And the Canary Will Sing
Two:
Years Go By...
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Charlie dropped Sarah's body. She looked down and her eyes widened with shock. She had helped kill a girl. A living human. Charlie looked up and Drusilla squealed with delight.
"Princess Charlotte is learning!" Dru pulled Charlie into a tight hug, kissing her cheek. Charlotte blinked. She was being praised? Her family like this? Something dark stirred with in the teen. Something there might not be any hope for.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Charlotte walked the grave yard. Ever since Dru had gotten sick, and even better, Spike cut off their training. He had actually left her in Sunnyhell. She sniffled. The Slayer didn't know about Spike and Dru's little girl. Their little Princess. She punched a headstone. Most of the time had been uneventful. She really didn't miss Angelus. 'Sick bastard.'
"Little girls like to play in cemeteries?" Charlie turned. If the Slayer thought she was a Vampire... 'Shit! I don't think I can fight her! I've spared with Spike before, but he was going easy with me!' Charlie looked around and bolted. She had to run, or the slayer would get her. And, she hadn't sparred with anyone other than Spike, whom held himself back.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
"Duck! Duck Princess!" Charlie ducked as Spike swung. Finally. She had been hit, Goddess knows how many times. She kicked his legs out from under him. He hit the floor with a THUD!
Looking up he grinned, "you're getting good, luv." Charlie smiled. She pushed her still growing hair from her eyes. It was getting really long.
"Give me all you've got!" she cried. Spike shook his head.
"Sorry, I might kill my Dark Princess. We can't have that."
"No! I know what I can take! Please Spike! Please!" Spike looked at her, considering.
"I won't go all out," he said slowly, "but... I won't hold back as much." Charlie laughed giddily. She got to her ready position. She kept her eyes glued to Spike. Nothing spared a glance anymore.
Spike charged at her. Charlie's eyes widened and she stepped out of the way. She spun and swung. Her fist connected with Spike's face. Stunned, he stumbled, allowing Charlie to sock him again. Spike swung at her clumsily. Charlie ducked and moved behind him. Gaining easy access to the back of Spike's head. She hit him again.
Spike snapped. He spun and grabbed her wrist. His game face out and ready. Charlie gasped and began to try and pry her wrist from his iron grip.
"Spike!" she began to panic. "Spike! Let go! Let go!" Charlie met his yellow, demonic eyes. Spike was gone. His kindness was replaced with hunger.
"SPIKE!" Charlie wailed, "SPIKE LET GO!" A flash of light and Spike was a crossed the room. Tears filled Charlie's eyes as she ran to him. His eyes were closed, but there was no dust. He was alive. Well, the dead-alive.
One eye cracked open, "see, lovely?"
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Charlie closed the door to the crypt she had been living in. She sighed and allowed several tears to escape her eyelashes. Just like every day. But, this time she couldn't stop. Shakily she raised a hand to her face. Salty tears rolled down. Why couldn't she stop? Soon she was shaking, gut retching sobs escaping her small body.
"Spike," Charlie sobbed. She lowered herself to the floor. Tears falling in water falls.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Charlie sobbed in her room. She had no idea why she was crying. She missed something. Though, she had no idea.
"Ducks?" Charlie tried to gather herself. Willing the tears away made them come faster.
"S-s-s-s-Sp-Spi-hic! Spike?" Spike entered and his eyes softened at the sight of Charlie.
"Ducks, why are you crying?" he asked, stepping in. Charlie covered her face.
"D-d-don't l-look at me!" Spike strode over. He removed her hands. Looking into her green orbs, he smiled.
"Why wouldn't I? Your so beautiful." Charlie blushed, ducking her face. Spike grabbed her chin and made her look into his eyes again. Charlie squirmed.
Spike leaned forward and brushed his lips to hers.
"Spiky? Princess?" They jerked away from each other as Dru entered. She smiled her insane smile, walked to Spike, sat on his lap, and planted a kiss on both Spike's and Charlie's cheeks.
"My family..."
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Charlie sniffled and dried her eyes. "Vampires," she said softly to herself, "don't cry." She nodded. No, she wouldn't cry. Mortal's cry. Sighing, Charlie peered down at the body that still resembled a thirteen year old. Although her mind has been maturing, her body stayed the same...
