Chapter 1: Meeting
Squall awoke to the sun rising over the horizon and his alarm clock going off. He groaned as he pressed the sleep button and looked at what time it was. 6am. The time to get up and dressed for the first day of school...and a whole new year of torture. Shane, a junior, had been teasing and physically harassing Squall since freshman year and Squall was sure Shane wouldn't stop this year. Shane was the reason Squall was silent during class and didn't talk to anyone or show any emotion.
Squall then got out of bed and walked to his closet. Squall thought about wearing something different, but as always he chose the usual. White T-shirt, leather pants, a bomber jacket, and leather boots. Squall looked in the mirror and cringed at what he saw. He had always been skinny and feminine, but the tight leather he always wore just accentuated it and made it stand out more.
That was one of the major reasons Shane picked on him. Squall knew he looked feminine, but he couldn't do anything about it. The phone rang and Squall answered it.
"Be there in a second, Zell," said Squall as he hung up without waiting for a reply. He and Zell, one of his two best friends, walked to school together everyday. Squall hurried downstairs, said a quick 'good-bye' to Laguna, and walked out the front door as he went to meet Zell at the corner of the street.
"Squall! Hurry up or we'll be late!" called Zell energetically from the curb as Squall walked slowly toward Zell and their school. It felt more like a prison then school to Squall. He hated having to go to class for no good reason.
"Hey did you hear about the new sophmore transferring here? He's supposed to be really tall and mean. Hopefully he's not in our homeroom and he won't pick on us," prayed Zell.
"Don't get your hopes up," said Squall in his usual depressed monotone. Zell sighed, but he knew Squall had a right to be depressed, considering what had happened to him last year. Who wouldn't be depressed and withdrawn after that? thought Zell as they reached the school entrance.
"Well the least I can do is hope and pray. It's worth a try ya know," said Zell as he and Squall walked through the school's front gates. Squall could hear and see everyone talking and laughing about their summers. And you could of course hear the cheerleaders cheering and the jocks laughing as they picked on the new freshman. Squall glanced at the jocks and saw Shane.
Before Shane could even notice he was there he quickly walked past everyone and went into the school with Zell right behind him. As Squall and Zell walked toward their lockers they looked at their schedules.
"This year is gonna suck," said Zell when he saw that they didn't have any classes or lunch together. As he got his books out Squall smirked. Every year sucked no matter what. Nothing interesting ever happened and no one stopped the harassment and teasing so basically every year was gonna suck. At least that's what Squall thought.
"When has school not sucked?" asked a familiar voice behind the two boys. Squall and Zell turned around to find their friend Rinoa. She was dressed in all black of course. She had black hair that was waist length and hazel eyes. She had also put on some make-up to accentuate the pretty features of her face and to bring out the color of her eyes. The same as last year. She may look ditzy, but she was far from it. She was as tough and smartass as any guy was.
"Got that right. It always does," said Zell replying to Rinoa's question. Rinoa was in the same homeroom as her two friends. She then checked their schedules and saw that she had no classes with Zell, but she had all the same classes and lunch as Squall.
"Alright. Looks like you'll have to put up with me every day this year," said Rinoa jokingly to Squall.
"Hmph. Let's just go to homeroom and get this day over with," said Squall as the three of them walked to homeroom and sat together. Squall sat in a seat and Zell and Rinoa sat on either side of him. Then the final bell rang and everyone sat in their seats. A female teacher walked in and took her place at the front of the classroom.
"Hello class. This year we have a new student with us. You may come in," said the teacher as the new student walked in. He was at least 6'0'', blonde hair, emerald eyes, very tan, and incredibly sexy. He wore denim jeans, sneakers, and a tight t-shirt that showed of his flat, muscled stomach.
"This is Seifer Almasy. He just moved her to Florida from California so make him feel welcome," said the teacher, "You may sit wherever you want."
With that Seifer walked toward the middle aisle and sat in the seat behind a brunette. Everyone still stared at him, but when he looked toward them they looked away blushing slightly. Seifer chuckled silently at their embarrassment. Seifer then turned his attention to the brunette in front of him. He had noticed that the brunette hadn't looked at him once or even acknowledged his presence.
This should be interesting, thought Seifer as he tried to think of ways to get the brunette to notice him. Well 1.) I could kiss him, 2.) I could talk to him, 3.) I could tease him, 4.)----Hey wait a second. I don't even know his name. I should probably know his name before I do anything. Okay how do I find out his name? thought Seifer as the teacher spoke up at the front of the classroom.
"I'll be sending around a seating chart. Please sign your name in the place where you sit," said the teacher as she handed it to one of the students. There's a way. A very easy and simple way, but I'll know his name nonetheless, thought Seifer as he slouched in his seat as the teacher talked about new school rules and regulations. Then Seifer noticed that the girl to the left of the brunette was looking at him. She had long, waist length black hair and hazel eyes.
She smiled sweetly at him and faced forward again. Seifer then noticed that the seating chart had reached the brunette in front of him. The brunette signed his name and then turned around to hand the chart to Seifer. As Seifer took the chart the brunette and he made eye contact. Storm grey/blue eyes met emerald green ones. The brunette smiled slightly as he faced forward with a slight blush.
He took notice of the blush as he signed his name and read the brunette's name. Squall Leonhart. Seifer then passed the chart to the girl who had smiled at him earlier. She took it from him as she looked at him and motioned for Seifer to talk to him and flirt. Seifer stared at her stunned as she signed her name. She then handed it to the person in front of her as she turned back to Seifer.
She relocated to the seat behind the one she had been while the teacher wasn't looking so she could talk to Seifer easier.
