Chapter 1
It was a few weeks into My Chemical Romance's Danger Days tour, the band were driving in the tour bus through California to get to the next destination in time for the concert. Out the window there was nothing to see but miles and miles of open road and bare landscape.
It was now Gerard's turn to drive so naturally he had to play 'Na Na Na' because apparently the scenery fit perfectly to the music. Frank liked the song, he had been a part of making that song happen after all, but when he was trying to concentrate on reading his new book the sound was irritating him.
"Gerard, turn it down!" he shouted so the singer would hear him over the loud music "I know you absolutely love listening to the sound of your own voice because you're so vain but I'm trying to read!". Gerard took one hand off the wheel and gave Frank the middle finger then turned the volume down so at least Frank could hear his own thoughts.
"Thank you" Frank said relieved that he could carry on being enthralled in his reading, he didn't usually like reading books but his Nintendo DS had ran out of battery and the car charger had broken, so he just bought a random book to pass the countless hours of free time they have driving from place to place. After he was a few pages in though, he was completely captured, the characters, the plot lines; it was as if he'd been transported to another world. He just couldn't put the book down.
"What are you reading?" asked Ray curiously, pulling Frank back to reality. "Of Mice & Men" he answered, showing Ray the front cover of the book "It's brilliant". He was really enthusiastic when he spoke about the oh so amazing book, it was the first real book he'd read in a long time that he didn't want to throw out of the window and run over repeatedly.
"Oh, the one by John Steinbeck?" Ray asked after thinking about it. Frank's face lit up and he nodded excitedly, he had somebody to talk to about this amazing book. They could discuss favourite characters and opinions on the language of the book... Oh dear God, Frank was becoming a book nerd. He was turning into one of those people who discuss novels with friends and write reviews to post on the Internet.
"I had to read it when I was in school for English Language" explained Ray "I found it kinda boring to be honest". Frank froze and glared at his friend as if he'd just confessed to eating a new born puppy. You just didn't make fun of such an awesome book like that. It was simply a crime to disrespect 'Of Mice & Men'. Frank saw the discomfort on Ray's face and decided to stop giving him the death glare.
"How can say it's boring?" he half yelled, making Mikey's sleeping form stir. "Why's it boring?" Frank asked, quieter this time so as not to wake the slumbering bass player, otherwise all hell would break loose since Mikey was extremely cranky when you disturbed his afternoon nap. Seriously, awakening a sleeping Mikey Way is something that you do not want to do if you value your life.
"Err, well...it's just.... can you get off me please?" Ray said awkwardly. Frank looked down and it appeared he had jumped onto Ray's lap and grabbed a fistful of his t-shirt without noticing.
"Oh, sorry" Frank apologised before sliding back into his own seat "But seriously, how can't you like it?". Frank wanted to know why this undeserving peasant had reason to dislike such a beautiful masterpiece.
Ray spoke slowly, choosing his words carefully so as not to upset the rhythm guitarist "I guess it was just the fact we were forced to read it, and also we had an annoying substitute teacher who took almost lessons to read each chapter". Frank nodded and Ray figured that he had been forgiven of his crime.
Frank just started randomly staring at the lead guitarist as if he was trying to figure something out. He looked at his hair and his clothes, like working out a difficult maths question. You could almost see the cogs turning.
"What are you doing?" Ray questioned when he began to grow uncomfortable under Frank's calculating gaze. "Trying to work out who you'd be a good pair with" as if it was blatantly obvious. "What pair?" asked a very confused Ray.
Frank leaned closer to his band member, as if he was telling him a deep, dark secret. He said quietly "I think you'd be with Lennie, he'd be all over your hair. Or maybe Carlson...no, Slim!". "What, why Slim?" Ray blurted out wanting a reason behind Frank's answer.
"Well, you're both really understanding and you're both respected by people" Frank said, Ray thought that was kinda true even if he did say so himself. "What about me? Who'd I be with?" asked Frank, jumping up and down in his seat like a hyper child. Now this was getting interesting... Maybe being a book nerd wasn't so bad.
Ray looked at Frank for a moment thinking before concluding "George". "George?" Frank repeated, he just couldn't see it. "Yeah, Frank and George, it just fits- you're both short" explained Ray. Frank rolled his eyes, now that was just hitting below the belt.
Frank looked back at Gerard to check he wasn't listening. Luckily the singer was still singing and dancing in his seat to 'Party Poison'. "What about Gerard?" asked Frank still looking at the driver. Ray smiled evilly and looked at the next victim to the 'Of Mice & Men' pairing list.
Gerard just happened to looked in the mirror at that exact moment to see the two guitarists staring at him in a suspicious manner. They quickly turned around and looked out the window in attempt to look natural. Gerard raised his eyebrows but shrugged off the weird behaviour and continued to sing along with the recording of himself.
