Chapter Thirty-nine: Night of Nothing:
-Anna-
I love nights like this. My husband has his arm across my chest. I just get lost in my thoughts. I used to be so lonely during my college years; I didn’t know how to open up to people. Ever since Papa died, I pretty much locked myself in a glass box and kept to my studies. I had friends, but none of them got close like my Asato-kun did. We are just as close as when we first met as we are now. It’s been a wild ride, but I love every second of it.
I glance over at the clock on the floor. It’ll be sunrise in a few hours. I turn my attention to Asato-kun. He looks like a sweet little child when he’s asleep like this. I lean down and give him a little kiss on his arm.
“I love you,” I whisper. I pause when I feel movement. Asato-kun looks up at me.
“I love you too.”
I look at him, caught off-guard. “How long have you been awake?”
“For a couple of minutes,” he says. “What’s on your mind?”
“Just my college years.”
“Happy memories?”
I shake my head. “Not really. I was lonely then.”
“I’m sorry to hear that.”
“No, it’s okay. I’m not so lonely anymore.” I pull his hand to my chest. “My friends and you helped me realize that.”
II: What If Game
I feel too old to play the “what if” game. However, I can’t help it. My life couldn’t gone in different directions. I look over at my husband.
“Do you play the ‘what if’ game with yourself?”
“What do you mean?”
“Well, it’s where you wonder what if your life had gone another way.”
He thinks about my question. “I probably have. Why do you ask?”
I shrug, shaking my head. “I was just wondering.”
“I don’t see a point in it.”
“What?”
“I mean… Why wonder what could’ve been? I mean, we’re both here, right?”
I smile to myself. “I guess you’re right.” I paused with another thought in mind. “You know something?”
He glances over at me. “What?”
“You sounded like me there for a minute.”
“Did I?”
“Yep. I think you’ve changed.”
He lifts his head, looking confused. “Have I?”
“Uh-hm.”
He smiles for a bit. “I guess I have.”
III: Forever
I feel so lucky. Most women throw away love on any man. Usually, it does not end well. Some men are cheats. Some can be abusive. Many others have factors that can wrong go. I’m happy Asato-kun is none of these. He is a good man. Asato-kun has his flaws. He may be a flake, a sweets monster, moody at times, and childish, but he’s still a good man. In a way, he’s like Papa.
I chuckle to myself. It must be true: You do end up marrying someone like your father. I frown to myself. But how long will this all last?
IV: Vow
I squeeze onto his arm as tightly as I can. Asato-kun glances over at me.
“Anna-chan?”
“Promise me something.”
“What’s the matter?”
“Please promise me something!”
“Okay…”
“Don’t ever leave me. Promise me that you will stay be my side forever.”
“Anna-chan…”
“Say it!”
My husband pulled me closer into his arms. “I promise.”
“Do you swear it?”
I press my lips together. I believe him, but my heart’s not sure. I need one more reassurance. “Kiss me.”
He looks uncertain at me. “Anna-chan…”
“Please!” I beg. “Do it for me!” Reluctantly, he kisses me on the lips. My fingers lace themselves within his dark hair. When he pulls away, my heart falls into ease. I draw in a breath.
“Thank you,” I murmur. “I needed that.”
V: Planning
“Summer will be over.”
“Yes.”
“How will we end it?”
He ponders this question as he props himself up in bed. “Have lots of sex.” I try not to laugh at him. He pouts at me so child-like. “What?”
“Is that all you think about?”
He kisses me on the forehead. “I blame you for that.”
“Me?”
“Oh yes!” He tries to kiss me again, but I push him off.
“Asato-kun! Not again! Wait until tomorrow night!”
My husband gives me a little pout. “You promise?”
I pat him on the head, smiling. “Yes, yes.” Asato-kun kisses me on the throat, making my toes curl. I hold him loosely in my arms. I love this man; I really do.
VI: Just Another Day
As the sun comes up, another day begins. Asato-kun kisses me goodbye.
“I’ll see you tonight,” he says.
“Have a good day,” I reply. My husband leaves for another day at work.