"My little princess... you'll never change. You'll stay just right for mummy!" Drusilla's cheery voice rang in Charlie's head. Where had Dru and Spike gone? Had they left in such a hurry that they forgot about her? Charlie sighed. Maybe she could Mind-Link with Dru. She had to be well enough, considering the last words she said to her was her (Dru's) sanest.
"Spike and I will rein Hell on Earth Little Princess!" Charlie nodded and sat her self in the middle of the floor.
Dru... Mummy, it's Charlie!
Charlotte?
Yes Mummy.
You're not dead! Oh the flowers will sing!
You thought I was dead?
Spiky and I. We were sure the nasty Slayer killed our Darkest Flower Child. An under tone of bitterness entered Drusilla's voice.
I'm not dead. Mum, where's Spike?
Spike is returning to the Slayer's town. The moon is so mad. And the voice fear he's in love.
Love? Charlie's breath hitched. Spike in love with the Slayer? Tears stung her eyes. So, he's coming back to Sunnydale?
Yes.
Mummy- Charlie came back to her crypt. The door had been forced open and standing in the doorway was the Slayer.
"Slayer!" Charlie stood. Instinct took over. 'Damnit!'
"How typical. A crypt." Charlie held her ground. The slayer slowly advanced toward her.
"Protecto!" Charlie produced a shield. It wasn't very strong, and it wouldn't last. The shield wavered and vanished. Panicking, Charlie muttered the spell again. There was a shimmer, but nothing more. She backed up, the Slayer still walking near.
"Gee, what kind of vampire are you?"
"Stay away from her Slayer!" Charlie and the slayer looked to the door. There stood a very angry, very drunk, and very vamped out Spike.
"Who are you?" the slayer couldn't see his face. Long blond hair was falling into his eyes. Spike's clothing was ragged and dirty.
"Just get away from the damned girl!" he yelled, making the slayer jump.
"Go back to were you started, tonight slayer. Gon Bak," Charlie muttered the spell, and the slayer was gone. She then looked up to Spike.
"Could smell your fear, luv." For the second time, tears swelled behind Charlie's eyes. She ran to Spike, flinging her arms around his torso.
"Spike! Dru told me! I'm not dead! I'm not dead!" Spike, smelling tears, gently wrapped his arms around her fragile body, perfectly content with Charlie sharing her body heat with him.
"I'm glad you're not," he said softly, inhaling her sent. She smelled like apples. She tightened her grip around him. Biting back most of her tears. Spike was there, he was with her!
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Something there might not be any hope for. But, Charlie was terrified. A human girl lay at her feet, dead because of her. Even her hands, had there not been and blood on them, screamed to the world that she held the girl fast. Letting her fall victim to Dru's hunger. She stepped away from Sarah.
"Oh, oh no..." she covered her face with her blood stained hands. "Oh my goddess." She sank to her knees, weak from shock. Spike stooped, pulling her to his body. Behind her hands, Charlie's eye's widened. Although his body was cold, not even room tempter, she felt warm. Warm and safe. Dru stood over them, her head cocked to the side.
"Is-is my Princess sick?" 'No,' thought Charlie 'I'm not sick. Just...'
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Charlie smiles as that memory flashes by her eyes. The first time he was gentle with her. Spike pressed a soft kiss to her temple. She looked at him. Her green orbs wide with curiosity.
"W-why'd you come back Spike? I mean you an Mum..." Spike put a finger to her lips. Looking into her eyes he showed her that something had happened.
"Tomorrow we're going to the school library," said Spike, "most likely the Slayer's witch will be there..." Spike continued to explain. He told the plan like he used to tell the vampires that would do his dirty work for him. He said he'd walk her to the school, to the library. She'd distract the witch and anyone else, so that he could kidnap the witch, and none of them would know what hit them.
------------------------------------------------ --------------------------------------------------
Charlie stood in front of the library. No one was there. Charlie found the essence of the witch's aura. She followed it to a classroom. Peeking inside she say the red headed witch, with a puppy-like boy. The witch's hair was like Charlie's when she first came to Dru and Spike. When they entered the eighties, she was itching for a change, so they colored her hair. Well, her and Spike. They wouldn't let Dru help. Safety reasons.
