Another chapter tonight. Big shout out to my girl Lisa for being a genius and helping me with this!!!
-----------
Pete and Cadence were sitting in the living room of his house. They had been back from the Doctors for about two hours and the shock of the news they had gotten still hadn't completely sunk in. Twins. They were not only going to be parents, but in five months they were going to have two newborns. Cadence seemed to be in more shock that anyone. Thankfully, Arii was down for a nap.
Well, the papparazzi had already told the world that Cadence was going to be Pete's 'next baby mama' but they didn't know they were going to be twins! The two of them were broken out of their thoughts by the doorbell ringing.
"Shit." Pete jumped up.
"What's wrong?" Cadence looked at him.
"I forgot Ashlee was bringing Bronx tonight." He walked to the door and opened it. Hopefully it was the nanny and not her. He was sure she was going to have something to say about the news.
When he opened the door, he had barely had time to register who it was before he was knocked backwards by a powerful slap to his face. He tried to grab the sideboard to keep himself from being thrown to the ground but he wasn't quick enough. Ashlee slapped him again and he was sent sprawling to the floor.
"Ashlee! What the fuck!" He exclaimed rather than questioned as he looked up at her.
"You fucking rat bastard!" Ashlee spat at him. "I can't believe you would do this to me."
"What the hell is goi-" Cadence stopped in her tracks as she took in the situation, her eyes darting from Pete on the floor to Ashlee towering over him, positively spitting venom.
"Pete! Are you okay?" She asked, rushing to his side.
"I'm... fine." Pete groaned, gingerly raising his hand to his cheek. He was winded from hitting the floor and clutched his stomach while he tried to catch his breath.
"What the hell do you think you're doing?" Cadence span round to face Ashlee.
"Who do you think you are?" Ashlee shot back. "You're nothing but a little whore. A home wrecker!"
"Go on, hit me. Hit a pregnant woman." Cadence hissed at her, drawing herself up to her full height. Ashlee glared at her, looking as though she wanted nothing more in the world.
"Didn't think so," Cadence replied angrily. She turned back to Pete and took his hands in hers.
"Can you stand up?"
"Yeah," Pete replied. Cadence pulled him to his feet and he steadied himself against the sideboard, inhaling deeply. His cheek was already bright red and starting to swell.
"Where's Bronx?" He immeditely asked as he looked around the room.
"He's in the car. I don't want him to see this." Ashlee said as she shot dirty glances at the couple in front of her.
"So you came here full well knowing that you were going to assault me?" Pete looked at her, he had immediately stood between Cadence and Ashlee. "Try explaining that to our son."
"No, how about we try explaining to our son that we're not even divorced yet and you're playing house with this bitch and now she's pregnant." Ashlee was seething. When she left him it was supposed to teach him something. He wasn't supposed to just move on.
"No one is playing house and all Bronx needs to know is that he's going to have a brother and a sister at the end of this." Cadence was trying so hard to keep her composure. All she really wanted to do was haul off and punch Ashlee in her face.
"No bastard child of yours is going to be sons sibling." Ashlee spit.
"You want me to give you a fucking reason to get another nose job?!" Cadence turned. She could no longer just keep her cool.
"Girls, let's talk about this like adults, huh?" Pete said, running a hand over his face.
"You really think this one is capable of being an adult?" Cadence replied angrily. "You've just said it yourself, she assaulted you!"
"Look." Pete held both his hands up in exasperation. "I think Ashlee and I need to talk in private."
"Oh no. If you need to say anything you can say it with me here." Cadence told him.
"What are you, his wife now?" Ashlee growled.
"What the hell is your problem, exactly? Why can't you just be happy? YOU were the one who left Pete. You should be happy that he's moving on!"
"I left him for a reason." Ashlee growled. "That doesn't give you the authority to come in here and think you run everything."
"I never said I run shit." Cadence retorted. "I don't even care what your reasons for leaving were. All I have to know is that I'm sure they were stupid and selfish."
Pete threw his hands up in the air, obviously this was not going to go smoothly.
"And trust me, he may have married you but it sure as hell wasn't what he wanted." She chuckled. "You come in here and make comments about fucking him wherever I sit and you think you're so fucking cute. Like your pathetic marriage could even measure up to our relationship." Cadence was seething. "You're the one that needs the fucking wake up call because guess what honey? Anytime he fucked you it was only because I wasn't around." Cadence had a smirk on her face. She knew what they had all those years ago and she knew it never went away.
"You little bitch," Ashlee seethed. She moved closer to Cadence but Pete moved in front of her, his arms held out at his sides. Cadence dodged around him and squared up to Ashlee.
"Oh, you have no idea. You don't know him like I know him. You never cared. All you ever cared about was looking good for the camera. Your whole relationship was a LIE, a stunt. Then you got pregnant and he felt like he HAD to marry you."
