Victoria Robinson(who preferred to be called Vic) woke that warm Monday morning in September and sighed as memories suddenly hit her. New state, new town, new school. These were the thoughts that ran through her mind like lightning, leaving frightening after images in their wake.

“Time for school,” she murmured, swinging her legs over the side of the bed.

As if the move from Florida to New Jersey wasn’t bad enough, Vic was starting public high school for the first time in her junior year. She’d signed up for some of the more advanced classes home schooling had prepped her for and it made her nervous. Different was never good in high school.

“You guys have any advice?” she asked the MCR poster on her wall, looking at Gerard in particular. “After all, you and Mikey went to school here.”

The prospect of moving to Belleville hadn’t sat well with her. None of the guys had said it was nice growing up here. But, when your father has a new editorial job in the city you sometimes have to go along for the ride.

“Nothing, huh? Guess I’ll have to figure it out on my own.”

The sixteen year old threw on a black collared shirt while swiftly knotting a black and white pin-stripe tie to go with it. Black skinny jeans, a studded belt and black Converses completed the outfit, with the black and white striped gloves added almost as an after thought.

Running a flatiron through her mid-shoulder length hair, she called herself presentable and headed downstairs.

“Victoria! All that black on your first day of school? Honey…” Beth shook her head at her oldest daughter.

“I just like black, Momma. That’s all. Do we have any coffee?” she asked, grabbing a pop tart to munch in the mean time.

“Yes, but not for you. You’re not supposed to drink coffee at your age.”

“Mom, you know they disproved that theory about coffee stunting your growth?” Vic teased, taking the orange juice Beth offered her. “With all the energy drinks out there it isn’t really an issue anymore.”

“Mm,” Beth made a noncommittal sound and turned towards the stove. “How many eggs do you want?”

“Oh, I don’t have time. I’ve gotta get to school early so I can figure things out. First day and all that.” Vic slung her messenger bag over her shoulder and made for the door.

“Are you off?” asked Daniel, her father, emerging from the basement.

“Yeah, I’m off, Dad. Bye Mom! Tell Jess I said bye, okay?”

Vic took a flying leap off the wide covered front porch and let the momentum from it set her pace down the block. She had to stop a few minutes later as her shoelace came undone and almost sent her sprawling.

The young brunette knelt down to tie her shoe and noticed the curtains twitch in the front window of the house across from her. A pleasant enough looking blond woman eyed her through the curtains before smiling and letting them drop back into place.

Vic shrugged, dusted her knees and picked up her pace once again. The rest of her journey was uneventful and she didn’t stop again until she reached the doors of Belleville High School.

According to Vic’s schedule her first class was literature with a Ms. Weems. She eased into the classroom and tried to pick a seat towards the back, dreading when the teacher would inevitably pull her in front of the class.

“Mm, it seems we have a new student with us today. Miss Victoria Robinson can you come up here please?” asked the teacher, after the bell rang to signal the start of class.

“Yes ma’am,” she replied, trying to ignore the giggles from the other students at her southern accent.

“Class, settle down,” said Ms. Weems, giving her pupils a stern glare. “Now, you’ve come all the way from Florida, is that right?”

Vic cleared her throat, trying to dislodge the lump that had formed there, “Yes ma’am.”

“Well, I’m sure you’ll settle in just fine after a few days.”

Vic nodded, unable to summon up any more courage to speak. It felt like all of the teens in the room had lasers for eyes and were training them all on her right at that moment.

After the ordeal was over she calmly and slowly made her way to her seat. A note landed on her desk when she was settled and she unfolded it in her lap. It read:

Look alive! We eat little southerners like you for breakfast.

The rest of the day passed in a bit of a blur and only became clear again when Vic left the school grounds that afternoon.
