Al had the spies' scuba equipment flown out as soon as he received the message. It arrived just after nightfall. The five agents were anxious to get the dive over with, so they could get back to their vacation. Down on the sandstone beach, the spies prepared to go out into the squid-infested water.
"So we all know the plan?" Delilah asked.
Ursula sighed. "Me and Emmet go in first, to see in the kraken-squid-thing is there. If it's all clear, we shoot one flare gun. If it's not, we shoot two and Nosey comes to help us. Then you two sneak into Dr Dismay's hideout while we keep the monster busy. We got it."
"Then go," Delilah growled.
Emmet and Ursula slipped quietly into the calm water. Delilah, Julius and Nosey stood in ankle-deep water, waiting. Minutes passed slowly, without any sign from the two swimmers.
"You don't think they'll go after Dr Dismay alone, do you?" Delilah asked quietly.
Before anyone could answer, a flare exploded out of the water. Relief flooded through the trio, but it was short-lived. A second flare broke the surface a few seconds later.
Nosey gulped. "Well, here I go. Good luck, guys,"
With that, he dashed into the ocean, his diving knife at the ready. Delilah looked over to Julius.
"Do you think they'll be OK?"
He nodded. "Nosey will probably stink the squid to death. Come on, let's go."
The pair had only walked a few paces before Delilah held her partner back. "Julius ..." she whispered, "be careful."
Julius grinned. "De, I'm always carefwaaah!"
Delilah rolled her eyes. Julius had slipped on some seaweed and fallen into the water.
"Oh, that's reassuring," she grumbled.
-----------------------------------------------------------------
Below the surface there was nothing but an eerie silence. And seaweed. Julius nearly spat out his regulator when a dark slimy piece hit his mask. He took a few deep breaths to calm himself; swimming in dark water with at least one giant monster squid as a resident didn't appeal to him.
Delilah nudged him with her shoulder as she typed something into her watch. Julius had to strain his eyes to read her message.
SHOULD WE CHANCE A FLASHLIGHT?
Julius shrugged. A few minutes later, he couldn't even see his hands as he swam through the cold water. Delilah turned on a small flashlight - just in time to see two tentacles come shooting towards them. A split-second warning was all the two spies needed. They quickly swam out of the tentacles' paths. Delilah shined the light in the direction of where they had come from. What she saw took her breath away.
Not 20 feet in front of them was the giant form of a squid. Its body was the size of two school buses with tentacles jetting out from its side. The bloodthirsty yellow eyes fixed on Delilah, and another limb shot towards her. She was too stunned to move.
Julius cannoned into her, knocking them both out of the way. The flashlight slipped from her grasp and sank into the darkness. The squid shot after it, thinking it was Delilah. As the monster moved, the lights of an underwater building came into view.
Dr Dismay's hideout.
The pair looked at each other briefly before making a beeline for it. There was no telling if or when the squid would return.
The swim seemed to take hours, even though it was only 10 minutes; the threat of the monstrous creature made time pass painfully slow. Finally, after what felt like years, there was a dull clank as Julius' head connected with the outside of the underwater base. He moved away, rubbing his head.
OW.
Delilah tried hard not to spit out her regulator as she giggled at Julius' message. She regained her composure as a terrifying scream tore through the water.
WE NEED TO GET INSIDE. she typed.
Julius nodded and they began feeling their way along the metal walls. Both spies nearly jumped out of their wet suits as the motion-sensitive door opened with a loud creak. But it was not heard, as another scream echoed through the silence, closer this time.
LADIES FIRST.
Rolling her eyes, Delilah swam past Julius, who was bowing. Even in the face of danger, he still managed to maintain his humor. Delilah found herself in a metal square, with lights streaming down from above. She surfaced in-between two submarines. Delilah pulled of her mask and spat out her regulator.
"I hope Ursula, Emmet and Nosey are OK. Julius, I ..." Delilah looked around the room, but her partner wasn't there.
She was just about to go under when something grabbed her leg.
We got it."
