The next morning I had the pleasure of waking up to a loud string of barking noises; a reminder of what I had gotten myself into.
I glanced over at the clock, wincing when I saw that it was only 6:00am. I put my head under my pillow in a meek attempt to drown of the sound of the barking.
Next thing I knew, I was being jumped on by Duke and Lady; just another reminder of the long, endless days to come.
"Alright!" I said, pulling my head out from my pillow, "I'm up, I'm up!" Duke and Lady stopped barking and licked my face in a loving way. I rolled out of bed, my head heavy with lack of sleep. In truth, I did sleep a lot better than I normally did with Duke and Lady next to me. I slipped into a pair of jeans and the same loose, long sleeve shirt I wore yesterday; too tired and lazy to find another one. I threw my hair up in a pathetic ponytail and went downstairs to feed the dogs. They finally stopped whining after I had filled their bowls to the top with dog food; silencing the headache that was already starting to form. My phone rang, frightening the dogs as they attacked their food hungrily. I shuffled though my purse that I had left on the kitchen table in an anxious attempt to find the phone and shut the dogs up. "Hello?" I asked, breathless.
"Hello is this Miss Lucille Adams?" a mid-age woman asked from the other line. "This is her, what can I do for you?" I asked, leaning casually up against a kitchen chair. The sound of shuffling papers could be heard in the background.
"I've been informed that you have recently acquired a pair of Dobermans. I think it would be very wise for you to take them to a vet to get checked out, just to make sure that they are healthy," the woman said. If I had to guess, I'd say she was reading some paper word for word.
"Um," I said, glancing back at Duke and Lady, "when is the earliest I can come in?"
"The local veterinarian office opens at 7:00am, I could make you an appointment if you'd like."
"Would you please do that for me?"
"Of course, your appointment is at 7:15am."
"Thank you, goodbye," I said, hanging up. It still amazed me how quickly simple news like a new pet can travel in the small town of Barlow. "You two wanna go to the vet?" I said, looking at Duke and Lady. They both looked at me with their big, brown eyes, almost pleading me to not take them.
"Sorry, doesn't work this early in the morning," I said, smiling slightly at the two of them.
I pulled into the veterinarian's office parking lot, trying to ignore the loud whines coming from the backseat as Duke and Lady tried to find an escape without any luck. "Come on, it won't be that bad," I assured them, but I got the feeling they didn't believe me at all. I climbed out of the front seat and opened up the back door so they could get out. I clipped on each of their leashes and dragged them out forcefully, considering that they were clawing at the seat. Without warning, they both jumped out of the backseat, causing me to lose my balance and fall. I braced myself for the hard, wet ground only to be caught by a pair of strong arms. I glanced up, only to come face to face with Gerard. "Hi," I said, breaking the staring contest that was going on between us.
Gerard looked down at me with those mesmerizing eyes, never moving an inch from our original position. "Hi," he said, his mouth slowly forming into a boyish grin.
The sound of Duke and Lady barking brought me back to reality. "What are you doing here?" I asked, instantly regretting the way I worded that sentence.
"I should be asking you the same thing," he said, his grin turning into a smirk.
"I have a reason to be at the vet's, you do not have a pet, I do," I said, gesturing to the two dogs scratching at my leg eagerly.
Gerard brought me back up to a standing position, moving for the first time. He raised an eyebrow at me and at the dogs. "When did you get a dog?" he asked, his eyebrow were still raised.
"Yesterday. Long story," I said, grabbing the leashes again. "I see," Gerard said, his grin coming back. "You didn't answer my question," I pointed out, rolling my eyes.
He shrugged. "I was driving by when I saw your car. I thought I might come by and say hello."
"Well," I said, making eye contact with him, "hello."
"Mind if I come with you?" he asked, blocking my path. I sighed. "If you must."
We started to walk inside the office, where there was only one other person waiting for an appointment. "So what kind of dogs are they?" Gerard asked as soon as we signed in.
"Dobermans; the one over by the flower pot is Duke and the next to me is Lady," I said, pointing at each of the dogs.
"Miss Adams?" the receptiontist called, holding the door open. "Dr. Smith will see you now."
Duke and Lady were probably the worst animals this vet has ever dealt with. They ran around the office, knocking down countless trays of medical tools and scaring the nurse half to death. After the appointment, if you could even call that an appointment, we left quickly. Needless to say they told us that they should be fine and wouldn't need another check-up for quite some time.
"So," Gerard said as soon as we got to my car, "what are you doing today?"
"I don't know, why?" I asked, even though I had already guessed the answer. "Well, I was wondering if you'd like to come over. Mom has been dying to see you again," Gerard said, chuckling quietly.
"Sure," I said without thinking. "I'd love to."
