Alicia's car was parked outside of the coffee shop. She was sitting at a table in the window, playing with a sugar packet. When I pushed the door open, the bell above it jingled at Alicia's head snapped up. I smiled as I walked shakily towards her.
"Hey, baby," I sat opposite her.
"Hi, Mikey," she replied. I sighed and put my hand over hers.
"Look, sweetie, I'm sorry about last night," I said.
"Mikey..." she sighed, moving her hand away from mime.
"No, no, let me finish," I said. "I'm really sorry - look, it was my fault. I totally overreacted. You were right, one hundred per cent, and I'm so so sorry. Can we put this stupid fight behind us and make friends?"
"Mikey, look, you're a sweet guy," she said, with a sigh. "And I like you, I do. But... I just..." I knew what she was going to say so I cut her off before she could say it.
"Maybe it's not just the fight then," I rushed in. "Maybe... maybe there's something wrrong. Something wrong with us, with you and me. But we can fix it, Ali, we can put it right. Get marriage conselling or... or... something."
"Mikey. It's not the marriage," she said. "It's not you, not at all. It's me. I just... oh God, Mikey, I hate to hurt you like this, but I just don't love you any more."
"But I still love you..." I said. "Please, Al. I'll try harder, I'll change. C'mon babe, we can make it work, I promise. I'll make us work. We'll go back to how we were, we'll have fun and be best friends and all that again. W-we could renew our vows! Yeah, we'll do that, renew our vows! A-and you can get a dress, a white one with a long trail and we could get your sister and Bandit to be bridesmaids and Gerard will be my best man and you'll look so beautiful and it will just be perfect and... and... and..." I stopped, breathing heavily. Alicia just sighed.
"Mikey, you're making me feel horrible," she rubbed her nose. "It's not going to work. I can't stay in a loveless marriage."
"But... but..." I said. I swallowed. Then something came to me. "Is... Alicia, is there somebody else?"
"Yes," she whispered.
"Do I know him?" I asked. She shook her head.
"It's just a guy from my gym," she looked me in the eye. "Don't do anything stupid, Mikey."
"Does he make you happy?" I sniffed. She nodded. "Well then, it's okay. As long as you're happy, that's all that matters - but you tell him he'd better take care of you, okay?"
"Oh, Mikes," she said.
"We can still be friends can't we?" I asked.
"Yeah, of course we can," she said. "Best friends."
"Awesome," I smiled. "Listen, I'm gonna go, okay?"
"Okay. See you around?" she said.
"Sure thing," I hugged her then kissed her cheek before I left.
I didn't know where to go, so I drove in tears back to Gerard's.
