There was nothing to do, other than wallow in self-pity; there was also no point in going to sleep. His mind kept going back to the blood and cuts on his arms. Had he cut himself in his sleep? Grabbed a knife from the kitchen and dragged the blade across his arms? Shortly after he was done with the wallowing, he decided to clean the house, by starting in the kitchen and washing the dishes, scrubbing dried food off of white, china plates. Cleaning was the only thing he could do to take his mind off of things, and it seemed like he was always cleaning. It made him feel very happy, as he was a house-proud person, and he was fixed on perfection.

Maybe I have a little bit of a problem.

Dusting was his next task after he had finished washing the dishes. The counters, shelves, any high surface he could find and even some low ones that no one would ever notice. Even when not a speck of dust was visible, he'd continue to wipe it. Even if you can't see it, dust is still there. It's always there, lurking like a monster in the night.

By the time Shannon had come downstairs; Jared had made breakfast, drank a few cups of tea and prepared himself for the bombarding of questions he’d get from his brother. He was prepared for each question; a good lie would need to be formulated for each one. Jared was good at lying when it came to mysterious goings on, especially when it was some crazy lie. Jared was sat at the breakfast table with another cup of tea, reading the newspaper when Shannon noticed the bandages on him.

“Oh my God, Jared… what did you do?” He asked, running his hand over the plain white bandages. This hurt Jared, but he tried to act like it didn't hurt at all.

“Oh, I was making coffee and I spilled boiling water over myself.”

“Does it hurt?”

“I’ll live. Just a few burns, I’ll be fine.” Jared replied quickly, wiping the kitchen table over with a damp cloth.

Jared hated lying to his brother, more than anything in the world. It made him feel like a terrible person, someone Shannon couldn’t trust. Tomo was in the room too, listening in on their conversation. No one knew the truth about what had happened, not even Jared, who was on the receiving end of the pain. The whole experience had confused him a lot, and scared him too.

Jared sat on his bed, changing the bandages on his arms. They wouldn’t stop bleeding and it was beginning to infuriate him. He could hear his brother shouting up at him, telling him to come to the kitchen, but he ignored him, and then carried on wrapping his arms. He then heard the familiar footsteps along the hall, his heart rate increased and he tried to hide his arms. Shannon strolled into the room, his eyes widened to double their size and he couldn't help but stare at his brother, who was completely still. Jared had been caught out. His lie wasn't as fool proof as he had thought.

“What the fuck did you do?” Shannon yelled, jumping over to his brother who stayed quiet.

“I don’t know.”

“You must know, you’re bleeding! Jesus, Jared, I thought you got over the cutting thing-”

Jared had cut himself before when he was going through a minor bout of depression, his band, his pride and joy was being sued by EMI for 30 million dollars, there was a load of rumours going around about him in the media; that he was a gay prick, a crack whore, an egotistic maniac... becoming a famous actor and rock-star wasn't all it was cracked up to be, and life had become too much.

“I told you, I don’t know. I just woke up, and they were there.”

By this point, Jared felt completely numb. He couldn’t lie any more, Shannon wouldn’t believe him, and he would freak out in front of Tomo, Jamie, Robert and Steve while they were recording. That was how it always went with him, over-exaggeration and melodrama. He would have to beg him not to tell anyone, he felt bad enough as it was, without his most supportive, reassuring, understanding family member making him feel worse.

“Do you seriously want to get yourself locked up? Honestly, you’re scaring me. Do you need to see a doctor and get some of those fancy pills? Xanax?”

“I’m not depressed and I don’t need anything. I’m absolutely fine, there’s no need to worry about me. It’s just a… weird coincidence.” Jared sighed, shrugging his skinny shoulders, hoping that everything would die down by the end of the day.
