Chapter 2
Class seemed to drag on forever until the bell finally rang at 10:05.
"Good going," said Rinoa as she and Squall walked with Seifer in the hall to their next class.
"Thanks. It happened all the time at my old school so I'm used to it," said Seifer as he reached his next class which, surprisingly, was also Squall and Rinoa's next class.
"No way! You must be kidding me. This must be fate," said Rinoa happily as she sat beside Squall and Seifer sat in front of Squall.
"Actually it's gonna be hell," said Squall as he motioned to the front of the classroom. Rinoa and Seifer looked at where Squall had indicated and saw Shane and his buddies.
"Oh great," said Rinoa under her breath as Shane sat in front of her.
"Hey babe," said Shane to Rinoa as he checked her out.
"Hi," said Rinoa faking politeness and a smile.
"You busy after school?" asked Shane smiling.
"Yeah I am. Sorry," said Rinoa faking a pout as Squall and Seifer watched Shane warily.
"Oh come on. Just hang out with my friends and me for awhile," said Shane insistently.
"Sorry. But I have to go shopping with my friends right after school and I cant's be late," said Rinoa letting her politeness and pout be replaced by irritation.
"Don't be so stubborn," said Shane as he grabbed her wrist. At this Rinoa stood up and wrenched her hand out of Shane's grip. Then Shane stood up.
"She said she's busy. Leave her alone," said Seifer dangerously.
"Make me blondie," said Shane tauntingly. At this Seifer stood up and delivered a punch to Shane's gut. Shane would've fallen down if one of his friends hadn't of caught him.
"Gladly," growled Seifer, "No one messes around with my friends." Then the bell rang and the teacher walked in. Everyone sat down as class started. Rinoa got Seifer attention and mouthed a 'thank you.' Seifer nodded and faced forward. Then Seifer smirked as he glanced at Shane whose face was scrunched up in pain. Shane looked at Seifer and glared.
"You don't know what kind of enemy you've made," hissed Shane as he faced forward again. Damn blonde guy. I'm safer goin' after Squall, thought Shane as class started. Shane glanced at Squall and saw him looking straight ahead. Shane smiled evilly.
"Hey Squall. How ya feeling today?" asked Shane. Squall ignored him and didn't say anything. Seifer glanced at Squall and saw fright in his eyes. Seifer watched warily as did Rinoa who was no paying attention to Squall and Shane.
"What's wrong? You feeling uncomfortable?" asked Shane as his friends laughed and Squall blushed, but didn't say anything.
"What? Do I make you uncomfortable?" asked Shane as his friends and him started laughing again.
"Shut up Shane," said Squall weakly knowing it wouldn't do any good.
"Yeah. Quit it or I'll ask Seifer to punch you again and this time I'll make sure you black out," hissed Rinoa as Shane and his friends faced forward still laughing. Seifer didn't know what was going on, but he guessed that Shane must've done something to Squall that he could use as blackmail if Squall tried to make Shane stop teasing him.
Seifer glanced behind him and saw that Squall had buried hid face in his arms on top of the desk. Seifer then looked at Rinoa worried. She looked concerned, but didn't say anything. Rinoa knew that even if she said something it wouldn't of helped.
"Squall what's wrong?" whispered Seifer, his voice filled with worry and concern.
"Nothing," replied Squall, his answer muffled by his arms and the desk.
"Squall you tell Rinoa and me anything," whispered Seifer really concerned. Squall lifted his head from his arms and gave Seifer a small smile.
"I know. I'm fine," said Squall as he faced forward again. Seifer and Rinoa did the same. Whenever Shane teased him Squall always remembered the physical harassment Shane had inflicted on him last year. It was torture and it was gonna happen again, he knew it. Unless someone stopped him. Then Rinoa turned toward Seifer.
"Hey Seifer. Could I see your class schedule?" asked Rinoa curiously. Seifer nodded as he pulled out his schedule and handed it to her. Rinoa looked at it and looked like she was about to burst with excitement.
"Ohmigod! Seifer you have all the same classes as Squall and me. And you have the same lunch. This is too perfect. Right Squall?" whispered Rinoa happily.
"Whatever," was Squall's reply. Rinoa sighed at Squall as she handed Seifer back his schedule. Well, well, well. Looks like things are getting interesting, thought Seifer as he faced forward and waited for the bell to ring.
Seifer, Squall, and Rinoa were glad when it was time for lunch, but when they walked into the cafeteria and saw Shane their happy mood dropped slightly. The three of them got some food and Rinoa showed Seifer the table they sat at.
"So what do you think of the school so far?" asked Rinoa somewhat sarcastically.
"It's interesting," said Seifer as Squall and him made eye contact. Squall broke it first as Rinoa resumed conversation.
"Interesting? How could this school be interesting?!" asked Rinoa looking from Seifer to Squall. She had seen their little eye contact thing and she smiled slightly.
"Interesting people. Like how you two talked to me right off the bat and how that Shane guy thinks he can pick on whoever he wants which is BS," said Seifer which made Squall blush and as Seifer looked over at Shane he glared at Seifer.
"Yeah. Well the jocks are on top of the school right next to the cheerleaders. They have power over all the students and even some of the teachers," said Rinoa as she shrugged her shoulders. Then when Rinoa went to go put her tray away Seifer turned his attention to Squall.
"Squall why do you let Shane walk all over you?" asked Seifer concern returning to his voice. Squall sighed because he knew he couldn't get out of answering the question.
"Because if I did something about it he'd just get me worse next time," said Squall making eye contact with Seifer.
"But...," said Seifer as he saw Rinoa coming back and decided to stop talking about it for now.
