“That was the best day ever!” I giggled as Mom unlocked the door to her flat and let me inside. Mom had taken me shopping and had brought me pretty much everything I’d asked her! Whenever I went shopping with Dad he was so tight about what I was allowed to have and what I wasn’t. Mom even let me have a seriously awesome pair of super high heels. I have the best Mom in the whole entire world.

“I’m glad you had fun.” Mom smiled at me and ran her fingers through her hair “Go and get changed into the new clothes I got you. I don’t like the one’s you’re wearing.”

“Me neither but Dad got them for me.” I shrugged my shoulders and ran into Mom’s room. I got changed into a brand new LostAlone tee-shirt and a black pair of designer jeans.

“You look amazing!” Mom grinned then glanced at the clock “Hey Miranda, I was thinking of going out to the pub tonight.”

“What pub?” I asked her “I don’t mind coming. I can just play on my new DS or something!”

Mom laughed “Don’t be silly, you wouldn’t be allowed in. I was thinking of just me going. I kind of promised some of my friends that I’d meet up with them. You don’t mind staying here by yourself do you? You could make some dinner, watch some TV or play your DS or whatever and then go to sleep on the sofa when you’re tired.”

I bit my lip “Do you have to go out? Couldn’t we just stay in and watch a movie or something?”

“Come on Miranda; don’t tell me you’re scared! You’re a big girl now, not a little kid.” Mom went into her bedroom to get changed “You’ll be fine, honestly!”

I sat down on my Mom’s sofa and chewed on my lip. The longest Dad had left me at home by myself for was Dad had ran over the road to pick up his guitar from Gerard’s. And he hadn’t stayed around to chat because he hated the thought of leaving me alone. He was the only one that knew just how scared I was of being left by myself. I’ve felt that way ever since Mom left.

For the first time I began to wish that I’d stayed at home with Dad and Penina. They wouldn’t have left me by myself. We’d be laughing, watching another movie, eating way too much chocolate.

Mom came out of her bedroom “How do I look Hun?”

I looked at her “You look great.” I smiled.

“Thank you for being such a good understanding girl.” Mom kissed my cheek “I’ll be back before midnight, I promise! Good night!” And with that, she ran out of the house and locked the door behind her.

I sighed and flicked on the TV because I couldn’t stand the silence in the house. Every five minutes I thought I could hear someone creeping around the flat so I’d press the mute button quickly. It took me half-an-hour to realise that it was just the people upstairs.

For dinner I heated some pizza up and watched it in front of the TV, not particularly watching what was on the screen. I glanced at the clock. Mom wouldn’t be home for ages. Once I was done with the pizza, I cleaned everything up and then went back into the living room to try out my new DS. I played on that for about an hour and a half before it got onto low battery. I couldn’t be bothered to faff around with the charger so I just put it down and decided to charge it when I got back to Dad’s tomorrow.

My phone pinged with a text message. It was off Dad Hope you’re having a good time. Me and Penina miss you – D xx “I miss you too.” I muttered under my breath but I didn’t dare say that in my text. Instead I just text back saying that I was having a great time and that Mom was awesome.

Whatever channel I was watching suddenly started playing a horror movie so I flicked channels pretty quickly. I often teased Rose for being a baby but I was the real baby. Couldn’t handle being home alone, couldn’t handle watching horror movies. It wasn’t like my Mom was committing a huge crime or anything. Heaps of Mom’s went off and left their children alone for the night.

Time crept by really slowly but when it made to one in the morning I started to wonder whether Mom was even coming back ‘Of course she is! She’s just having such a good time she can’t pull herself away.’ A voice in my head told me sternly ‘And what’s wrong with that? She’s been with you all day for crying out loud! She deserves to have some fun! She’ll be back when you wake up.’

So I got my duvet and pillow, flicked out all the lights and switched off the TV before diving onto the sofa quickly and nestling right down under the covers. It took me ages to get to sleep but finally I managed it.

I was woken up a couple of hours later by Mom flicking on the light switch. I pretended to be asleep the moment I heard a male voice muttering something “Oopsies! I forgot I’d left her curled up on the sofa.” Mom giggled “Look, you’d better go. You’re going to wake her up.”

“But I wanted to have some man!” The man cried. There was some movement and my Mom giggled again.

“Look, she’s going home first thing tomorrow morning. I have an audition in the evening but what if we meet up in the afternoon?” The man muttered something and Mom laughed hysterically “You’re so bad! Alright, I’ll see you as soon as I dump the kid okay? Bye!”