"Cadence," Pete said in a warning tone. He didn't want Cadence to open up a chapter of his life that she hadn't been present in. He had loved Ashlee but now Cadence had returned to his life, he realized he loved Ashlee, but he had never been IN love with her.
"You have no idea what you're talking about, little girl." Ashlee said, furiously. "You think you know everything, waltzing back into his life like nothing happened. Well let me tell you something, I picked up the pieces that YOU" she prodded a finger at her, "shattered. What's to say you're going to walk away again when you find another home to wreck, huh?"
Cadence took a deep breath. Ashlee was right there, when she left him all those years ago without so much as even a real reason she knew it killed him. This whole time, everything they had been through so far all she had thought about were her feelings. She wanted to say so much but she didn't even know what to say. Looking at Pete she frowned. "I'm sorry." She shook her head, she was close to losing it. Damn these pregnancy hormones.
Pete shook his head as he took her hand and kissed it. "It's ok." He looked at her. "I love you." He told her.
Cadence smiled, that was all she needed to hear. She loved him and she knew it. She loved everything about him and no amount of time could change that. "Swear?" She looked at him.
"I swear." He said. Cadence cupped his face in her hands and kissed him, but he winced as her hand rested on his cheek.
"Oh shit, I'm sorry!" She said, quickly taking her hands away.
"Isn't this touching?" Ashlee said, sarcastically. "You two won't last. Pete will be popping another round of Ativan before you drop that kid, if you haven't already lured another man away from his wife and children."
Ashlee turned on her heel and walked out of the house. Cadence and Pete both stood in silence, gobsmacked, for a few seconds. Cadence sprinted out of the house after Ashlee. There was no way she was going to get away with speaking about Pete like that.
That was until Cadence saw Bronx in the car grinning at the sight of Pete. She couldn't carry on this fight in front of him, he didn't deserve it.
"Don't be surprised if you never see your son again." Ashlee spat at Pete. "I am going to file to keep you away from him as long as this whore is around. You will not play house with MY son."
"You know what, Ashlee?" Cadence looked at her as they stood in the driveway. "I am so tired of this childish behavoir, we are both grown adults and we are mothers first and foremost. You are lucky enough to have him as your son's father." She pointed to Pete. "One day I am going to have to sit my daughter down and explain to her that her father is dead." Cadence was close to a breakdown. She needed to put this out there. "I will have to look my daughter in the eye and tell her that her father was a drug addict who chose to love a needle in his arm more than he loved me or her." She shook her head. "You should just be thankful that Pete is a great father who loves his son." She wiped away the tears from her eyes. "And just so you know, if you two were together when I came back into his life...none of this would be happening." She explained to her.
Ashlee stopped and looked at Cadence, she really had no idea what to say to that. She couldn't even fathom enough words to be mean.
"That..." Ashlee stopped and looked around at Bronx, then back at Cadence. "That isn't my problem, Cadence."
Cadence watched Ashlee for a few seconds before looking at Pete.
"I can't do this. I can't be the reason Bronx is taken away from you," Cadence said, tears welling up in her eyes. "I can't do that to him."
"Cad... don't be so stupid." Pete replied, grabbing her arm gently as she turned to go back into the house.
"It's for the best Pete. Bronx deserves his dad. How could I live with myself?"
She walked back into the house and Pete looked after her, his heart beating faster and faster. He looked at Ashlee in panic.
"Ashlee, how can you be so cruel? I don't understand why you want to punish me for something I haven't done. All I've ever wanted was for us to be happy, and if that means together or apart, then so be it. I did the right thing. I married you because I loved you. I know you grew to resent me... but don't take it out on Cadence. Don't make Bronx suffer because of what went wrong with us. He's part of you and me. We made him out of love."
"We made him out of pure lust for sex, Pete."
Pete hung his head and sighed. "Make me suffer all you want. But please don't let anyone else bear the brunt of this, Ash..." He looked up as he said her name softly.
"And how do you suppose I make you suffer?" She looked at him. "I can't even go out in public now with everyone knowing that you were unfaithful to me."
"Ashlee, call a spade a spade. You cheated on me. I did not even see Cadence again until after the divorce papers were signed." He looked at her. "Even if Cadence wasn't around, it's not like we were going to get back together. I have three children to worry about now. No, four." He shook his head. He wasn't going to leave out Ariana.
"What?" Ashlee looked at him.
"Cadence is having twins." He looked at her. "I am not going to miss any of my children's lives. Not Bronx's and I'm not letting Cad leave with my children because of you. Why can't we just agree to co-parent?" He asked. "Cadence is not going to be Bronx's mother, she would never take your place as his mother." He reassured her. "If anything we can all be in this together..."
Ashlee shook her head. "I have nothing to say right now." She was at a loss for words. "Get your son. I'll see you on Sunday." She didn't even know what to say. She had gone there with every intention of being strong and fighting with him and now she had no idea what was going on.
