Her eyes opened to the sound of a TV not so far away. She felt groggy and her body felt limp. Her hair was a mess behind her and her dress was all wrinkled. She rubbed at her eyes, slipped a hand back through her hair before slowly lifting her head from where it was resting. She was sitting on the wooden floor of a bedroom and her head had been laying against the edge of the bed. There wasn’t anybody else in the room/. When she had the thought that it had all been a dream she quickly told herself otherwise. The room she was in was not her own and the sounds coming from the barred window was not from her neighborhood. All there was in the room was the bed, a small table and two doors. One that led to the bathroom and the other that no doubt led to elsewhere in the house. It was late afternoon, the sky was darkening and a soft breeze was whistling in through the bas of the window.
She made herself get up despite the stiffness in her legs and the fogginess in her head. She was a mess, inside and out. The details poured back into her and with them she became a terrified mess. Something wasn’t right, she had figured that much out from her memories. She choked them back though when she felt vomit rise up in her throat. She rushed into the door that led to the bathroom and collapsed in front of the toilet, emptying herself as she did.
Her head was spinning, her belly ached and her hands were weak. Tears came down as she threw herself back against the wall after flushing the contents of her stomach away. She wiped at them and tried to tell herself to calm down, that things weren’t as horrible as they seemed to be. She was going to get out of here, it didn’t matter how. She had to do something. All she needed was a bit of her strength back.
The door to the bedroom made a creaking sound as it opened and it caused Elena to shoot up with panic. She backed up against the wall, trying to think of a million ways to escape but found none. Nothing in her reach was useful enough and her tightening up with fear was helping any either. She started to cry again, her tears falling rapidly as she tried to remain steady where she stood.
Footsteps approached the bathroom and Elena clutched her hand to her heart, trying to calm, trying to will herself to find some bravery. If she was going to get through this that was what she needed right?
“Elena?” It was the voice from the woman who had been holding the gun when she had been taken. She soon came around the corner and into the bathroom with a smile neatly placed on her full lips. “Are you sick?”
Elena wiped her hand across her lips and tried to further disappear into the wall behind her.
“It’s just the sedative. Side effects.” She shrugged a little, laughing as she did and pushing back strands of her honey brown hair.
“What am I doing here?” Elena forced out her words through her tears.
“You’ll figure that out soon enough. Jared, get her some food.” The woman tossed out behind her.
Elena looked in that direction, finding the man from earlier standing there in the bedroom. His eyes locked with hers and she quickly turned away. He was standing there as if he had no other place in the world. His arms were folded across his chest and his eyes were shadowed by the brim of his black fedora. In the strangest way Elena couldn’t help but find his eyes overwhelmingly beautiful. There was something hidden in them, a softness as well as the kind of violence that landed her in this situation.
Jared’s footsteps quickly hurried away and the woman turned to look back at Elena, the same smile on her lips. “My name is Sophia. Make yourself at home.” She waved her hand about and laughed.
Elena watched her leave and heard the door shut. She placed her hand across her stomach and slowly brought herself into the bedroom. Carefully she laid herself on the bed, pushing her face into the mattress as she cried out. Her heart was clenching inside of her, the pain of fear gripped her. She had only to keep hope and to know that Samuel would sort this out. These people no doubt just wanted money and that he had lots of. She wondered if he would part with a portion of it though for her sake. The thought made her tears came quicker and her pain come fiercer.
The sound of the door opening again caused her to sit up despite the dizziness in her head. She looked up at who it was and was startled by Jared’s presence standing there. He was holding a paper plate, a simple sandwich laying on top. He held it out to her but when she didn’t grab it he set it on the edge of the bed.
“What’s going to happen to me?” She asked, her tears falling over her lips.
He looked behind himself cautiously before hiding his hands away into the pockets of his black coat. His lips parted as if he were planning on saying something but just as soon he pressed them together again.
“Please, don’t kill me.” She whispered.
He closed his eyes on her voice, on that faltering plea that drove the color from his face. “I’m sorry.” He stated coldly before slipping out of the room again.
Heavily Elena sighed and looked down at her sandwich. Her stomach growled considering she hadn’t eaten anything all day- if it was indeed the same day. She ate the sandwich and set the plate down on the ground before she curled up in the middle of the bed. Her eyes closed again this time allowing her to fall into a thin sleep.
Her dreams were filled with the small hopeful voice that yearned for Samuel to love her enough to care. Sophia rushed through her dreams, those dark eyes almost wicked. Jared’s was there too, caught in the shadows of the depths of her mind. His eyes were alive as they watched her and she felt a certain overwhelming feeling course through her. His cold and fluid voice laced through each image. What was going on with her?
She woke with a cry, the effects of the sedative finally wearing off. She sat up and looked around. Her shoulders fell once she realized that it hadn’t been a dream. Smoothing her hair back she set her bare feet on the floor. She could smell herself and she couldn’t help but wonder how long she had been unconscious. The dress she was wearing was more than uncomfortable but her body was less tired now. Her ears pricked up to the sound of a car driving away. She rushed to the window and looked down. Jared was standing on the lawn below and a small black car had driven away. He gave a small wave with his gloved hand before tucking it away again. Elena just watched him, the way he barely moved. The wind swept the hair near the nape of his neck.
As if he had felt her gaze he turned around and let his eyes travel up the house to where her window was. His eyes caught ahold of hers and some movement twitched on his thin lips. She gasped and pulled herself away from the window. She rushed to the bed and sat back against the wall, tucking her legs up to her chest.
Soon enough she heard the sound of his boots coming to her door and then it opened. He stood there in the doorway, his coat open to show the white of his shirt inside and the black of his pants. He reached up and took that from his head, turning back and setting it down somewhere.
She swallowed harshly and let her tears fall. She was afraid of his overwhelming presence just standing there. Samuel had often been aggressive with her but thought of being forced tore her apart.
He came further into the room kneeling down beside her side of the bed.
She flinched away and he let out a small laugh.
“Are you going to…” She couldn’t bring herself to say it, all she did was turn her face away.
“Rape you?” He finished, causing her fearful eyes to turn back to her. He shook his head and withdrew a kind of chain from the pocket of his coat. “Sophia would kill me anyways, I only have eyes for her….not that I wanted to.” He assured her silently with his eyes but his words had remained as cold as before. For the first time though Elena realized how melodious his voice was. “But she does want this on while she’s gone.” He rattled the chain before leaning down and connected it to the bedpost. “The chain’s long enough to get you around the room.”
When he leant down his hair fell a little exposing the skin of his neck. She watched the remnants of the strands left wisp away with the gentle breeze. She felt his hands clasp the chain to her ankle. She could have sighed at the gentleness of his touch but she tore herself from the moment and forced the thoughts from her head. She looked away and heard him stand up.
“Just call out if you need anything.” He said before leaving the room and closing the door behind him.
Finally she looked up, kicking herself for her ridiculous reaction. What was the matter with her? He had been apart of this, of keeping her here. Why would she be thinking this way?
She shook her head and looked down at the chain that was now keeping her prisoner. She sighed and lowered her head to her hands. She couldn’t help it if her hope was falling away. Where was Samuel?
