And the Canary Will Sing
One:
One Spell, One Life
'If there was a spell, I'd use it. I'd use it for my parents.'
S he woke to a velvet bed. Her mind spun, where was she? What happened? She shook her head to clear her mind. Nothing was unfogging. Nothing was clear. She looked over and saw the dead body of another teenage girl. She screamed. She screamed and jumped from the bed. Who cared if her head was still foggy? Who cared if her movements split her head in two? Just to get away from the dead girl. If she could do nothing else...She collapsed to the floor, her head was sending splintering shocks to every limb of her body.
Voices. She heard voices. Scrambled voices. Screaming, crying. They filled her mind. Sending her into spasms of fear and pain.
"Make it stop!" she wailed covering her ears "please, some one! Make it stop!" Her eyesight blurred, every thing that was clear was fading... Fading...
"Poor, ducks. Spell had a nasty aftershock."
"She'll be normal soon? Drusilla will have a play mate soon?"
"Yes. And you'll get to name it whatever you want."
"The flowers want me to name her Charlotte!"
"Charlotte, eh?"
"Oh yes dearest Spike!" She opened her eyes slowly to find a man and a woman. The woman had long dark brown hair. The had piercing, dark eyes, with a slightly insane glint. She wore a long, blood red dress. Velvet.
The man was tall. His blond hair looked like it was belched blond, instead on natural. His eyes were an icy-cold blue. They sent shivers down her spine. The eyes reminded her of... Of who? Who'd it remind her of? He wore a black tee shirt and black leather pants. She sat up, and a black duster fell from her shoulders. The man and woman turned and looked at her. The woman gave her an insane grin, the man leered at her.
"Well, love, your pet is up." The woman crouched down to her. The woman patted her on the head.
"W-who are you people? Who a-am I? W-w-where am I?" she asked shrilly. The woman laughed.
"Dearie flower is Charlotte!" The woman stood and began to twirl. The man pulled her to her feet.
"In other words, luv, your name is Charlotte, and unlike those flowers your going to live forever." Her eyes glazed over as she stayed.
"C-Charlotte?"
"Yes, got a problem with that? Cos Dru can change that." He leered at her and she gulped.
"N-no. B-but if-if you d-d-don't mind m-me asking, wh-what's your n-name?" The man nodded and put his arm around her. Around Charlotte.
"I'm Ol' Spike. That Dark Goddess over there is Drusilla, Dru for short." Charlotte nodded. She looked at Dru spinning.
"Wh-what d-do you mean I'm going t-t-to li-live forever?" Spike laughed and pressed a soft kiss to her temple.
"Dru's little witchy playmate over there cast a... a 'Spell of Immortality.' So your all warm and lively, but you'll stay with Dru and I forever. 'Least 'til we're staked." Charlotte shivered. She was immortal.
"S-so y-you and Dru-Drusilla a-are the-the-"
"Undead? Yeah, guess we are." Drusilla came over and wrapped her arm around Charlotte's waist. She looked up into Spike's eyes and pouted.
"Spiky, my tummy's making all sorts of sounds!"
Spike smiled and looked down at Charlotte. "Looks like we're eating out, ducks."
"Yes Charlotte! Mummy will show you all sorts of fun!"
"Um, um, c-c-could you call m-me C-c-Charlie?"
"Why's that pet?"
"I-I d-don't know. I-t-it makes me f-feel warm." Spike nodded.
"Alright." Charlotte smiled and Dru pulled Charlotte closer to her. Dru placed a small kiss on Charlotte's cheek.
"Call me Mummy, okay Dearest Charlotte!" Charlotte smiled at the insane vampire.
"Alright Mummy."
"Good girl! Mummy and Spiky are your family! We're the only one's that care for our little Princess!"
"I believe you Mummy," said Charlie happily. Dru pulled Charlie to the door, letting out a gleeful laugh. Spike followed, locking the door.
"Alright my pets," he said, slinging an arm around Charlie's shoulder, "let's get Dru here something to eat, and you, Charlie, new clothes. I mean, what the hell is that?" Charlie looked down and blushed.
Hanging off her small frame was a long pink shirt she was using as a dress. It was faded and rag-like. She shrugged.
Spike laughed and looked around. "Now my sweet, what would you like to eat?" Dru grinned and pointed to a young girl. Charlie felt something surge within her.
"I'll bring the girl to you Mummy," she said looking up at Dru. Dru swayed, then grinned.
"Good girl. Bring the food to Mummy!" Charlie sauntered to the little girl.
"You know it's after dark," she muttered looking at the girl. The girl turned around with fear written all over her face.
"W-what do you w-w-want?"
"What's your name?"
"S-s-Sarah."
"Sarah, my Mummy would like to see you."
"I'm not supposed to talk to strangers!"
"My Mummy just wants you to wait with us. Your Mummy's coming to get you right?"
"Yes."
"Well come were it's safe," Charlie offered, holding out her hand. The little girl warily took it. Charlotte led her over to Dru, a spring in her step, and a glint in her eye.
"Hello little girl. My name is Dru. Do you know how tasty you look to the stars?" Tears flooded Sarah's eyes. She tugged at her arm, desperately trying to wench herself from Charlie's iron grip.
Charlie pulled Sarah in front of her, holding the wiggling and screaming girl by her shoulders. "Feel free to dig in Mummy," she said with a laugh in her throat.
Dru nodded and shifted to her game face. Sarah screamed bloody murder. She thrashed around trying to move, becoming more frantic as Dru grew nearer.
"LET ME-!" Dru sunk her teeth into Sarah's tender flesh. The little girl went ridged, her heart beat slowed, and she died.
It wasn't just she 'died'. Sarah felt her tiny life flash before her eye lids. She saw every detail in all of her memories.
She saw her brother, the one she loved and held to her heart. She saw all of it. She saw Dru's hair, and flesh. She saw Dru's fangs drawing blood from her young tender body.
Sarah felt the pain and love of her life. She felt her brother's touch, her brother's caring words as her read to her. She felt the pain of being ripped away from him and Mama. She felt all the mixed feelings she had for Lucius. Sarah felt the pain of Dru's fangs ripping her soul from her body. It hurt. It all hurt.
Sarah Snape died without hopes or dreams. Sarah Snape died from blood loss at the neck. She had slight bruises on her wrists, and upper arms. She was found on Oak Lane Avenue at a quarter past Three by Ms. O'Neil.
Sarah Snape died, being the last connection to Miss Carrie Potter's life. Miss Snape died, and with her, Carrie Potter.