"The name's Rinoa," she whispered smiling.
"Seifer. Why were you motioning to Squall a moment ago?" whispered Seifer curious.
"You like him, right?" asked Rinoa looking at him smiling.
"Uh...um...I-I think. I mean I don't know," whispered Seifer not knowing if he could trust this Rinoa.
"Come on. You can tell me," said Rinoa encouragingly.
"Well...I think I like Squall, but I'm straight. But I guess I'm bi now since I like Squall because I still like girls, but I don't know if Squall likes guys too," whispered Seifer so only Rinoa could hear.
"Oh he does. He's bi too. I'm one of his friends. Talk to him. You're definitely his type," said Rinoa as she winked at him and returned steathly to her seat. Truthfully, Seifer was gay, not bi. He thought about talking to Squall, but dismissed it. Seifer had been more nervous then he had ever been in his life when Squall had just smiled and looked at him so how could he talk to him without stuttering or saying something stupid? Then the bell rang and everyone got up to go to their first class.
As Rinoa, Squall, and Zell reached the hall they parted.
"Take care of him Rin," said Zell as he waved to them.
"Of course I will," said Rinoa as she and Squall waved to Zell and went to their first class. As Rinoa and Squall reached their first class, Geometry, they sat down next to each other in the back. Then Rinoa saw Seifer walk in. Squall saw him too and his heartbeat increased. Squall had to admit that he had a slight crush on the new guy. He was incredibly handsome after all and let's just say that he could make anyone question their sexuality.
Rinoa got Seifer attention and pointed to the seat in front of her. Seifer walked toward her and sat in the seat she indicated just as a blond jock and some of his buddies sat on the other side of Squall.
"Shit. Seifer would you mind sitting in front of Squall?\" asked Rinoa hopefully.
"Sure. What's wrong?" asked Seifer worried.
"It's Shane," said Rinoa motioning to the blonde jock sitting next to Squall. Seifer could see Squall was nervous and was uncomfortable with Shane sitting next to him.
"He's been teasing and harassing Squall since last year. And this year is probably no different," said Rinoa with a disgusted expression on her face.
"I'll sit in front of Squall. No one messes with my guy," said Seifer winking at Rinoa. Rinoa smiled at him and he went to the seat in front of Squall and sat down. Seifer saw that Squall was shaking slightly and started to think that Shane had done something more then just mere teasing and harassment. Seifer put a hand on Squall shoulder as Squall looked up scared, but his fright went away when he saw that it wasn't Shane.
"Hi. I'm Seifer," he said extending a hand to Squall.
"Squall," he said shaking Seifer's hand.
"You okay? You were shaking a minute ago," said Seifer concerned.
"Yeah. I'm fine. Just cold," said Squall as Seifer nodded and accepted the answer even though he knew it was bull. Then Shane noticed Seifer and decided to pick on him instead of Squall...for now.
"Hey blondie. Never seen you here before. You new or something?" asked Shane. Seifer looked at him and smirked as Rinoa and Squall watched them.
"What's it to you?" asked Seifer rudely.
"Well I know everyone here, but I don't know you. What's your name?" asked Shane holding back his irritation at Seifer's comment.
"None of your damn business. Go bother someone else," said Seifer as everyone gasped and listened to their conversation.
"Why you little p*k. Who do you think you're talking to?" asked Shane angrily.
"Oh I don't know. A midget?" said Seifer as he smirked and Shane's face got red. Seifer and Shane were close to the same height, but Seifer knew he could probably beat Shane to a pulp. At Seifer's comment Squall looked at him and smiled. Seifer looked at him and winked at him suggestively. Squall blushed still smiling, but didn't look away as their eyes locked onto each others.
Then the teacher walked in as the bell rang so Seifer and Squall reluctantly broke eye contact and faced forward. Everyone else sat down as they still looked from Seifer to Shane. Then class started. Squall looked at Rinoa who was smiling at him. Rinoa winked as Squall and then she turned her attention to Seifer.
"Seifer. That wasn't very smart y'know," whispered Rinoa as she looked at her nails.
"He picked the fight. I just finished it," whispered Seifer as Rinoa moved to the seat in front of her to talk easier.
"Oh it's far from over. You better watch yourself during school. Hey...how about you hang out with us?" whispered Rinoa cheerfully. Squall looked at Rinoa and she smiled at him. She was trying to get Squall and Seifer together and that would only happen if they hung out together and Squall got to know Seifer better. Besides Rinoa liked Seifer as a friend. He was cool and seemed to know how to deal with Shane.
"What do you mean by 'us'?" asked Seifer.
"Oh. Squall, Zell, and me. Meet us after school at the front gates," whispered Rinoa as she filed her nails, not even paying attention to what the teacher was talking about.
"Sure," said Seifer as he glanced at Squall and saw Squall looking at him. Squall looked away with a slight blush. Seifer smiled and faced forward as a piece of paper landed on his desk. Rinoa then returned to her original seat. Seifer opened the note and smirked at it's contents. It read:
'If you ever cross my path or diss me again you're dead blondie.'
Seifer glanced at Shane who had a smug smile on his face. Seifer wiped that smile of his face as he gave him the bird.
"You a***e!" said Shane loudly as he stood up. Everyone looked at Shane like he was crazy.
"Mr. Connelly. What is the meaning of this?" asked the teacher a little shocked. Shane looked at Seifer who was looking at him expectantly and with amusement.
"It's nothing. Sorry Ms. White," said Shane as he sat down and everyone faced forward again. Rinoa got his attention as she winked at him and mouthed 'way to go.' Squall then got his attention who nodded to him smiling.
