And the Canary Will Sing

Preface

'If my father had a sister, or a brother, then maybe I wouldn't be in this hell-hole.'

James?" Carrie Potter sat on the counter, legs crossed, jaw set, and eyes staring intently at her brother. James looked up.

"What is it Canary?" Canary, Carrie's nick name since she was four. Their mother's friend had asked her was her name was. Carrie intended to say 'Carrie Nelly' but it came out as 'Canary.' Carrie was seldom called by her real name.

"Lily, why won't you go out with her?" James sighed and stood up. He ruffled Canary's hair and smiled.

"I have no idea, sis." He walked into the dining room and left canary to herself. She sighed. 'I wonder what would make Lily not like James?' She sighed and slipped off the counter.

"I shouldn't think to much of it. S'not like I need to worry." Canary nodded, and skipped out to the back yard, but found it was already occupied.

"W-who are you? What do you want? My brother is here, h-he'll curse you!" the figure turned around and Canary sighed.

"What's the big idea Canary?" Canary glared.

"Darn it Remus! Don't do that!" Canary put her hands on her hips and glared. But the glare didn't last for long. Remus Lupin rushed forward and pulled Canary into a crushing hug. He then picked her up and began twirling her 'round, and 'round. Making her squeal with joy.

"Re-e-mus! Put me down! Put me down!" Canary hit him on his shoulder and yelled some more causing Mr. Potter, Mrs. Potter, and James to rush out of the house, wands raised. Only to find Remus and Canary.

"Oi! Put my sister down!" With one final twirl Canary returned to her feet. She wobbled around for a moment, tripped over her feet, nearly crushed her face, but was saved by Remus' arm jetting out, locking around her waist, and pulling her securely to his side.

Canary and Remus looked at each other, blushed and stepped away from each other. James smiled, strode over to Remus and shook his hand.

"Have a good summer so far mate?" Remus nodded and smiled and smiled at the Potters.

Canary smiled, "you came just in time for my birthday-OW!!! JAMES!" James whacked Canary on the arm hissing something like; "Not polite!"

"Don't worry mate, this is why I came now." Canary smiled.

"I'm glad you're here Remmy!" she jumped onto Remus and hugged him tight. The small red head had so much strength.

"Air-issue!" Canary blushed and got down.

Days Later

"Sirius and Peter are coming tomorrow you know," she said looking at her shoes. Remus smiled kindly and offered his arm to her.

"Show me to the guest room, love?" he asked waggling an eyebrow, sending her into gales of laughter.

Days Later

Sirius pulled Canary aside and whispered close to her ear, "Canary, our mate Remus over there fancy's you. Be a Goddess and dance with my poor mate." Canary looked up and smile.

"You needn't ask me too," she said and started to walk to Remus. Mid-step she rushed back to Sirius and gave him a hug. Canary kissed him on the cheek, the turned to go to Remus, finding that he disappeared.

"James," said Canary, stopping her brother, "have you seen Remus?"

James thought a moment and said, "I think he went into the back, why?" But, Canary was already running to the back doors.

She found Remus sitting alone, with his back facing her.

"Remus?"

"Go away."

"Now, really Remus!" Remus turned around and glared.

"Why don't you go back to Sirius?" he said, voice filled with icy-cold venom.

"Oh," Canary began to giggle. "Oh Remus! Hah ha ha! Remus, love it's not what you think! Oh, oh Remus, love..." Remus looked at her.

"So, you mean...?" Canary nodded, laughing. Remus hit himself in the head.

"I'm sorry! I'm such a stupid, jealous, git!" Canary walked over to him and put his hand down. Her eyes shining with such power.

"Remus, don't...." Canary whispered. Remus took her hands and held them, sharing their warmth.

"Remus...." Remus leaned down and pressed his lips gently to hers. Canary's eye's widened. Remus. Remus was kissing her!

"Carrie Nelly Potter, I love you..." Something exploded within Canary. She felt power surging through every vein in her body. Everything was so clear. She didn't know how. Canary glowed as she looked up into Remus' eyes.

"And you, I love you Remus-" Suddenly, a crash! The joyful aura vanished, and so did Canary's lively glow. From the house shouts could be heard.

"Where's the girl?"

"GET THE HELL OUT OF OUR HOUSE!"

"STUBIFY!"

"EXPELL-"

"IMPERDMEA!"

"GET HER!"

Men rushed into the back. Black cloaks billowing, and mask covering all identity.

"Remus!" Canary exclaimed in a hushed whisper, "Death Eaters!"

"No time to worry! Get behind me!" Remus stood with his wand ready. "Stay away!" One man laughed and flung Remus to the side. Remus' head hit a rock with a crack! Knocking him out.

"REMUS!" Canary screamed, trying to run to the boy. "REMUS! NO! NOT REMUS!! JAMES! HELP!" James, Sirius, Peter, and the elder Potters rushed out to see a large man holding a kicking and screaming Canary.

"NO!" shouted James, he ran to Canary but was forced back by the other men. "CARIE! NOT MY SISTER! PUT HER THE HELL DOWN! LEAVE US THE BLODDY HELL ALONE!" But, the Death Eaters disappeared in a small POP! Leaving the Potters daughterless.

James fell to his knees. "No, not Carrie... not my little Canary..." tears unwillingly leaked from James' eyes.

From the other side of the yard little Peter squeaked out "We need to get Remus to a hospital! He's hurt!"

Far, Far, Away

"Come on man! We need to kill the girl!"

"I-I can't! She's just a girl!"

"Damnit!" The Death Eater covered his face. Willing himself not to scream.

"Why'd we bring her to America anyway?"

"So the Ministry doesn't find us!"

"Little, little wizzies! All busy! Trying to kill a nasty girl? She's so sweet looking too. Let me do it." Out of the shadows stepped a young woman, who had a slightly insane look about her. "Oh, Dearie! We should keep her! Like a good pet!"

A man with blond hair stepped out of the shadows and stood with the woman. "You hungry, luv?" The woman nodded and the man smirked. "Enjoy. Just don't get the girl, or mess up your new dress."

The woman's face turned to a demonic, hideous face.

"VAMPIRE!" yelled the Death Eaters with panic rising to the top of their voices. The woman pounced, finishing the two off with pride.

The man smiled and scoped up the girl. Canary. He looked down at her angelic face.

"We should keep this forever, Dru," the man said. The turned and walked away. To start a new family. A family that would not tarnish.

"And we will my Spike."
