Brendon struggled out from underneath the shocked Blanche. “He's dead?” Denial more than disbelief tinted his words and his skin seemed to grow even more pale. What he did not notice was the shaken form of Blanche just behind him who seemed shocked to a sickening extreme.

“No...” She whispered.

JR nodded, “Brendon, we found him dead just now while we were running to meet you. We watched him take his last breath. The beast killed him.”

“No...” Her ribs seemed to constrict around her heart and lungs and a sharp, stabbing pain took the placing of the beating sensation of her heart. Her breath started to pass as short, spastic breaths through her nose as she bit on her quivering lip.

“I guess he got to poor Clarence before I did!” Brendon's sorrow was now quickly being replaced by growing rage.

“NO!” Blanche finally shouted, causing both JR and Brendon to turn to her. The lantern on the nightstand behind her cast her body in shadow as the flickering halo glowed about her form. “I just saw him. Just a few minutes ago. He can't be dead, he TALKED to me. He can't be dead! No, it's not true! No!”

“Blanche, we have his body with us here,” JR spoke softly as he stared in pity at her. Brendon enveloped her and held her firmly against him to try to stop her uncontrollable shaking, her body couldn't handle the stress anymore as the sobs took over.

“But I DID. I saw him HERE,” she cried.

“I believe you,” a soft voice spoke up from the entrance of Brendon's canvas room and they noticed Crackitus was still standing there, he had been so quiet till now. He looked awkwardly from disbelieving JR to the bewildered Brendon. “I mean, we all know you could see Brendon when he was dead... I think you saw Clarence's ghost.”

“But... but that was different,” Brendon whispered as he realized the serious implications of what Crackitus was saying.

“Is it?” The older man asked something. “Violent, unresolved deaths by supernatural beings? Not too different. All that made you special was you actually came back.”

“Why? Why could I see them?” Blanche seemed to have calmed a bit, but the white knuckled grip she kept on Brendon's arm showed she was still terrified.

Brendon looked down at the blonde woman and replied gravely, “It means you're a medium... a psychic of sorts.”

“What? Like... gypsies?” Blanche, like many of her victorian contemporaries, frowned down on the famously deceitful travelers.

“Uh... Of a sort... but classier and oh so much prettier.”

Crackitus coughed softly and they looked back at him, “Blanche, did he tell you anything?”

She nodded confidently, “Yes... he said there was two.”

“Two what?”

“I don't know,” she looked away and tried to remember if there were any clues, “That was all he said. What do you think it means?”

Brendon looked past Crackitus towards the warehouse beyond where the werewolf was caged. “I do not know... but we should go ask.”

-

Of course they couldn't ask the werewolf right away what was going on. Because of course werewolves can't talk in beast form... and especially not when they have enough tranquilizers in their system to take down a herd of bull elephants. African elephants, of course.

“I guess we have to wait till sunrise?” Blanch muttered as she sat down next to Brendon on the old velvet sofa they had brought to rest in front of the cage.

“Of course,” he muttered as he accepted the tea from Blanche who wrapped herself in a blanket and cozied up to him. He tried not to flinch away in pain at the contact, he preferred Blanche closer to him than farther away.

He yawned softly but Blanche still noticed. “Why don't you sleep? There's still a few hours till dawn so it's not like anything will happen.” Brendon opened his mouth to argue but yawned again. In all honesty, he could barely move from pain and exhaustion and nothing sounded better than sleep.

He nodded wearily and Blanche guided him down until his head was pillowed on her lap. She stroked his head and smoothed out his dust-coated hair. While his eyelids grew more and more heavy he heard her voice singing softly in the candle-lit warehouse.

“When the moon fell in love with the sun
All was golden in the sky
All was golden when the day met the night

When the sun found the moon
She was drinking tea in a garden
Under the green umbrella trees
In the middle of summer

When the moon found the sun
He looked like he was barely hanging on
But her eyes saved his life
In the middle of summer...”

He was not even aware that he had fallen asleep until he was shook gently awake by Blanche. “Brendon, he's starting to change back,” her voice was filled with terrified anticipation. He struggled to sit up and looked over at the cage. As the faded and still weak rays of the sin filtered through the upper windows of the warehouse, the creature within the cage was writhing in agony. It began to howl as the sounds of bones popping and grating against each other were soon drowned out. Blanched looked away and covered her ears to try to block out the scene before her as Brendon looked on. The other members of the League left their rooms and gathered around to watch.

And then, after what seemed like hours but was really only a few minutes, there was silence. In place of the beast, the form of a naked man lay on the floor in the middle of the cage. His back was to them as his body shook with labored breaths. Brendon stood up and opened the door to the cage while the other members seemed frozen in shock. Instead of rolling the man over, Brendon simply walked around him to get a better view. He stood still for a moment when he saw the identity and then looked up at the League. “Damn.”
