anger. “Why Lyn-z?”

“Wha…what? Why what Gerard?” She knew what he was talking about but wanted him to say it. If they were going to have a fight, it was going to be brought on by him and not her.

“Showing up an hour early to see if I’m here? What the hell is that?” His voice was cold but he wasn’t yelling and that scared her.

“I just….you’re never home! When you are you say nothing about your day, about work! I get here and your not even in yet when you say you are? What the fuck Gerard?!?”

Gerard sighed, running his hand through his hair. “I told you I was with a patient Lyn-z. Why can’t you trust me?”

“You never give me a chance to Gee! I want to trust you, I want to be with you! I want to know! Please…..just talk to me.” Tears were brimming her eyes and she looked down, trying to hide behind her jet black hair.

Gerard bowed his head, he didn’t want to see her cry. “Lyn-z…bebe I’m sorry. I just….i can’t. Not with this patient.”

“why Gerard? Why not? If your cheating on me just tell me. Please don’t drag it out.”

“No! Lyn its not that I swear!” his eyes grew wide and he rushed over to pull Lyn-z into a hug. “I swear on the grave of my grandmother, its not that. Its just…..its a legal thing.”

She looked up at Gerard with tear stained eyes. “promise?”

“I promise. Come on. Lets not do this here ok? Can we talk about it when I get home. No work, no papers, just dinner and a conversation.”

Lyn-z smiled, nodding before leaning up and capturing Gerard’s lips with her own. He smiled into the kiss, pulling her closer. “Now, lets eat that lunch of yours”