"Hey guys. The bells about to ring so you better take your trays up," said Rinoa as Squall and Seifer did just that and left the cafeteria with everyone else when the bell rang.
It felt like forever to Squall to get to the last class of the day. When he saw that his last class was Gym though he almost felt like passing out.
"R-Rin. I can't go to class. I just can't," said Squall as he went pale when they reached the entrance to the gym. Rinoa looked at him concerned and knowing why.
"It's okay Squall. Shane's not in our Gym class," said Rinoa soothingly as they went to the locker rooms. After Squall went into the boys locker room Seifer pulled Rinoa aside before she could go to the girl's locker room.
"You know what's wrong with Squall. Please tell me," said Seifer worried about Squall. Rinoa shook her head.
"I'm sorry, I can't yet. Maybe when we get to know you better," said Rinoa with a half-smile as they went to their separate locker rooms to get ready for gym.
After gym Seifer met Squall, Rinoa, and a blond-headed guy at the front gates.
"Hi. I'm Zell. What's your name?" asked the blonde energetically.
"I'm Seifer. I'm the new guy in your homeroom remember?" said Seifer chuckling as they shook hands. Remembrance lit up Zell's face.
"Oh yeah! You're the new guy everyone was talking about. But...you're really nice. Everyone said you were mean," said Zell hesitantly.
"Everyone says that because of how I look. They don't take the time to get to know me, they just assume," said Seifer darkly.
"Come on guys. Let's go," said Rinoa cheerily.
"Where are we going?" asked Seifer curiously.
"You'll see," said Squall. Rinoa winked at Squall as she led them to their destination. They stopped when the reached a small building called 'The Sassy Life.' Squall, Rinoa, and Zell walked in, but Seifer hesitated. He got a feeling that was telling him that something was gonna happen. Something good though, not bad.
Zell looked behind himself and saw that Seifer hadn't come in. Zell walked back to the entrance with a puzzled expression.
"You coming in?" asked Zell as he opened the door. Seifer nodded and followed Zell into the club. They walked up to where Squall and Rinoa were sitting and sat down next to them at the bar. The music was cranked up loud and most everyone was dancing. All four of them ordered alcoholic drinks and Seifer was surprised that the bartender didn't ask for their I.D.'s.
Rinoa giggled, from beside Seifer, at his surprise. Squall sat to the left of Seifer while Rinoa and Zell sat to Seifer's right. Seifer looked toward the dance floor and noticed something he hadn't before. Almost everyone had a least one article of clothing that was leather, tight fitting, or had netting on it.
"It's mostly the not-so-popular kids that come here to hang out after school," said Squall when he saw Seifer looking at everyone and their clothes. Squall smirked as he watched the people dancing really close together. He thought of how he'd like to dance that close with Seifer. Squall blushed when he thought of it. Damn. Why do I always think of him like that? He probably just wants to be friends, thought Squall as Seifer spoke.
"I didn't think any cheerleaders would be caught dead in here," said Seifer as he and Squall laughed a little. Rinoa and Zell smiled since they were glad that the two were getting along.
"You know...you'd think they would be most likely to hate each other. They're total opposites, but...they're already good friends, ya know?" said Rinoa to Zell. Zell nodded in response.
"It's almost like they were meant to be friends, right?" said Zell as he and Rinoa went to look in Squall and Seifer's direction, but there wasn't anyone there. Zell looked puzzled as Rinoa looked around the dance floor and saw them dancing. Rinoa's mouth fell open.
Squall...dancing?! There's no way! thought Rinoa as she tapped Zell on the shoulder and pointed toward the dance floor. Zell looked in the direction Rinoa indicated and he had the same reaction as her. Squall never danced. Well at least not in public.
Rinoa and Zell were still shocked when the song ended and Squall and Seifer walked back to them. Squall saw the look on their faces and smiled shyly as he blushed.
"S-Squall. You were dancing?" asked Rinoa trying to sound casual, but failing.
"Yeah. Seifer dragged me out there and wouldn't let me leave until the song was over," said Squall as he smiled.
"You dance pretty well, Squall. You should dance more often," said Seifer as he smiled and sat down next to Rinoa.
"Yeah. You looked good out there," said Zell smiling and giving Squall the thumbs up. Squall smiled and sat down next to Seifer. After a few more drinks Seifer actually got Squall to dance again. This time though Seifer and Squall danced together. Seifer had his arm around Squalls waist while Squall had his back to him and was in front of him. Squall put his arm around Seifer's neck to pull him closer as the danced together.
Rinoa and Zell smiled at this and decided to dance themselves. Then they left around 9:30 p.m. and walked home. Rinoa lived in the opposite direction of the guys so she waved good-bye as they parted. Then surprisingly Squall and Zell found out that Seifer lived in the same direction as them.
They reached Zell's house first and he waved to Squall and Seifer as they walked to Squall's house.
"Well here's my house. So I'll see you tomorrow?" asked Squall hopefully and smiling.
"Yeah. See ya tomorrow. Good-night," said Seifer who couldn't help smiling when Squall did.
"Good-night," said Squall as he grabbed Seifer's hand and squeezed it slightly and let go as he walked to his porch. Squall and Seifer waved good-bye as Seifer walked toward his house. When Seifer reached his house his mother and father were already asleep so he slipped in and crept to his room.
He closed his bedroom door silently and breathed a sigh of relief. Tomorrow. I'll ask Squall to go out with me tomorrow. He seems to like me back so why not ask him, thought Seifer as he flopped on his bed. He then drifted into sleep thinking about Squall and the future.
