Tuesday Night/ Wednesday Morning
Frank
When I opened my eyes, Mikey’s room was still dark. I could already tell that I hadn’t been asleep for very long. I rolled over, escaping from Mikey’s arms, to look at the clock. It was only a few minutes past midnight.
I could hear Mikey snoring softly beside me. It was nice to know that one of us could sleep after what happened earlier. I hadn’t been able to stop thinking about the proposal since it happened. I kept picturing Mikey and I married, with a family.
Looking down at the ring on my finger, it finally started to sink in. I was going to marry Mikey and we were going to spend the rest of our lives together. The more I thought about it, the scarier it became. Maybe I wasn’t ready for marriage. I was only eighteen.
I sat up, and took a deep breath, trying to calm myself down. Everything was going to be okay. Mikey and I were made for each other. I knew we were going to get married eventually, I just never imagined it would be so soon.
Looking at Mikey, I couldn’t help but smile. Soon enough I would be spending every night like this. Even though I was glad to have Mikey by my side, I was still terrified. I stood up, deciding to go downstairs and get something to drink. Maybe it would help my nerves.
As I walked down the hallway, I saw that Gerard’s bedroom light was on. I guess I wasn’t the only person in the house who couldn’t sleep. Quietly, I made my way down the stairs to the kitchen. I flipped the light on and got a glass of milk. I was just about to sit down at the table when I heard someone walk into the kitchen. Expecting Mikey, I turned around, “Oh, Gerard.”
Gerard laughed, “Expecting someone else?” He reached into the fridge and grabbed a doughnut.
I sat down at the table and took a sip of my milk. Across from me, Gerard sat down taking a bite of his doughnut. “So, what brings you down to the kitchen at midnight?” he asked.
I sighed, “Can’t sleep. I’ve been thinking too much.”
He nodded, taking another bite of his doughnut, “Thinking about what?”
Taking a drink of my milk, I looked down at the ring on my hand. Before I could say anything I heard Gerard gasp. I looked up at him and his mouth was hanging open and he was looking directly at the ring. “Wow,” was all he said.
I nodded, “Yeah, it was definitely a surprise.”
He shook his head, “Did it just happen?”
“Yea. Mikey and I were up in his room, talking and stuff, when all of a sudden he asked me to marry him. It was crazy.” I shook my head, smiling. “I just had to say yes.”
Gerard grabbed my hand and brought it closer to his face, “I just can’t believe he actually did it. I never would have thought Mikey would be getting married before me.”
I shrugged, taking my hand back. “You just haven’t found the right person yet. Don’t worry, someone will come around soon enough.”
He sighed, finishing his doughnut, “I just hope I haven’t already met that special person and let him get away.”
I couldn’t think of the right thing to say, so I didn’t say anything at all. After a few minutes of awkward silence, Gerard sighed, “Well, congratulations. I’m not trying to bring down your mood or anything.”
I shook my head, smiling, “Trust me, nothing could bring my mood down right now.” I finished the rest of my milk, and before I could stand up to put the glass in the sink, Gerard grabbed it. I watched him as he took it to the sink and rinsed it out.
When he turned around I couldn’t help but notice how much he looked like Mikey. I guess I had never noticed the resemblance before. It was amazing that two people could look so much alike and yet be so different. He smiled at me, “Don’t go breaking my brother’s heart. I don’t want to have to beat you up.”
I couldn’t help but laugh, “I promise I won’t break his heart. He’s stuck with me forever.”
Gerard nodded, “I’m glad he picked a guy like you, and not some crazy drug addict. He’s lucky to have you.”
I just shook my head, “Sometimes, I think I’m the lucky one.”
He leaned back against the counter and smiled, “You’re both lucky.” He yawned, “Well, I should probably try and get some sleep. Try being the key word here.”
“Yea, me too.” I laughed. “I have a busy day tomorrow, with school and everything.” I paused, “I can’t wait for graduation.”
He shook his head, “I keep forgetting you two are still in school. I never would have imagined being engaged in high school.”
I shrugged, “I think I can manage.” Slowly, I stood up and pushed in my chair. The whole time, I could feel Gerard’s eyes on me. I didn’t think anything of it. When I looked back at him, he was still leaning against the counter. “Well, I guess I’ll see you in the morning.”
He just nodded. I left the kitchen and practically ran up the stairs back to Mikey’s room. He was still fast asleep. I don’t even think he noticed I left. Carefully, I climbed back into bed beside him.
I had just closed my eyes when I felt him roll over and pull me closer to him. “I thought you ran away,” he whispered.
I shook my head, turning to face him. His hair was disheveled, and his eyes were brighter than usual. I wouldn’t mind waking up to this every day for the rest of my life. “No, I just couldn’t sleep. I was just downstairs getting a drink.”
He yawned, burying his face in my chest. “Don’t ever leave like that again.”
I wrapped my arms around him and kissed his forehead, “I won’t. I promise.”