Charlie opened the door slowly, and the two teens jumped. They looked at her in her thirteen-year-old' body. She smile sweetly.
"Hi there, um.. kid. No wait! How old are you? Well it really doesn't matter. Um, go home. Not to mean it in a nasty way. I mean why would I be mean to you? I don't know you. So, logically, I have no right to be all 'grr' even though you walked in on my and my... friend talking. But um..." the witch trailed off. And Charlie raised her eyebrow. She sighed and shook her head.
"You babble more than he said," she muttered. Looking at them she swung her arms. Wondering how she'd do this.
"Look, miss. I don't mean to be Captain Party Pooper, but what are you doing?" The puppy looked at her as if she was a child.
"Deciding what to do."
"Do wha-"
"Onay!" the boy ducked, pulling the witch with him.
"What the hell?!" Spike came in then, causing the witch to gasp.
"Good job pet," he said smiling at Charlie.
"You've got a kid on your side? You're sad Spike." Charlie and Spike both growled.
"Sod off!"
"I'm not a bloody kid!" Charlie stamped her foot and looked to Spike. "Bloody hell Spike. Why didn't you kill them when you had the chance? Goddess." Charlie shook her head. She walked over to the pair, then looked back at Spike.
"What?"
"Well, I wanna get Mum back. You want Dru back as well. Let's get the witch." Spike nodded, and advanced. But he was stopped by the puppy standing in front of the witch, and throwing a punch. Spike ducked, and knocked the boy in the back of the head, knocking him out. The witch screamed.
"Xander!" Spike grabbed the witch as if she was a rag doll. Charlie charmed the boy, Xander it was, to become lighter. Then she picked him up, and followed Spike, nabbing the magick supplies as she walked by.
The witch was extremely loud, and she protested all the way to were Spike and Charlie planed to keep them. They threw the boy and the witch first, the followed, hand in hand. The witch opened her mouth to speak. But Charlie held up her hand. Spike strolled over to the witch, smiling, he softly explained to the witch what she was to do.
"But," she protested, "what about the skanky, underage, vampy ho over there?" Spike reeled back and smacked her, sending the fragile girl flying.
"You will not speak to my sister like that!"
Don't even think about touching little bit you wanker.
Charlie stood still as Spike scolded the witch. He then almost immediately put her to work. Fearfully she looked up at him.
"I- I need..." Charlie dazed slightly. Only hearing the slight rumble between voices.
"Princess, I'm going out, to get the correct thing for the spell. Watch over the witch and her bloody friend." Spike turned on a heel, and wafted out the door. Charlie set a watchful eye on the witch.
"What's your name?" she inquired suddenly. The witch blinked and warily replied.
"W-Willow." Charlie nodded and stretched.
"Do you spar, Willow?" Charlie asked, attempting to smirk, but coming out with a gentle smile.
"N-no." Charlie sighed and plopped down on the bed.
"Making with the one word answers, huh Will?"
"D-don't call me that!" cried Willow suddenly. "Y-your n-not my friend. So don't talk to m-me like you are!" Willow was vibrating. But all Charlie did was laugh. The little witch has fire to her. She (Charlie) liked that.
"Now, all I'm doing is trying to make you feel at home-"
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
"Don't worry, you'll feel at home."
"Just trying to make you feel at home, Remmy."
"That's quite all right, Car."
"Do I feel at home? Why would you ask that James?"
"Although it isn't home, it's something. It's better then were I was living before."
"That's good, Siri. Stay as long as you like. Mum thinks your grand!"
"Just make yourself at home Peter. It's not like Death Eaters will came charging through that door!"
"If I would make myself at home, I might not leave."
"Make yourself at home, Remus. You know I won't care. Take a load off. Isn't it nearing the full moon?"
"Thank you. You're a Goddess Carrie."
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Charlotte wavered. She saw Willow's red hair, she saw the world she knew, and some she didn't. She looked into Spike's eyes, and saw what was to come.
But she never saw it coming.
'Could there be someone out there? Someone other than the Durslys? If so, where the hell are they?'
